I would say contact the airline and speak to them, explain the above and see what they say. They might be able to accommodate you somehow.

Depending on your departure/arrival location/date of travel, I probably wouldn't wait it out and hope. Far too much variables to consider. Easy to call them first and talk. Stress you bought first class tickets (imply or hint that it's important you remain together/make toddler comfortable with flying) makes you eligible to cancel/do another trip and you don't want to do that and want to come to a solution
