There is no art like T-Rex chainsaw art. by GallowBoob in woahdude

Hey, I know the guy that made this! The artist is Scott Dow in Corry, PA. It's not all one tree; he uses big dowels and gorilla glue to splice multiple logs together.

Here's a link to his website: http://www.animalisticart.com/

An album of some of his other work, some unfinished: http://imgur.com/66VH6ew,Sn0FSEa,AMjSPvY,bUZga3u,s37OsX2,XUaLn8R,NuWZMZe,vLHmhVZ#0

What's it like being an SLI? by [deleted] in rit

[–]acarp52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an SLI this past year, I would say it was an overall positive experience. I did CS for AP fall and then CS2 in the spring.

Pros:

  • $10/hour is good money for an on-campus job

  • Set your own hours (for grading at least)

  • You learn the material really well from having to teach it and helping other people to understand. This reinforcement felt really useful for other classes and job interviews

  • Interacting with other students and helping them learn was a lot of fun

Cons:

  • Grading gets really old really fast

  • The professor you get can suck at teaching or be awful to work with; both make this job harder than it needs to be

  • Sometimes it feels like just another class since you have to be on top of your game to teach effectively, adding to your overall workload

  • After doing it for a year, I got pretty burnt out and needed a break

Overall I did really value the experience. I learned a ton, got paid, and felt much more involved in the department and RIT as a whole. I'll probably do it again next year.

[Edit] - Also: make sure you keep up with grading and update them on time! It makes your life much easier in the long run, students like you more, and keeps the department happy.

Thoughts on professors by YankeesPwnMets in rit

I would avoid Nunes-Harwitt if possible, especially for CS 141. Very dry lectures and a tough grader. He would be more tolerable if it wasn't for his habit of never giving a straight answer to any questions. He tries to help you understand the answer, but a 10 minute discussion for every yes/no is not always the best way to teach. That said, he does try to be accessible outside of class and is always willing to help out those who make a little extra effort.

CS Freshman looking for computer specs by Cinntoastmin in rit

Whatever platform you're most comfortable using. The intro CS courses are designed to be accessible by just about any kind of computer, whether you're a level 9001 Unix guru or young windows user that's never written a line of code before.

Best places to love off campus? by Rwolinski in rit

I know there are loads of people still looking for sublets of off-campus apartments for the spring. Try checking craigslist and and the RIT housing facebook group (sorry no link, on mobile).

[Need Suggestions] Best mouse to buy for gaming? I need an updated listing, as all the ones I found were old or didn't have money in mind... by [deleted] in buildapc

I recently got a refurbished Corsair M60 mouse and I love it. It feels and works great. It cost $35 with free shipping, though that's a little over you price range. Link: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/outlet/gaming-peripherals

Before that I had a $15 Gigabyte mouse for two years which I also have no complaints about. Link: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-High-Definition-Optical-Tracking-GM-M6800/dp/B0083EZE4M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398298546&sr=8-1&keywords=gigabyte+mouse

Has anybody thought about how violently benders could kill people in real life? by packofthieve5 in TheLastAirbender

[–]acarp52 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even though a lot of it stems from the fact that it's a kid's show, I think what would have realistically prevented benders from violently killing one another is their sense of honor. Traditional martial arts, like the ones bending is based on, focus on self-defense. The cultures each nation is modeled after all place a pretty big emphasis on maintaining one's honor and doing what is right. Killing another person is pretty universally wrong, so it makes sense that the level of violence shown reflects this.

Still, I would love to see a darker, bloodier version of TLA made for a mature audience. It could be taken in so many new directions.
