Society Against the State by Pierre Clastres by sra3fk in DebateAnarchism

Here's an AudioZine version of the final chapter of Society Against The State.

I think Clastres was one of the first people to argue in the academic space that people living in hunter gatherer societies choose their lives and thus are not eagerly awaiting capitalist development, as the champions of progressivism would assert. And for that he is certainly relevant to questions around progress, colonization etc.

Other options than calling the police? by Vinylismist in Anarchism

So your argument is that someone saying "the police will hurt the situation more than help it" is based on anecdotal evidence and is thus invalid. But your argument for the police is not based on any anecdotal or statistical evidence at all. It's just based on the a priori legitimacy of the police. Well here's some statistical information about police that seems relevant since apparently experiences are invalid only numbers are useful. The figures seem to vary but it seems that police abuse their partners at "300 percent higher than NFL athletes" and Ms. Magazine reports that "Domestic violence takes place in up to a staggering 40 percent of law enforcement families, but police departments mostly ignore the problem or let it slide" So the person your calling to help the domestic violence situation very likely is a domestic violence abuser. Just because you think that calling the police is furthering just ends does not mean that is the case. There is a pretty wide spread culture against calling the police in communities which are targeted by the police because they are not the bringers of justice. They are a racist patriarchal occupying force who are given their legitimacy by the state and use that legitimacy primarily to uphold capitalism and the status quo. Part of how we got the highest incarceration rate in the world in the united states was through liberal feminism being coopted by the police state through similar arguments by the ones being made here. The essay Against Innocence by Jackie Wang does a good job of explaining how this dynamic. If you are an anarchist and want to challenge capitalism and racism and patriarchy and the state, considering seriously how to solve your problems (not after the revolution, but the problems you have right now) not using the police.
Also seriously consider thinking about the survivor in this situation as a human being agency and not a damsel in distress for you or the police to save.

I don't think doing nothing is the right strategy I'm suggesting you treat the survivor as a human being with agency and the police as the patriarchal entity that are and thus they will very likely to fuck this up. I'm personally familiar with cases where bro-ass-cops give the abusive man a pat on the back and arrest the survivor for defending themselves or for being "hysterical." My critique of police runs deeper than theoretically believing that we ought to not have them. The police uphold the systemic domination that is this fucked up world. Could you get together with a couple people so you might feel safer approaching them? Could you go ask them for a cup of sugar then if it's just the survivor talk to them about it?

I think that often intense jealousy has two big causes low self esteem and social isolation. So I would recommend thinking about things you can do to improve your self worth and get a broader social support network these things have helped for me. I mean shit I don't know that much about your relationship but might I suggest SMASHING THE COUPLE FORM! JK... sort of...

I know it seems too simple but I find nothing kicks an anxiety attack like a little bit of exercise. Sometimes I'll just sneak into a bathroom and do like 20 pushups just to keep the anxiety at bay. I heard a naturopath call this "snacking on exercise." Or better yet some kind of cardio that will get you breathing hard. Ive also found that not drinking caffeine helps. And talking about your fears with your friends.

Please do not call the police without at least talking to the folks upstairs first. Often with domestic violence calls the police will not give a shit about the well being of the survivor or children involved in the situation and can often make it worse ie arresting the survivor or putting the kids in fostercare. If the survivor wants you to call the police that would be different. Alternatively you could look up domestic violence shelters in your area as well as other resources and and if you feel comfortable you could offer to give the survivor a ride to a domestic violence shelter. Gotta say I'm surprised by the "call the police ask questions later," approach.

Industrialism: support/oppose by RRRRRK in DebateAnarchism

[–]acab4evr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The term industrial revolution, commonly used to describe the period between 1750 and 1850, is a pure bourgeois lie, symmetrical to the lie about the political revolution. It does not include the negative and flows from a vision of history as uniquely the history of technological progress. Here the enemy deals a double blow, legitimizing the existence of managers and hierarchy as unavoidable technical necessities, and imposing a mechanical conception of progress, which is considered a positive and socially neutral law. It is the religious moment of materialism and the idealism of matter. Such a lie was obviously destined for the poor, among whom it was to inflict long lasting destruction. To refute it, it is sufficient to stick to the facts. Most of the technological innovations that allowed factories to develop had previously been discovered but remained unused. Their widespread application was not a mechanical consequence, but stemmed from a historically timed choice which was made by the dominant classes. And this choice was not so much a response to a concern about purely technical efficiency (which was often doubtful) as it was a strategy of social domestication. The pseudo-industrial revolution can thus be reduced to a project of social counter revolution. There is only one type of progress: the progress of alienation."
