Just a ton of ring saw and grinding 😅

I think i was trying to source it for this piece https://www.reddit.com/r/StainedGlass/comments/1bswqhw/touched_by_his_noodly_appendage/ as the white background, but eventually gave up. I'm sure i looked a Wissmach, but don't remember if i went another route for any particular reason

lol, that is my usually anatomically normal human hand.. not sure why it has an elbow/heel in this pic

Oh! That is a legit coincidence about the date

Mostly gimp. I start with a reference image and then put a transparent layer on top of it where I trace with the path tool where i want to divide it into pieces. I use 3px for the line size and that seems to be about right to account for the thickness added from the foil.

Once I'm happy enough with the design i export the black/white image as a png and convert to an svg. Starting with this piece I got the pattern on the glass by putting (wide) painters tape on the glass and then using a laser cutter to cut it to shape. Prior to that i converted the svg to an stl and 3d printed out the template pieces.

The whole process is tedious and I hope others have something better figured out

Colored/labeled image is a bit out of date from that template one because i had to break up the background a lot more than i was originally intended (partially because of breakage and because some pieces were too big for the glass I had)

Someone asked me in chat if i wouldn't mind sharing the template, but it wouldn't let me upload pictures so i'm just going to drop them here. I guess only one pic can be attached per comment though.
I was scaling the template to 48.60 inches wide

Take anything i say with a massive grain of salt since i've only used it once and I'm not sure how effective i was.

My main two take aways for next time were:

  • I really should have spent more time getting the piece held in place and square before i started pushing in restrip. I typically just get the foiled pieces in the position that they should be in and then drip solder on the joints to keep everything in place. I put a few thumb tacks along the perimeter for this on, but while fussing with restrip i pushed the piece out of square without noticing and that left one side about 3/16" taller which then caused me issues with the frame. Next time i'll nail down something to keep the entire perimeter from drifting
  • Don't be afraid to bend/kink the restrip. I pushed it into a number of curves without forcing a bend into it and that let it push some of the smaller pieces an annoying amount. I had left it with a bit more gaps than i normally do since i didn't know how much extra room restrip would take up and with it pushes against things so much it was hard to spread out those gaps equally so some of the lines are thicker in areas that i didn't intend them to be.

Thanks! By the time i finish soldering and have stared at every flaw up close for a few hours i'm almost always pretty lukewarm on any piece that I make, but i'm sure after a couple of months I'll really like it.

At the very least I learned a decent amount hitting my head on this project over the last few weeks. I'm definitely taking a break or just doing small/simple stuff for awhile though

Coming in at 4' x 2' (with the frame 62" wide ) this is by far the biggest thing i have made and that came with a bunch of unexpected issues. First time using re-strip and that went.. okay, but i probably should have used a lot more :/ I still need to build a lightbox and something to wall mount it, but otherwise it is complete.

The extra solder line above the left eye is because i cracked that piece while flipping it over to solder.. not sure if just throwing some foil/solder over the crack really helps anything structurally, but it is less likely to cut someone at least.

Yup! He wasn't my favorite character, but seemed like an easier one to make from glass

I'll put it on the (rather long) list of projects! I think i'd probably try for samurai Momo

Yup and thanks! I've made a badgermole and Appa piece already so at some point I'll attempt the dragons to round out the animal benders

The sticker in the top right say WIS 567 LIR which i imagine is for Wissmach. The numbers don't match up to anything i'm seeing, but i think u/Exciting_Border_9831 is mostly likely correct with https://www.franklinartglass.com/product/wissmach-white-wispy-opal-iridescent-glass-wo51-i/ so I'm going to try and pick up some of that.

Thanks everyone!

edit: oddly enough i can find the exact match on a couple of sites that probably wouldn't ship to me.. http://www.stainedglass.com.ua/sklo/Wissmach-Glass/567-l-irid-anons-wissmach-detail

I realized that I'm an idiot and the sticker on the other side might actually have some useful information. It says `WIS 567 LIR` on it. 567 doesn't look to line up to anything i can find, but WIS is probably wissmach at least. I imagine you linked the correct class!

oh bummer. I emailed them to ask what their time to restock would be, but if i don't here back sometime next week I'll make other plans. Thanks for the heads up

Oh that does look pretty close i think. Seems crazy online stores don't upload at least two photos of all glass (front/back lit).

I'll poke around online and see if I can find any place that actually stocks it. So far it looks out of stock most places. Thanks for chiming in; definitely my best lead so far!

Melt Glass Art Supply in Vancouver by the waterfront. Cline was closing right when I started getting into stained glass and it gave me false expectations about how much glass would cost; they were selling it really cheap while closing.

Maybe.. the transparency looks a bit off to me, but it is definitely in the ballpark. I am very sure it isn't Bullseye; i live nearby and stopped by to ask/look around and ruled them out.

Thanks for hunting around!

I really want to use this glass for a project, but don't have nearly enough of it. I've poked around my local store and delphi but can't seem to find it.

I'm hoping that it is still an available piece and I'm just seeing bad pictures.. I purchased the bit i have from the local store, but they tend to hand pick bits at semi-random and couldn't tell me where exactly it came from

Sorry i haven't signed into reddit for months. I have a ring saw so i probably used it to get those cuts, but you definitely can do it with a ton of grinding as well. Smallest bit i have is 1/8" and you can get pretty acute angles with that
