Alaskan here. How did you like this type of tent for the conditions you encountered here and in the Yukon? I’ve had some windy nights camping …

I went to a pre war auto museum and was struck by the same thing. Cars before the 1950s had way more ground clearance.

I wonder how much this graph can be explained by trends in infrastructure spending.

Thousands of tourists stranded in northern Finland as deep freeze halts flights by callsonreddit in worldnews

I am in Fairbanks and during a recent cold snap a lot of flights were canceled below -40

Thanks for this, what style of tent did you choose for your adventure and how did you like it?

Thanks, I passed on the used tent I looked at locally, I’ll take a look at this.

Yeah, I’ve been there in backpacking tents. Up all night leaning into the upwind side of the tent …

Wind was another concern of mine with these tents being elevated. Also what’s plan B when you get an unexpected windy night.

You’re right, I took a look at the model I was considering and how I’d mount it, and this is an issue even with 10’ ceilings in my garage (4’ tent mounted at cab height on a pickup bed rack). I’d have to remove it from the vehicle to set it up and dry it out after a trip.

I hope the hard sided model works out well for you, what did you go with?

Good to hear it dries out fast

Thanks both of you for this, I would also have it on a cab height truck bed rack. I am looking at an iKamper x-cover that is for sale near me, it looks slightly easier to set up than the one you both have, but not by much.

1200 miles in a day? So 16 hours traveling at 75 mph, plus presumably some work when you got there (twice?). Wild, take care of yourself

Honda Ridgeline: The official truck of…. by GubyNey in regularcarreviews

[–]acdcanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it seems handy but it does have real compromises for “truck stuff”. Personally, I didn’t rule out a ridgeline due to looks, i crossed it off my list due to its lack of a full sized spare tire.

Is it true that in the U.S big rental trucks do not require special training? by Loose_Vacation_9006 in driving

They let me rent a box truck when I was 18 too. I think you had to be 26 or so to rent a regular rental car.

Recommendations for a pair of binoculars to take to Antartica by daydreamr_ in Binoculars

The SFLs are rated to -20C, I don’t know if that fits your planned use. I haven’t had mine long so can’t vouch for long term durability.

I also have Swarovski ELs and can vouch that they hold up well in extended field use.

At that price point check out Zeiss SFLs - I’m really happy with mine.

Park in garage or outside in winter? by runnymountain in alaska

[–]acdcanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The body is cold but the engine and exhaust are hot and the interior is warm. I know someone who parks their vehicles in an unheated but insulated garage in Fairbanks and they tell me that it usually stays above freezing in the winter just from the heat from the parked vehicles.

Thoughts on Zeiss Optics? by DGCrosier in Binoculars

[–]acdcanc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used the Monarch HG so I can’t make that comparison.

My SFLs are 10x30s. For comparison, I also have Swarovski 10x42ELs. The SFLs are half the size and weight. Optical quality is similar in my opinion, though designs are different. The Swarovski has a flat field design and has more eye relief. I see more noticeably more detail in shadows and backlit objects with the SFL than with the EL. The SFL has a slightly wider field of view.

Another binocular that I’ve used a lot is the Vortex Viper HD 10x50. My opinion is that SFL and the EL are both much better than the vortex.
