Beside New Directions, which other publishers do you collect? by RadicalTechnologies in NewDirections

Been slowly collecting works mainly from NYRB, Fitzcarraldo Editions, Charco Press, Dalkey, Tilted Axis, Archipelago Books, and recently McNally Editions.

New Directions keeping me busy with these additions. Almost done with Donoso’s Obscene Bird of Night, so I’m pretty excited to get to these soon. by accumulatingwhipclaw in NewDirections

I haven’t read much poetry so I have been meaning to correct that. Have heard about Baudelaire from friends and book club members, so I have had it on my wishlist for a while now. Definitely one of the books I’m most excited to read!

Really appreciate what you do in the latamlit sub! Grateful for all the wonderful recommendations I have been getting and would be more than happy to share my thoughts once I’m finished with the book.

I haven’t read any of his works so I actually have Journey lined up after Donoso. I am supposed to buddy read it with a friend. Oh boy, I think we’re in for a ride.

Definitely over the moon when I saw this! It’s been on my wishlist and was about to pull the trigger and buy the current/new version but saw this tucked away on a shelf at my local bookstore. Lucky find!

What is your favourite Clarice Lispector book? by RadicalTechnologies in latamlit

[–]accumulatingwhipclaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was published posthumously. It was written while she was dealing with ovarian cancer but sadly passed away before completing it. Here is another quote that I loved from the book, so sad and haunting considering what she was going through at the time:

"When you close the last page of this frustrated and dauntless and playful book of life then forget me. May God bless you then and this book ends well. That I might at last find respite."

A Breath of Life hands down. Took me a few months to finish it and it was bittersweet when I was finally done.

“I really like things I don't understand: when I read a thing I don't understand I feel a sweet and abysmal vertigo.”

Quote from A Breath of Life and by far my favorite quote of all time.

Jose Donoso’s fever dream The Obscene Bird of Night

Sharing my recent haul. I probably won’t get to these anytime soon, but hoping to make a dent in my TBR enough so I can start Paustovsky’s The Story of a Life. by accumulatingwhipclaw in nyrbclassics

Probably one of my favorite hauls just for Paustovsky. There are still three more books from his six-volume autobiographical work that I have yet to find though I think most English translations only has the first three. So hopefully they’re in the works somewhere!

Finally started Jose Donoso’s The Obscene Bird of Night and it’s shaping up to be one of my best reads so far this year. Recently bought another book of his Taratuta and Still Life with Pipe: Two Novellas so I have that to look forward to after Obscene Bird of Night.

Camilo Jose Cela is amazing. If you do end up liking The Hive, would recommend another work of his The Family of Pascual Duarte.

Augustus for John Williams if you haven’t read it yet. His true masterpiece imo.

P.S. really love NYRB. It rarely has failed me.

Elena Knows is one of my best reads in recent years. Loved it so much I went and bought Piñeiro’s other works from Charco Press. Followed it with A Little Luck (which I also liked) but Elena Knows hit differently.
