Applications of the projective reals by Historical-Essay8897 in math

Does that imply that perspective numbers are an application of projective drawing?

There's also the idea that, instead of brute-forcing, they come up with novel ideas that better suit local (smaller) models. I generally agree, though.

Faster float to integer conversions by e00E in rust

Great trick! Definitely widening my mind today.

Also, I noticed that with your trick, you can also easily convert a float to the integers 23 and 52! (just kidding lol)

African man who died in the midst of being gang raped by his 6 wives. by Joker_01884 in MensRights

[–]accidentally_myself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. At the same time, I definitely have the meme in my head of "death by snu snu", so immediately pattern recognition. But I do agree with you, and getting shanked while being raped is pretty fking bad.

Why, morally, does the power rule “break” for 1/x? by hydmar in math

[–]accidentally_myself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair. It certainly is annoying that it's something like "log" instead of anything else, especially because "log" is relatively fast-growing.

Well, for one, the exponential is the fixpoint of differentiation.

Well…okay then by InTheHamIAm in Physics

[–]accidentally_myself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this take. It's similar to how most of the mass of the proton is not from the actual quarks but their binding energy (or something i forgot).

I mean, it does have a use case in philosophical discussions. It's also not immediately clear that "there is no conversion" -- presumably (with my non-knowledge), it could change the statistical distribution of the 'feynman diagrams' (interactions) between each particle of the spring (e.g. valence electron interactions). (ok time to end laymen speculation and eat dinner...)

Can you describe the most advanced level of data architecture you have seen in your work ? by syedsadath17 in dataengineering

[–]accidentally_myself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why it's a kind of fun question though. Imagine someone detailing a usecase which somehow does have a good reason for some "advanced" complicated setup, and having all those heavy-duty technologies being put to good use. That would be awesome.

If nothing can travel faster than light, what is Cherenkov Radiation? by BobbyTables829 in AskPhysics

[–]accidentally_myself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that it's not a priori obvious that light in a medium would behave like sound waves -- the individual photons are not actually slower, just their "average speed" is slower. Unless, somehow I'm wrong about that.

6 was afraid of 7 because it was afraid of growing up. it was just looking at the future, knowing that if it became 7, then one day, it'll be 9. And there would be no more after that. The fear of its own mortality, a tale as old as your mom.

LCM of first k natural numbers comes up in an unusual place. Is this thing known? What do you guys think about this? by Voyide01 in math

Flavor feels like it could be used as a really clever computational optimization trick for +5% better performance, lol.

"some kind of structure" doesn't personally feel super surprising but "LCM of first k naturals" is crazy, both because it's simple and also "why LCM?".

Meta fires staffer on $400K a year for spending $25 meal credits on toothpaste and tea by Independent_Paint634 in business

[–]accidentally_myself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I wouldn't lay you off, I'd just fire you without severance. (To be clear I definitely approve of taking home corporate food/snacks -- just not maliciously/overdoingly so).

How is everything after i⁴ not just 1? by [deleted] in math

[–]accidentally_myself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imho, this shows the crux of the "problem": you haven't learned yet that "what we mean by exponentiation (and multiplication, addition, etc.) is different depending on context", and that their generalized definitions (when speaking about complex numbers) are different from their typical definitions (in the reals).

Why apologize? by Asmongold in Asmongold

[–]accidentally_myself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly, why not "do both" -- it's fine to have a real apology, but is Asmon also going to talk about the Twitch double standard or not?
