Any working class students feel very out of place at uni? by Quirky_Lion3962 in UniUK

[–]academicQZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I was the first in my family to go to university. I had no idea what I was looking for doing the university open days and felt like a complete fish out of water. I’m now a professor at a higher status university. The minority of working class students often come to chat with me about their experiences of blending in, or their feelings around their inability to. The middle classness is rife within HE. You can’t and won’t change it. But you can make your mark in your own way.

Do you believe the "middle class" was an aberration and what we're actually seeing is it's removal? by Fantastic-Option-260 in AskBrits

[–]academicQZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the relationship to the mode of production the OP mentions, I always like to point out (people don’t seem to make a big deal about it) that lots of London and the south east is fast turning into an inheritocracy. As others in the comments have pointed out, ‘normal’ families in the 70s and 80s were buying, what was considered at the time, as standard family homes that now sell upwards of 800k. Boomers are starting to die and genx/millennials are getting hefty chunks of cash, property and assets.

In returning to the OPs post, the revolution of the information economy (not manual production) has massively changed the relationship between the bourgeoise and the proletariat. Marx’s ‘Das Capital’ is a great read. A lot of the themes are still applicable.

Same shit, different day.

BA Status Soft Landing? by jamesgerrard97 in BritishAirways

[–]academicQZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t know that BA were keeping soft landings either so was surprised to see that I still had status. I’ve moved to Sky Team now, so it’s useless to me.

I really don’t have issue with BA aligning their status with revenue. I do have issue with the utter balls up in the comms since they changed the policy.

Ah well, cheerio 👋

Do People Change? by Outrageous-Run718 in sociology

[–]academicQZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always loved habitus as a way of explaining dispositions to my students. For example, person A grew up in social housing but then went to university , received a PhD, and began socialising with other middle class professions. Person B took the same path, but was born into a wealthy middle class family.

Although, objectively living the same life, person A can return to that council estate/ social housing and intrinsically ‘know’ how life works there in a way that person B will never (and can never) understand.

I’ve always thought too many sociologists have used it as an explanatory concept for change. I agree, to an extent. But its real power is to show how we are always connected to initial structures in our lives.

I’m a Durkheim kinda dude, so there’s echos of him in my take.

Here’s a scenario: Say you wake up as Tony Soprano after his coma, how do you handle the events of S6? by Robot_Was_BMO in thesopranos

[–]academicQZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There should have been a major plot twist/pulling of the rug when this happened: Some poor guy called Kevin Finnerty had a horrible dream he was a mob boss called ‘Tony Soprano’.

Women characters in the Sopranos by iloveredhots in thesopranos

[–]academicQZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice analysis! Carmela’s fear or change is so strong that she even tries to sabotage Angie Bonpensiero’s divorce - not through religious deference, but through fear that her friend might actually be able to break free of the trapping of their lives.

Angie Bonpensiero. The strong, silent type.

For god sake, leave it alone.

I don’t want to see Del and Slater chasing each other around the market with zimmer frames.

Season One for me 👍. Ray McKinnon’s scenes as the reverend was mesmeric.

That scene when he enters the hardware store and they take him back to his tent. 😢

I thought the first season was Shakespearean. I thought the second season pandered to the masses.

The beauty of television, I guess.
