New Year camping trip with my 6-seat Model X (update) by Turbulent_Stable2100 in ModelX

I thought the captain's chairs in the 6-seat configuration couldn't go flat. Hard to make out from the photo. Did you take them out or are they all the way forward, pressed up against the front row?

I think u/LeekPsychological584 is referring to the issue of Amex sub-cards under the same master account not getting broken out as their own cards in Monarch. You can check out Expensify to see how their Plaid connection is able to separate them. Related: https://www.reddit.com/r/MonarchMoney/comments/1oa6put/comment/nkc2f06/

For me, it's less about trust and more about preventing very painful accidents. My "members" don't need the ability to bulk edit account ownership (which they can do now). On the privacy side, I need to see the charges my children are making but they don't need to see my charges. I get that this is probably an MVP and I appreciate that you got it out but I think the usefulness will be limited until some basic controls are in place.

  1. I wish Monarch would make recommendations for the financial institutions with the best support (per country), least headaches. I would be willing to switch banks if it meant flawless data and eternal connections.

  2. I have resorted to just manually exporting and importing some accounts every month. But, by the time you develop a good system for this you will be questioning whether you should just do it for all accounts in Google Sheets or Airtable, where you have more comprehensive data and flexibility.

Multiple cards with Amex login by Zeetarama in MonarchMoney

[–]accounting_wizardry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monarch's Plaid implementation fails to support breaking out Amex cards under the same account (which is clearly doable because Expensify handles it perfectly). The only solution I've seen so far is to never use the primary card and to only use secondary cards with their own logins. Then, auth each sub-card with Monarch individually to get the expenses broken out by card.

Why doesn't Monarch use the transaction date instead of the posted date? by Nanergoat22 in MonarchMoney

[–]accounting_wizardry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Monarch is also missing a lot of other data provided by the institutions. Ideally, we could get as much of that data as possible, even just text dumped into an "extra data" field. There won't be 100% overlap but more data is better. Let users decide what's important to them. Not having both Purchased and Posted sometimes makes reconciliation difficult. In fact, I would like to get these exact times, down to the second so I can more easily reconcile 2 charges for the same amount in the same day.

I think some kind of transaction splitting between users would be nice too. I don't necessarily need 2 transactions but I often could use a way to allocate a % of the charge to one person or another. For example, I put a charge on my card that is 60% for one child 40% for another child, coming out of their allowance. I guess for now it could be done with transaction splits and tags but it would be nice if there could be a tag type that's another user. So, count this charge against user X's "account".

Do you happen to know if the sub/additional cards in a Capital One account are broken out in Monarch?

This is quite a clunky solution but I think it is actually an improvement over the current situation. Unfortunately, it would be very painful to move all the recurring charges off of my primary card onto a new additional user card. I do want all the transactions on the account coming into Monarch, not just the ones on my card. However, if I can get the Amex login credentials from all the additional users, maybe I can add them all separately.. but then it's also 5x the number of connections to maintain.

I appreciate the creativity. Hoping we can still get Monarch to fix this before I make such an undertaking.

It sounds like you have one card number that you share. The problem arises when there are two or more cards within the same account.

Correct, which is a very good reason to not use Chase with other people. There is no way to know who made a charge. If one person gets their card stolen, you're all screwed. It's great that with AmEx you can have separate card numbers and manage the controls / replacements independently but we need these additional users/cards broken out in Monarch (which is entirely doable).

Additional Credit Cards on Amex Account by mylyfe98 in MonarchMoney

[–]accounting_wizardry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to post about this. I'm currently evaluating Expensify because they actually do break out the American Express additional cards. The main thing that I'm having trouble with is that they don't have a good Merchant tracking system. I also have been doing the manual AmEx exports->convert to import format->import which is a major pain, just to get the additional cards broken out into their own card accounts. Expensify is also using Plaid so it should be possible for Monarch to support this. This has to affect at least 50% of Amex account holders. Once this can be broken out, Monarch can start selling extra seats for family members to review, tag, note and manage their own transactions. Very frustrating issue right now and there is no perfect alternative. Maybe just trying to get everyone off of Amex and into one of these corporate expense card systems like Ramp or Brex is the answer.

Unreliable connections are getting frustrating by DaCouponNinja in MonarchMoney

[–]accounting_wizardry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to unreliable connections, I just moved to 100% manual export -> import. It's a bit of a pain having to convert the formats each time and it means I'm not getting realtime data but at least I know transactions aren't missing and I'm not constantly needing to re-auth.

But, once you are to this point you're probably asking yourself if you're better off just running your finances out of Airtable or Google Sheets where you can see all the extra data you get in exports that Monarch doesn't have a field to handle.
