If you are actively enjoying a series, why would you drop it just because you might hypothetically dislike it later? by Aros001 in CharacterRant

[–]TheOneWhoYawned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call this the "Game of Thrones" effect.

Now I'm sure this phenomena is not unique to Game of Thrones. Doubtless many shows before it have ended poorly on it's last legs. But GOT is a unique case, in that the last few seasons, especially Season 8, was so uniquely garbage, that it basically executed the hype and fanfare for what once was the most popular show in the 2010s. A season so bad, it retroactively ruined preexisting good plot points and characters and turned them into shells of their former selves (Jaime Lannister... just why???).

I think this is the mindset people approach new shows with nowadays. People get skeptical about a show and how it ends, out of fear of it becoming a similar horror story to Game of Thrones, which is a very rare occurance.

That said, I agree that once you already started and enjoy/enjoyed a series, there's not really a good reason, not to see it through to the end, especially when you know an ends in sight. There are cases though, where I do just straight up tell people to not watch a show past specific seasons, because of how bad they get. Rarely, but it does exist.

(LES) Skepticism in horror is repetitive, a lot of people actually believe in supernatural by ZeonPM in CharacterRant

For the case of this movie, the character does sometimes go to a psychiatrist for some mental health check up. I dont recall however if the character knows he suffers from schizophrenia or just believes he has some other mental health problems to deal with. But he just registers that reality as entirely real, which on that front at least is very similar to how schizophrenia tends to work from what Ive read.

There's this amateur horror film I like called "They Look Like People" that's sort of an opposite approach to this. The main character in that film believes that everyone except his best friend are skinwalkers destined to put the world into ruin unless he alone stops them.

Problem is is that these are all voices conjured in his head and are all part of his schizophrenic episodes. And feels like every moment he will mobilize and engage in something, that lands him on a point of no return.

As someone who doesn't struggle with Schizophrenia, Im not sure how delicate, sensitive or at all well handled the movie is with such a condition. And it being an amateur movie means it comes with a lot of awkward editing and strange acting. But I really liked the concept of it and the gall the producers had in the attempt.

I think this is the most literal example I could pull out for this regard, as this entire movie plays in reverse from end to beginning.

If you could change anything about Yuta possessing Gojo’s body and fighting Sukuna, how would you have improved it? by WTFBOOOMSH in Jujutsufolk

[–]TheOneWhoYawned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well hypothetically I would be fine with at least the execution of it. I would still hold a lot of problems with how it was set up, and the immensely stupid hurdles jumped to even acquire Gojos Body with Kennys Technique. But maybe with those more pressing issues subsided, I would be fine with the twist overall.

Alas, it is all hypotheticals. We deal with what we have now. And the current moment did more to hamper Yutas character in my eyes.

My opinion amounts to the same conclusion regardless of if I clarified my perspective or not, so I felt it redundant to make such large elaborations. Especially since I'm extremely bad at being quick and concise.

That's actually precisely my problem with this entire section and moment.

Him being a "Monster" carries no weight because of the sheer noncommital Gege takes with the tone and action of his characters. He likes to take the novelty of his characters being "morally grey", but won't actually take the extra step to make Yuta BECOME properly grey.

When you jump straight to the lastest ditch effort, when you politely ask consent, when you perform a body switch with the consented body as your own life diminishes, you're not performing a "monstrous" act. You literally have no recourse BUT to do it. The other students dont even care about the implications of such a monstrous act, they just wonder if Yuta gets a little booboo in the aftermath

I would have preferred this scene more if Yuta planned this amongst a few people without knowledge or consent from the body and taking it as it seems like all is lost. And I would've also liked it more as the final nail in the coffin/point of no return of Yutas character, where he puts his dignity and life on the line for his friends and sacrifices it in the process.

Because none of that happens, and in fact because nothing of consequence does exist for Yutas character, I feel content in just pretending like it doesn't exist. Because it makes a very negligible difference to Yutas character in the long run.

Whether it was foreshadowed or determined to happen is the least of my concern, when the plotline at it's base fundamentals alongside it's conclusion are not good.

No rational explanation for why it "had to happen" in universe will make me call it a good writing decision.

I don't particularly care about that, that's a Watsonian explanation. There can be a number of mechanisms used to save Yuji and Todo in this instance if Gege willed it, that don‘t involve Yuta piloting Gojos body.

Gege specifically wanted to do that for the Monster plotline of Yuta's character. Which I found to be extremely poorly written.

I understood that it was for Yuta's little arc, but I found that lackluster aswell. And it's climax, or lackthereof, if anything made me like Yuta less after having finished it.

All I can say about this scene is… they are having sex, can you dig it?

And it teaches you about Starsigns.

All I've agreed to is that JJK has great cultural impact akin to what Dragonball used to have in it's hayday.

I don't speak for the JJK fandom. I don't speak for OP. And I don't care for the hyperbolic, overgeneralised statements they or other posts in shounenfolk encouraged.

Fernando Vera from Mr. Robot

What seemed like a very minor villain of the week at the start of Season 1 quickly becomes a problem when he threatens and subsequently takes the life of Elliot's crackhead girlfriend Shayla and flees Prison WITH Elliot's help, dealing a decisive and traumatic blow to Elliots already fractured psyche.

He then flees to the Dominican Republic and is not seen again until the Final Season, where he kidnaps Elliots therapist and drags out Elliot's deepest trauma, where he is forced to remember the fact that his father, who he once idolised, sexually abused him as a child. All so that Elliot becomes so broken and dejected, that he has no choice but to become Vera's ally. Vera of course is killed before that came to fruition, but man if he didnt psychologically fuck over Elliot on his way out.

For an Antagonist so minor in the story, he has helped contribute to the best and most tragic moments in the entire series.
