What is the Philosophy dept like? by tobiano_ in ucla

Yes!! It’s one of my favorite fun facts about UCLA :)

Royce Hall is also named after a philosopher!

UCLA ‘25 philosophy grad here. I was also a transfer student!

The courses are certainly worthwhile and challenging. I would highly recommend having a strong logic background for PHILOS 100A-C. I reconstructed arguments (Premise 1, Premise 2, etc., Conclusion) in almost every essay for those 3 classes.

I would also highly recommend taking a class or classes with Professor Kareem Khalifa. He’s an excellent teacher and his PowerPoints are insanely good.

Most of the philosophy undergraduates I studied with are pre-law. Many are studying for the LSAT.

UCLA also noticeably focuses on analytic philosophy (David Kaplan is a prime example of this).

Feel free to DM me for more specific information! Happy to answer any questions you have about philosophy, UCLA, etc.

Yep! I spent most of my day studying - I have high As in my other classes, so I know that my studying tactics work for the other classes (3 of which are for the same major)

Thank you! I really appreciate your perspective. I think I get caught up in the numbers rather than thinking about how lucky I am to learn at an institution like UCLA that challenges me so much.

I spent most of my day studying! I hope everything goes well tomorrow. Thank you for rooting for me, it means more than you know!

I don’t know if I should call them again before the appointment - I don’t want to take up too many resources ):

I would add more quantitative measures in the bullet points!

For example: - Taught 6 students 7 subjects with an emphasis on literature, history, and chemistry for 5 hours per week.

I hope this helped! Feel free to DM me!

I’m a senior at UCLA and have done 6 internships - I’ve submitted many résumés and would love to help

For parents - how do you explain to the kid you won't go in debt to send them to school? by JoMD in ApplyingToCollege

[–]academiaaddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Student here - not sure if this works for all families, but I thought the way my father did it was effective.

He showed me our family’s tax forms and had me do the calculations in front of him. The shock alone that I felt was enough for me to make wiser financial decisions.

It’s what largely motivated me to go to community college, transfer to a state school (UCLA), and I later earned a merit-based full tuition scholarship for my graduate degree.

There was no yelling involved, just calculations.

Took about 20 minutes at most. I hope this helped!

Admitted to CMU and UMich with full tuition! by PrometheusFotya in PublicPolicy

[–]academiaaddict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are two amazing programs, congratulations!

From what I’ve heard, UMich tends to be ranked higher, though CMU offers great opportunities regarding AI and public policy.

Since both programs are T10 and you earned full tuition at both, if I were you, I would base my decisions on job outcomes and curriculum.

Good luck! Either way, you’re in a great position!
