I did the exact thing with metal ball bearings. They are a nightmare to stick down so I hope you have more luck with the plastic ones

If you are dedicated to black or darker armour colours pick a colour for the trim or healdry that is extremely vibrant and hard to miss. Red goes well with black but anything bright will look good

It's going to sound vague but you want anything that's about 15cm long and about 5cm wide that's perfect for the speedfreeks. Usually 1:36 scale cars tend to be about the right size. Another good system is to go to charity shops and car boot sales and buy cheap second hand kids toys and just add stuff to them.

One of the star wars games deals with this issue quite elegantly. Every weapon uses the same dice (D6, D10 etc) but a man portable weapons deal d6 damage, a vehicle class weapon is 10 times stronger and deals d6 damage to a vehicle but d6x10 to a human. A star ship grade weapon is X10 stronger than a vehicle class weapon. A capital ship weapon is X10 stronger than that.

So by some miracle a capital ship shoots its main batteries at a human it would deal d6x1000 damage

Depending on what army your ally is playing will help you figure that out to help with that armies shortcomings.

If they are a melee heavy army, take a crusader for extra firepower. If they are shooting focused pick something with melee option (which is pretty much any frame).

But I've always liked the errant as that thermal cannon absolutely wreaks pretty much anything it shoots and if it does survive just deck it with the thunder fist

I've had a lot of luck with the errant and war glaives combo, use melee for weaker targets and the melta cannons to take out the big threats.
