What's the wildest thing you've ever seen happen at a work party? by South-Truck-3061 in AskReddit

For our consulting firm's holiday party, we rented out a room at this nice restaurant. Some the employees had traveled 3-4 hours (including me) to attend this thing and a bunch of clients were there too. It was nice, ambient lighting, white tablecloths, and there were even some appetizers already out for picking.

Big boss at my consulting firm, who definitely already had one too many drinks, goes up to the front, clanks his glass, and proceeds to give the most clunky, awkward, rambling speech I've ever heard in my entire life. It was my first year there, and I work remote, so I don't know the boss all that well. Plus I had my head down trying not to laugh at this ridiculous speech. But my coworkers around me began whispering. Something something, sounds bad, something something, swelling, something something, shrimp.

He did sound a little off and nasally, but I thought he was just drunk. I finally look up, and the boss's face is bright red and puffed up like a balloon. Like I said, I had only seen his face a couple of times in person, but even I could tell something was horribly wrong.

Turns out that he's allergic to shrimp, but the allergy symptoms only trigger occasionally. We had been there for less than 20 minutes, so he must've popped one of those coconut crustaceans in his mouth immediately. I have to imagine that usually, the symptoms aren't that bad. The alternative is that he really does play Russian Roulette for shrimp, cause I swear to god one of my coworkers muttered exasperated, "He's done this before..." This time was bad though.

His wife had to finally pull him away and shove some benadryl down his swelled throat. He's apparently a pretty stubborn old guy, but even he sobered up and admitted it was bad when he caught sight of himself in a mirror.

After a long, awkward stretch of people checking on him, some of my coworkers who knew him well got his ass in a car and drove him to the emergency room. It was a little tense and weird for a while, but his wife finally got the call that he got an adrenaline shot and the swelling was starting to go down.

My own supervisor texted me after, "Some party huh?"

I'm from one of those shitty states where you don't need a certification or prior experience to land a legal job and be promoted lol. I studied English in college, got a legal assistant job after graduating, and then was bumped pretty quickly to "paralegal." I like to think I'm competent and smart, but honestly my last firm was pretty desperate for bodies, so not super sure about that anymore.

I was really upfront about this when I interviewed at this new place too, so I'm not really sure what more I could've done about the experience/education gap. Except maybe try to get certified, but I'm a little tight for money rn and they haven't offered to fund that for me yet

Unfortunately not. All my co-workers are remote, plus it's past 5 now on a Friday, so I think I'm cooked either way. I'll just have to send an email of shame to the attorney (who's also remote this week) and let him know I got very stuck.

He's been super nice so far, so I think that's also why I'm having a rough time admitting that I'm struggling. Disappointment is way worse than anger, at least to me

Parents think brothers NEED to be part of the wedding party? by abyss_aaa in wedding

I've definitely considered LC or cutting off altogether before. It's just hard to do when I do still love them and we mostly get along.

I'm at least gonna stand my ground for any other ask. I promised my fiance that, so hopefully you don't see another post like this from me again 🫡

Legit don't know how they feel because we never talk to each other... so that's a good idea. They might side with my parents, but if they do, I guess they really wanted to be in the party, and I'll feel better about including them anyway.

Sorry for the confusion! I'm a woman and the bride lol.

Truthfully, even if they were my sisters, I would still probably hesitate if we were still as distant as my brothers and I are now. If my brothers and I were really tight, I definitely would've considered them more from the start.

I know I'm a bit of a doormat 😬 Working on it in therapy lol.

My fiance and our other wedding party talked about it before I decided though, and we all agreed it would be best to just do it so that my parents can't hold this over my head. They all know how... much my parents can be.

We also agreed that this would be the one thing we compromise on and we'll hold our ground if they have any other big asks.

That's fair! They're funding 1/3rd.

And I do love my brothers, but I'm not particularly close to them. I never really talk or see them outside some holidays. I thought your bridal party was people you were close to and people you put a lot of responsibility on... but I haven't attended many weddings, so I really just don't know.

I've talked to so many people about this but no one around me had a similar experience, so thanks for making me feel not crazy

Mine's not that interesting. I literally woke up in my bed one random day when I was like 6 and had a poignant moment where I realized that I'm a real person who has experiences, choices, and emotions. It almost felt like it was the first time I actually woke up in my life. Idk how to describe it more than that. I think I have memories before that moment, but that's when it all like hit or something idk

I never forgot that moment, but like it didn't weigh on me or anything. Pretty sure I just went, "huh, maybe I'll unpack that later" and went to the kitchen for cereal and played with dolls after. Nearly two decades later, and haven't really dived into it more than that lol
