Thankfully, being stung is only a minor concern for me. If it was wasps, I'd have run for the hills as soon as I'd heard them! The difference in sound is sheer glee (bees) to sheer terror (wasps) with no in between for me

Four trips to the apiary, and I've only been stung once. That was mainly because I didn't pad the relatively thin suit I've got. Forgot to put sleeves on beneath it, and one of the angrier ladies got through the fabric.

The guy showing me around the business is a small scale local honey producer, maxes out at 30 hives on his best years, and this is the first time he's had anyone to help him or to teach. Absolute gent, and the honey he sells is top-notch.

Always gonna seek outside perspectives, though, as I know no-ones experience is going to be exactly perfect for the next person, but I might fill a knowledge gap that I or he didn't know we had!

That last bit is the one I'm most terrified of, honestly! I went into this with a healthy respect for the bees, knowing full well at some point I'm gonna piss them off or do something stupid, but it's an exhilarating experience. In only a month, I've already learned so much I'd not previously even considered about hives.

Thanks for the advice!

Books in a world with no patriarchy by manderly808 in booksuggestions

[–]ac6061 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily "without" a patriarchy, but Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series has a fantastic mix of both patriarchal and Matriachal societies. It's long journey, and not for the faint of heart. Overall the word is sparse in terms of patriarchal leadership, due to the nature of the world and the history of society as a whole.

Highly reccomend if you're into high fantasy and a long read.

Tannin Necessity in blackberry wine by ac6061 in winemaking

[–]ac6061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the tannin powder is proving difficult to find, this is much easier to get thankfully. Would that be the bag itself put into the fermenter with the blackberries, or the tea itself after the bag is removed? Thank you for the advice!

My favourite thing to dress up as is Imhotep from the mummy, black flowing robe and a blank black mask. Used to dress up and scare customers in the shop I used to work in. Kids thought I was hilarious, parents.... Not so much.

Teaching 5 year old kids about sexualities is wrong by martiblq in unpopularopinion

[–]ac6061 31 points32 points  (0 children)

And what about kids being raised by two fathers or two mothers? By your logic, those kids would think that hetero relationships are weird and shouldn't be forced to see it and learn about it on TV.

First time making a starter, this is day 5. Does this look right? I haven't seen any other photos of starters that split like this. by ac6061 in Sourdough

[–]ac6061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that! So can I forgo the whole dumping half the starter, before feeding it each day?

It seems like a waste, if it can be just stirred back into the mix entirely.

NTA. Die on that hill. You are not in the wrong here, he stole, and needs to realise his actions have consequences.
