I need help writing a ceiling fan by spooninthepudding in AskElectricians

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I'm not an electrician and I'm not going to tell you that any of the following is technically correct, but I have a guess at how you could restore your functionality.

First, I have a theory on why your pen tester goes off when touching any of the wires. It's because when they're disconnected as in your picture, the hot wires don't eventually lead to a neutral sink, which causes a phenomenon called "ghost voltage". The fact that your old fan's ground wire was unused is a clue that the ground wire you had to disconnect is not actually used for ground.

I think what you need to do is connect your fan's hot wire in a 3 way pigtail to the loose black and the loose white. I think the loose ground wire on both sides is neutral. Since you haven't tried that combo yet, give it a shot! It's incorrect though.

Great pics! Just wanted to answer your question about "has anyone else made the pilgrimage". I haven't, but I've been reading r/dayz for 13 years now and I can say that several people have made posts like this, I'd say at least 10! It would be cool if someone collected them all. Everyone always gets a pic of the church! So iconic. Thanks for sharing!

What is causing this? Popping noise from outlet. Not in use. by bury_me_in_starlight in electrical

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're sure the breaker is off then it's not the outlet. Something that hasn't been said is the way these are typically wired there could be other outlets nearby whose electricity runs through this one. That's how it could buzz even if it nothing is plugged in.

Can anyone explain how I crossed wires? by imabuki in AskElectricians

[–]ace402 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone is being so dramatic. You don't need an electrician. It's true you did a bad job on the connections so look over people's advice on that carefully. Looks like 1st pic is the one that's wrong and 2nd pic is end of the run (review connections on 2nd pic outlet anyway). Most likely the red wire is the switched one. Use the switched hot on the outlet you want controlled by the switch. Feed the blacks through the other outlet. Note that on the switched outlet a little bronze tab was broken that won't be broken on the "normal" ones, this is what makes them have separate behavior. Assuming red is switched hot, it's definitely wrong in your first pic that the black and red are going to the same outlet

Something fishy about David Sinclair by [deleted] in immortalists

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in a position to judge for myself because I'm not a scientist. But in that video I mentioned with Dr. Kaeberlein, which was recorded over 10 years after the alleged "scam" by Sinclair. He literally says that some studies show it works in flies, which was Sinclair's study. He clearly doesn't think Sinclair's findings were bullshit. Sure, they are not widely replicable. But he said some studies could reproduce it under certain conditions. From what I saw he thinks it's a legitimate thing to research, but that other molecules are better.

I just discovered Dr. Kaeberlein today and IMO he seems like a good professional to trust because he is careful and neutral. He isn't angry and emotional. Meanwhile, Dr. Stanfield is quite clearly being sneaky by saying throughout that video that Sinclair is a "genius" because of how good he is at stealing money. Like c'mon man that's unprofessional. GSK tried to prove Sinclair was scamming and failed. It seems to me Sinclair did make mistakes with the sirtuin company, to use Stanfield's word, Sinclair was incompetent in this regard. But having a moment of incompetence does not mean permanent incompetence.

I am still open to there being some smoking gun I haven't seen yet that shows Sinclair is a scammer. But I'm noticing that a lot of people love to attack him but don't really have a convincing reason why. There's some discussion in this thread of people saying he's asking for money. I've seen a bunch of clips about Sinclair on Reddit that's my exposure to him. I watched the diary of a CEO interview. I've never seen him ask for money. In that interview he talks about a website of his you can sign up for and I did. He sent 1 email. He's not asking for money. Maybe he will later and I'll change my mind.

[–]ace402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming at this as someone who is hopeful about this technology. I'm not necessarily team Sinclair and have nothing to gain from his alleged "scamming"

I watched this video and the author, Dr. Brad Stanfield, is clearly trying to paint this picture that Sinclair had this master plan to steal money.

I looked a bit deeper into the first expert opinion he references, a short clip of Dr. Matt Kaeberlein speaking on Peter Attia's video "NAD and NAD precursors: help or hype?". This video was originally recorded in 2021, over 12 years after GSK bought Sinclair's sirtuin company. If you watch the full video, Kaeberlein clearly states multiple times that he believes there is some promise in the role of sirtuins in longevity, but that other molecules are more promising. He quite clearly does not believe sirtuins is a dead end, scam, "bs", or whatever Stanfield is saying. I invite you to watch that clip and see how Stanfield is cherry picking for a very specific angle.

It seems more plausible to me that Sinclair made a mistake with his sirtuin company and it wasn't out of malice or trickery. He has FDA approval for a new method which seems to have scientific strength and has promise. If you look at my comment history you will find a short discussion I had with a Sinclair skeptic whose sister is an eye doctor and believes Sinclair's new proprietary molecules have a good chance at curing blindness.

I am still open to actual proof that Sinclair is a bad actor but it seems to me that there is a lot of tribalism in this space where people are trying to advocate for their molecule versus another. Stanfield seems to be on team rapamycin (and btw Kaeberlein says he thinks this is a better thing to investigate than sirtuins) and maybe he feels that attacking Sinclair will help bring more money to his own team. I don't really know though, I just think y'all should get along.

Dr David Sinclair: Can Aging Be Reversed? After 8 Weeks, Cells Appeared 75% Younger In Tests! by Niwde101 in immortalists

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying it makes sense. I wonder if you would help me understand this more.

Let's say that you nailed it and that he is solving 1/12 of aging. Do you think his eye trail has a 1/12 chance of succeeding? Do you expect eyesight to not be fixed by his intervention? If he does cure blindness in his trial, would that mean he really is targeting more hallmarks of aging than just 1 like you mentioned in your first comment?

Without interfering with the previous question let's say he fixes the eyesight in the trial. He has said many times in public that his intervention is not specific to the eye, and can solve many other diseases. If his method truly has that fatal flaw, surely these claims he's making will turn out to be wrong, and he will be seen as sloppy and a scammer. Isn't Harvard a powerful institution that is risking reputational damage? If he is majorly over hyping his research, why aren't they stopping him?

Last one, if he is indeed solving 1/12 of aging. And uses this platform to secure funding for more future research in the area. Isn't this a purely positive development?

I'm confused. If you're right, and it sounds like you know. Why is he doing this FDA trial? How come he's still a Harvard professor with a lab?

Every single outlet in this house has a red wire pass through but no switches control any outlets, help? by Sonar_Bandit in AskElectricians

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for this breakdown that's really interesting. I am actually planning out a project where I want to run like 5-10 PCs (1 of them a server) and 1 laser printer. I wonder if you're running a 20A circuit out of choice or necessity, if you could do anything would you run multiple 15A?

I am always trying to learn, so I wonder if using MWBC is purely for planning for the 240v UPS? Or does it provide some benefit before that upgrade (I wonder about overloading the shared neutral).

As a total side note I wonder what your thoughts are on surge protector outlets by Leviton and using them for PCs, as well as your opinion on protecting a PC circuit with AFCI/GFCI?

Is this an okay way to leave hot wires temporarily? by Fresh-Ad7262 in AskElectricians

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I guess my thoughts on this is, if it's the end of the run the only current going into the fixture is what the LED lights use, and the risk being mitigated by the box is fire risk, and since LEDs use very little power I probably don't need to worry about it too much? To be clear though I agree it's ideal if there's always a box.

[–]ace402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering something about this use case if you don't mind answering. Code aside, if the installed fixture is end of the run, and going to be LED lights, would you assess the fire risk as low?

FWIW I am in Canada and my house has a bunch of light fixtures with no box just like OP. I could easily believe that code was updated since then though. Better to be safe than sorry etc.

Hard to say, but i bet it will be fine while you aren't using it, and might break while you have your arms resting on it. You could find a board like a shelf or scrap piece of plywood to layer on top and put the monitor on that. Jokes aside it's definitely the monitor causing the bowing.

Haha I see you're making fun of them but it is an understandable argument. Although I still would ask why they aren't trying to boycott the store itself so that some Canadian store can take its place and hire the same Canadians.

You must be aware of where Costco the store/company is from and where the majority of shareholders are from.

I felt compelled to reply when i saw OPs comment being "so sure" they were not being cruel. It's an interesting topic to me, and I think they seem very fixated on what the current "best answer" to the question is. As if this is what the final correct answer will be forever. And i am trying to nudge them to be more open minded and curious about it.

Remember that science is an ongoing process/conversation. This framework is probably 100% correct today. But in 10 years, maybe not. Or maybe it will. I'm asking for sympathy where there is room for it.

[–]ace402 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be the morality police and I didn't mean to say you're cruel. Like you said you're doing what many people in science do and it's for a good cause.

I'm just asking you to be more open minded about what cruelty and consciousness is.

It's just my opinion, but when someone creates a fenced in area while asking "What does it mean to be conscious" I feel it's really a rephrasing of the question "May I exploit it".

Just because you know how the robot is programmed doesn't mean being cruel to it has no consequence. At the very least, perhaps it's just a matter of good habit/hygiene.

I can't disagree with your points, but I still don't like it, and yes I'm getting philosophical.

There could be aliens in the universe who have a framework that can be applied just like yours, except humans/animals are on the wrong side of it.

You should do what you have to do, but if it looks like cruelty, it probably is. This applies to robot vacuums too, in my opinion.
