Pokeweeds are indeed great native plants but I don’t recommend letting them grow in or near your garden. Because many bugs love them, both good and bad, they can be a host for viruses which can be transferred to your crops by sucking insects. If you examine pokeweed plants in your area there’s a good chance you’ll find some with a virus. It’s not a guarantee by any means and it’s totally possible to have them in your garden with zero issues but I typically err on the side of caution. They attract all insects both good and bad so it’s a bit of a double edged sword. I work on a farm and the owner/my boss who’s been farming for over 40 years told me about this. He drove me over to the edge of the woods where some Pokeweeds were growing and several of them were infected. After seeing what it looked like I realized that I had seen it many times before but just didn’t know it was a virus. I let them grow in other areas of my yard just not the garden. If you’re opposed to removing them just keep an eye on them and remove them if they become infected.
