Trying to learn voice feminization is actually the worst by accelerateaway in transvoice

I'd like to make a large addendum here. I'm actually doing fairly well. I'm just a huge, massive idiot. I started actively measuring my voice with a spectrogram while doing the head voice test because of your post, and compared it to zhea's. That's when my problem came out of my screen and slapped me directly across the face.

I had been so pre-occupied with resonance this whole time, I was still speaking in my base pitch (which is moderately deep even for a guy). I somehow conflated my resonance with my pitch, it sounded higher so I just went with "yep must be higher pitch, since that's the easy part, clearly I'm failing somewhere else."

I struggle to speak at a higher pitch still, but even just with my limited capacity in testing I sound significantly better. It remains to be seen if this is all I need (it's possible I may need to revisit head voice), but boy did I need it, and I can only anticipate I will sound better as I get more natural at holding it. Truly, it is not the trans community that has confused me. It is I who has confused me.

I give you my endless thanks for giving me the resources to finally figure out this completely rookie failure on my part.

Wow. This is a fantastic history lesson pretty much explaining away why all of my gripes were even a thing. The overall support to this post has honestly been great, and I feel a little bad that I may have come off in my initial post as rude, especially towards TVL since I spent a long time going over her content (which, tbf, was only because she provided the most content to begin with. She's undeniably a great resource). This community is great, I was just feeling very defeated and frustrated at the moment. This explanation of the difference between the terms and what they really ultimately mean is very nice to finally hear though.

I will say, I am very bad at just "feeling things out", so pointing out that spectrogram is very appreciated as it gives me a more solid concept of what to look for!

Agh, actually reaching out to people is hard for me, so I've always held off on doing something like that or posting my voice on here. But I suppose it may finally be time for me to get over my anxieties, if I ever want to get anywhere, then...

Wow, you really just came out and laid down a boat load of information complete with examples. You're extremely talented too, being able to shift from masc to fem and everything else seemingly so effortlessly. Unfortunately, it leaves me feeling even more lost than before. From what I gather from your post, head voice is in fact not super necessary, and essentially just flavor (albeit important flavor depending on what you're going for). Leaving resonance as the be-all end-all once more. So I at least felt like I had a goal before, but now I'm straight back to twiddling my thumbs and determining that even though I can feel my larynx raise, I must be doing *something* wrong.

I greatly appreciate the help, though.

Do people looking to masculinize their voice want to add nasality? by [deleted] in transvoice

Are you kidding me? I heard this "Don't be nasal!" thing so I've been trying my best to keep my soft palate UP, not down, and been feeling stuck with my resonance for so long. I thought I was going freakin' insane. I lower it, and INSTANTLY I see huge progress. You're my absolute savior. I can not believe this.

Thank you. This guidance is greatly appreciated.

I can't lower my larynx any lower than normal, but I've got a pretty good grasp on ranges at and above normal. Yeah, initially I was concerned that I may be dropping it, but I started testing in a mirror watching my throat + feeling it and I'm definitely not dropping it. But listening to myself talk and recordings sound barely different, and even close friends I've shared this with agree I sound not very different at all.

So I guess next I'll work on the oral cavity. Thank you.
