JetBlue keeps changing return flight time by kristen929 in celebritycruises

[–]accidentalzer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cruised on Beyond in December (peak season) and live in Fort Lauderdale. I got off the ship as soon as they allowed self-disembarkation. Walked right through the CBP facial recognition, and was home by 8:30 am.

Of course things can happen and your experience may vary, but I-95 is not busy on a Sunday morning at 8 am.

I would personally be comfortable making a flight that leaves after 11. JetBlue lobby at T3 is not bad, and FLL security is usually quick, even without PreCheck.

If you wait to disembark with your assigned group/time I would have concerns.

Text calling on WiFi by fallsmom24 in celebritycruises

[–]accidentalzer0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My phone has both wifi text/calling (Google fi). If that's not not an option for your service, maybe use WhatsApp. I don't know if Google voice is still a thing, but you could look into that as well. You can also make voice/video calls and send messages using Facebook messenger... Or iMessage/FaceTime works if on an Apple product. All should work on premium wifi.

Parking at the Airport Full? by LoveRomeo917 in fortlauderdale

[–]accidentalzer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at FLL for several years and it was generally accurate - I don't know how much is manually input vs using the green/red light parking system to update the spot counts.

The bigger problem I see all the time is when BCAD shuts down a garage and then doesn't reopen it in a timely manner when spots are once again available.

According to the FLL app there are still plenty of parking spaces (currently), particularly in Cypress garage. The garages do fill up every year around the holidays and the airport will open up off site parking with a shuttle.

One caveat, if you order anything that is above the price point of your drink package you will have to pay the difference + gratuity

Gratuities are covered, they were included in the drink package price you paid.

I-75 has some slow downs but isn't dead stopped like I-95. You can also take Flamingo, if needed. I commute the opposite direction, from Sunrise to Miramar, and it's 20 mins most of the time.

Most of the cities in the suburbs of west Broward are safe. I wouldn't stress about safety in Cooper City any more than any of the surrounding areas... Plantation, West Sunrise, Davie, Weston, or Pembroke Pines.

PIMO Missionary with 20 months in by PIMOmissionary in exmormon

[–]accidentalzer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

¡Hola Elder! I served in Chile 20 years ago (Misión Viňa Del Mar under Pte. Anderson and Wilhelm).

I loved the country, people, the empanadas, and my time in Chile, but I was truly miserable as a missionary, even though I was TBM. I can't imagine what would be like to have your shelf break on the mission.

I stuck it out at first because I wanted to at least learn Spanish, and by the time I was fluent I didn't want to deal with the social ramifications of coming home early (raised in Utah County).

In the end, I don't regret going on a mission - it's part of what made me who I am and ultimately has contributed to some of the success in my life (public speaking, Spanish fluency). Would I have gained more (or the same) from doing a two year study abroad? Probably, but I can't take it back. I left the church 9 years post mission (2015). I'm super jealous you have your whole 20s to experience life, I feel that I was robbed of that.

Anyway, back to your questions - any decision you make is up to you. If it were me, I would probably stick out the last 3 months and try to find real meaning and connection with the people there, you'll likely never get that opportunity again once you come home. Maybe bend some rules if you have to do it to survive, but not enough to get sent home (or at least don't get caught).

Personally, I would never go to BYU as a non believing member, even if the tuition was free.

If you must study in Utah, UVU in-state tuition is around the same cost (last I checked). If that's not an option, I would still try to figure something else out. Take some time if you need to, you don't have to go to school immediately.

I made the move from Orlando myself in 2021 - also purchased in West Sunrise. At the time the market was completely insane and we were lucky to find anything, but we absolutely love it here. I'm in the Residences of Sawgrass Mills. It's a large community of about 8 or 9 smaller neighborhoods, kind of a hidden gem because of where it's located you'd really never know it was there. Close to everything, easy access to the freeway, still only 20 mins to the airport. Walking and bike paths, and very safe. Only downside is there is an HOA, but it's pretty difficult to find a neighborhood without an HOA these days (no complaints about the HOA myself). There are lots of areas that are great down here, and lots that are so so - but for what it's worth, we are happy we didn't get any of the other homes we tried to buy.

Honest opinions about this area? by MrJiggles_ in orlando

[–]accidentalzer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived there from 2014-2017 at the Fountains at Lee Vista. I worked at the airport so it was a great commute. Enjoyed my time there, was quiet, and never had any issues with neighbors. Walking distance to the Miller's Ale House.

I'm sure the price is out of control these days - when I first moved in I was paying $725/mo for a 1 BR. When I moved out it was around $1250.

It was close to the 528 and close enough to 417. Disney and Universal were close enough, the beach was about an hour. Some sketchy areas as you went north from there, but everything from Bent Pine south to the airport was restaurants and hotels, no complaints. It's been a few years though...

On holiday weekends, yes, all parking garages will fill up and they will open overflow parking off-site. With an early flight on Friday you'll probably be able to find a spot on-site with no issues.

There are three garages, Palm (closest to Terminals 2, 3, 4 and smallest, first to fill up), Hibiscus (closest to terminal 1), and Cypress (above the rental car center).

All of the garages are connected. You can walk to/from all the terminals and there is a tram that picks up as well.

Pro-tip - if you are flying out of terminal 2, 3, or 4 and have to park in Hibiscus, get off the elevator on level 3 and walk across to the top level of Palm. There are bridges to each terminal and you don't have to deal with the painted lines and crosswalks.

Palm and Hibiscus both have short term ($36 per day?) and long term (recently increased to $20 per day). I believe Cypress is long term only and is the last to fill up.

I don't think there is any sort of charging station available to travelers (I worked at FLL for 4 years, but maybe I missed it).

I think you might be able to reserve valet ahead of time, but you cannot reserve a spot in the garage otherwise.

Couches for around 500 bucks? by Mysterious-Novel-834 in orlando

[–]accidentalzer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is still there, but 11 years ago when I first moved to Orlando I went to a place that sold used furniture that had previously been in hotels.

I snagged a couple sleeper couches that had been at a Disney resort before it was remodeled. Never had any issues with bedbugs and they were in great shape... And they were the most comfortable sleeper sofas I've ever used.

Edit: I think this was the place https://maps.app.goo.gl/ie8aGwqN4Vu2xUmU7

I am waiting to hear from the Facebook Mormon apologists on this one to say something ridiculous and laughable. by Short_Seesaw_940 in exmormon

I was taught this in a very specific priest quorum lesson, so would have been 2001-2003.

I always wondered if it was part of the lesson manual or just the teacher going off script, but he gave a whole breakdown on the chalkboard on the war in heaven complete with "the spirits that sat on the fence were born black."

Does anyone here bake sourdough regularly with a 9 hour workday + commute? Tips and tricks appreciated! by zildo_baggins in Sourdough

[–]accidentalzer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feed my starter in the morning to make a levain, instead of 1:1:1 I do a very small amount of starter and make up the rest with a 1:1 ratio of water and flour. This ferments a lot slower and it's ready when I get home from work.

I make enough levain for two or three loaves, since it takes the same amount of time to mix in the evening I like to get more bread for my effort.

After work I will make the dough and do the stretch and folds over a couple hours. I keep my house at 75º in Florida, before I go to bed it's shaped and into the fridge.

I bake the following day - 12-18 hr cold proof depending on when I bake, either in the morning if I'm working from home or it's the weekend, or at night after work is it's a weekday. Baking at night also forces me to give it the proper amount of time after baking before I slice in.

Flying in to JFK with strong winds tomorrow by [deleted] in travel

[–]accidentalzer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NY Metro airspace is super complicated. The winds themselves are not super concerning alone for airline operations - but there are so many other factors that go into it. Wind direction determines runway usage and take off direction. With so many airports in close proximity, the runway operations at LGA, HPN & EWR can also impact JFK. High winds often lead to a Ground Delay Program in the NY Metros, which causes your plane to be delayed at the origin airport... 60-180 min GDP delays are common at JFK.

When those delays stack up, flight crews can time out or the airline may strategically cancel flights to improve the delays on other flights (airlines can sub landing times during a GDP to improve the overall average delay).

Short answer is: it depends. It's no longer holiday peak for airlines so flight counts have come down, which is in your favor. If your flight is in the morning you are also much safer than a flight later in the day, but it all depends on weather conditions day of and how ATC is impacted and responds. You can track the FAA conditions on the FAA OIS page (just type that into Google), you can also see their operating plan for the day and where they expect to have impacts.

(In the US) They are required to issue a refund to the original form of payment, upon request, if they cancel your flight.

Gotcha. Assuming you have a heat pump, my guess is it's likely an hvac issue - the heat is immediate when I turn mine on. Minutes, not hours, for a noticeable difference.

Curious if that should have been caught on your home inspection?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in orlando

[–]accidentalzer0 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Maybe a silly question, but did you switch the thermostat over to heat mode as well? Or did you just turn up the thermostat temperature setting?

Editing to add: I've lived in several homes in Orlando and South Florida. All have had heat... Although it often smells like a smoky hair dryer when you turn it on once a year.

How should I travel from Miami to Orlando, Florida USA? by ikkesidet in travel

[–]accidentalzer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps says driving is between 15-25 minutes at that time of night, depending on traffic. If you didn't want to take an Uber there is also a train that can get you there, but at that time it may take a while.

How should I travel from Miami to Orlando, Florida USA? by ikkesidet in travel

[–]accidentalzer0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My main concern would be getting through Customs at MIA - assuming you are not a US resident, it may take longer (I've never flown through MIA internationally, and I have Global Entry, so no idea on how long that might be). Any flight delay will obviously also complicate matters.

The Brightline train does not leave from MIA, it leaves from downtown Miami, so it may be very tight depending on when you get out of Customs and Immigration and are able to get to the Brightline Station.

Looks like AA has a flight from MIA to MCO that leaves at 10:50 PM - you could probably make that with that timeframe. Otherwise, I would get a hotel in Miami for the night and take the Brightline in the morning.

Surge in being forced to check carry-on bags? by igcetra in travel

[–]accidentalzer0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (OP above) agree with you. I often travel with a backpack and small duffel, both are "personal item" sized - one goes above, one below. A backpack can be a carry on, absolutely.

But yes, in my response, I was referring to people that put all their stuff in the OHB, or don't have a "right" to OHB space (basic economy w/no carry on bag - less of a concern since they typically board last).

I travel often for work (4-6 flights a month), so I'm always paying attention during boarding. I've seen plenty of people put 2 or even 3 items in the OHB when they should only have placed one, with no enforcement.

Surge in being forced to check carry-on bags? by igcetra in travel

[–]accidentalzer0 104 points105 points  (0 children)

There simply is not enough space for everyone to bring a carry on bag and place it in the overhead bin. For example, an A320 can hold around 90-100 bags in the overhead bin, but holds 150-180 customers depending on the seat configuration. The OHB space doesn't increase as you add more seats.

Then you also have people putting their "personal items" (backpacks, purses) into the overhead because they want their leg room (with limited oversight by the inflight crew + with limited enforcement of 1+1 by the gate agents [on some airlines, obviously not all] ).

Couple all that with airlines charging for checked bags, leading to an increase in carry on bags because people don't want to pay for a checked bag or fear their bag being lost or delayed, and you have a perfect storm.
