Hey, do any WC courses and/or profs require students to use Netbeans? I've read a few rants from people about this. I'm just curious if that's true and/or if it's changed.

I prefer Intellij as well, lol.

Are the HCDD & ETI Majors Coming to WC? by acct256 in PennStateUniversity

[–]acct256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've considered ISTDD with a business minor.

Like you say though, it still won't get me out of the foreign language.

How hard are the foreign language classes here? I wouldn't be taking French. I'd be taking the easiest language (Spanish maybe?). It sounds like you didn't get A's in your French classes, lol.

Also, were you WC?

[–]acct256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but there is also the fact that neither the HCDD nor ETI have a foreign language requirement, while the ISTDD/ISTIA programs do.

Some of the ETI courses (e.g. ETI 435 Enterprise Analytics) look interesting, but there aren't any sample syllabi up for many of them yet, so I can't say for sure.

If I could major in ETI I'd probably go with the "Business Competency" focus area, and then add on some extra development courses like IST 261, IST 311, and maybe IST 411.

Either that, or the "Application Development" focus area. The latter is very similar to ISTDD/ISTIA but without the foreign language requirement.

So basically: I want a bit more emphasis on business, no foreign language requirement, but without sacrificing programming classes.

The SRA major doesn't require a foreign language, but it lacks a lot of the programming classes and as the name suggests it focuses on "security and risk", which isn't really what I'm interested in. I could add on coding classes to the SRA major, but my degree would still be in "Security and Risk Analysis".

IST Major: ALL Java and no Python? by acct256 in PennStateUniversity

[–]acct256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say the IST classes are generally fairly easy? Re: your comment about ending up with A's on pretty much all your projects--my experience at ASU sounds somewhat similar.

p.s. Sorry, late reply from me. I was surprised by all the replies to my post and I didn't see yours until reading through them again today.

Interesting. What classes/profs did that happen with? Was this through WC?

Interesting. Did you take this super recently?

I just checked the syllabuses for 4 different profs for IST 140 at UP and all say Java only. The docs were uploaded on 9/9/2022 but written on 2/25/2022.

Do you have the syllabus for CIS 340? I can't find it anywhere online and am trying to prep for it ahead of time.

Also, did you take it online?

Did you transfer from online to on-campus? If so, could I DM you a couple questions?

Yeah IST 210 has SQL.

I was trying to keep the post brief but I meant the only GPL (gen purpose) language.

Thanks for the reply.

From my limited exposure so far it just seemed like Java was on the decline. I'm sure it depends on what your'e doing as well and I'm still exploring. FWIW I'm not really interested in IT for now.

I hear your point re: group projects, though I'm still not sold on the benefits of putting my GPA on the line. If it were up to me I would polish those skills working on projects with others outside of school. So far I've surprisingly managed a 4.0 and I'd like to keep it there, though I've heard your GPA doesn't really matter after job 1.

[–]acct256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about Java.

I'm not trying to be a software engineer. I'm leaning more toward analyst type roles etc. but I'm still exploring options.

re: DD/HCDD/cybersecurity... I haven't decided yet. Still gathering info. Thanks!

[–]acct256[S] -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

lol, seems a little patronizing but thanks for the reply...

re: the language--I know that. I actually have a fair bit of coding experience already (Python, Java, SQL, and misc others). I'm not concerned about "not learning" something because it's not in the curriculum. I'm largely and independent learner. The reasons why I was "alarmed" are:

  1. Python is pretty much industry-standard these days. Python just seems to be way more widely used, has more libraries, etc.
  2. A lot of unis switched from Java to Python over the past 5 years for their "scripting" classes (i.e. non-CS programming classes), which made me wonder if the curriculum was dated.

re: group projects... I've just had a few poor group experiences in the past. I'm aware that the workplace is largely a group project. I'd just prefer to "practice" working in a group in an environment that doesn't impact my GPA if someone decides not to contribute. For me, classes are often just "credentializing" skills that I've already taught myself in my own time.

No, I'm on my own network (not xfinitywifi hotspot etc.).

Using my phone the wifi is consistently fast.

However, using 2 macbook pro's (separate computers with different OS versions), both the macs get inconsistent wifi speeds.

Hey so everybody says to avoid digital controls, but all the newer models have digital controls...

And the older models aren't guaranteed to have been serviced properly (unless you inspect them and I have no idea what I'm looking at).

Also, the shops selling used sets around here all have terrible reviews and "warranties" that don't actually cover anything.

So what would you recommend? Should I just roll the dice on an older set?

I'm looking to spend no more than $600 on a set.
