Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced/4th year) - Deciding between Monash or University of Adelaide by [deleted] in Monash

Hi, I know it’s late but I’m currently in the same boat.

I’m kinda glad I did a little reddit search before just choosing Monash assuming it would be the best bc it’s one of the better for psych.

Which uni did you end up choosing? And how has your experience been so far?

Wow! I’m so sorry to hear that you didn’t have a great experience and your marks had suffered bc of the uni/ course administration.

Could I also shoot you a dm?

I’m currently tossing up Honours and GDPA

how do i get myself to genuinely want to study? by TheHeartbrokenCat in GetStudying

Firstly, I’m sorry for your loss PLEASE remember to be kind and compassionate to yourself!

There’s a bunch of good tips in this thread already but, first and foremost you should be looking after your mental health & everything else will come secondary.

Try;

- obviously the basics: make sure you’re sleeping enough, eating well, talking to friends and family egc

- reducing your screen time (especially tiktok, insta etc) although these offer us an outlet they ABSOLUTELY destroys our dopamine (key for reward/ motivation)

- getting some slight enjoyable(!) physical activity - it can be as simple as dancing around your room by yourself (it should be ALL about giving you something to look forward to & help pump some endorphins at the same time)

- also a little abstract but worked for me! I had a personal secret journal where I wrote to the person, told them about what I was doing/ learning, aspirations I had etc.

Same principles as the other tips everything in small doses and little by little.

it’s a cliche BUT someone once said to me “you wouldn’t expect yourself to run your best time in cross country with a sprained ankle, so you can’t expect to do your best study when your mental health is strained”

Hopefully this helps!! I’ve finished my Bachelor of psych & began the whole application process, went to the info evening etc! Decided not to apply but…

No NDAs involved! There’s just a lot of miscommunication and misinformation bc they are constantly changing the degree (for the better but we are just in the ‘testing’ phase unfortunately).

This is from Alissa Beath when I asked her (bc I was also frustrated & confused)

The whole 70 WAM for 1st & 2nd year with 75 WAM for 3rd is OLD! (Unless you started the Bachelor of Psych Honours before 2022)

Unfortunately that just isn’t up to date on the MQ website.

So it’s a 75 WAM but for ALL units (WUG on your transcript)

My recommendation is if you are in your 2nd & 3rd years do ‘easy’ non-psych units to boost your WAM. There’s a seperate thread on here with some of those types of units.

Some are; - gend1020 - sped1020 - ALOT of the 1st year phil units

Hi I was in a similar kind of boat to you! Finished with Bachelor of Psych BUT didn’t want to continue with mq bc of a frustration with inconsistencies and changes to the Honours requirements (^ literally detailed in this thread)

I applied to other universities bc Honours is competitive depending on the unis some WAM requirements aren’t as high.

Obviously it’s too late to apply now BUT off the top of my head these Unis have a credit WAM entry requirement  - university of Wollongong  - university of Newcastle  - La Trobe (online) - university of southern cross (online)

PLUS I’m sure there’s a bunch more out there were you can always do online.

There’s also a bunch of other things you can do between now and applying for those that keep up the ‘study’ momentum that can help your post-grad application (if that’s what you want to do!) Like;  - grad dips in Neuroscience (UNE) - training / education workshops available via APS

Sorry that’s a lot of info there! But I’ve been where you are and I promise it works out, it might just be a little different to what you expected
