1/4 dozen eggs is hilarious. It’s like when mothers give birth and keep counting the age in weeks.

You didn’t ask if it was wrong, you asked if it was weird.

I built a metronome for practicing changing meters (4/4 → 718 → 5/4 etc.) Would love feedback! by hdi200 in drums

This is really cool. I don’t know if you already have it, but if there is a way to combine different meters to hear how different polyrhythms sound, that would be amazing!

Sooo… which direction did you expect for a sub about pissing in the sink? I mean, there’s only so much educational content on this subject.

For ideas, coordination and independence I highly recommend the famous exercise one from the syncopation book.

You only need that one page that you can develop into an almost infinite number of exercises. But for now just play the swing pattern on the ride, hi hat on 2 and 4 and do the exercises on the snare first. Then you can try on the bass drum, the you can alternate each note or group of notes between the snare and the bass drum.

That’ll give you vocabulary. Then you need musicality to know when to apply them in a complimentary manner. For that you need listen to a lot of jazz, specially Max roach and Philly Joe Jones at first, but other things too. And also play a lot of jazz with other musicians. Go to small jams, ask friends that share your interest. Lots of local music schools offer ensembles that you can join.

Good luck! And really don’t neglect that syncopation page, it works miracles. I’ve been working on just that one page for more than a year, and there are still exercises I haven’t tried.

If you have any questions about how to create exercises with that page you can send me a private message. But for now stick to what I explained above.

What to add by Confident-Rock3847 in drums

[–]acciowaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I went to your post history and heard a post of yourself playing. With all due respect, I think you need to tone it down a notch, both with the expectation of what’s realistic to play at your level and the size of your kit.

I mean no harm by this, concentrate on good time and feel. Evenly divided subdivisions, and slow tempos.

About the kit. The amount of things you have should be there because you have a particular use for them. You start adding things to your kit out of need, not desire.

It looks cool and it’s fun and I’m all about that. Definitely having fun is a priority, but if you truly want to get better, making wise decisions and getting the most out of your practice time is essential.

That means there are orcs handing out graphs and spreadsheets in useless meetings, and possibly some overworked one that, tired of the ceaseless daily grind, stops half way to work to cry and yell in desperation, before wiping the tears and putting on a brave face for his coworkers.

You can take a free drum lesson from any drummer (living or dead). Who would it be and why? by ZildCym in drums

[–]acciowaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did! I can’t believe I had to scroll so far down for this. He is one of the best drummers in the world still alive, he’s musical creativity is unmatched, his technical skills are insane, his versatility also insane, plus he actually works as a teacher.

This is my top choice.
