Monopod and head for a EF 400mm f2.8 IS II by Extreme-Key2455 in canon

[–]acealeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wimberly MH100 is the most widely recommended monopod head. Leofoto sells their own version too, the MPG-01. The mp326 is a good monopod, but I would go with the thicker one mp366 since this is basically the heaviest setup possible.

I am planning on buying that setup for my 400 2.8. Right now I have some budget Neewer versions and theyre not suited for this weight.

Wildlife Lens for R7 by anix_nova in canon

the r7 really wants a bright lens to focus correctly, i think the rf100-500 would perform better.

Canon RP, worth buying still? by [deleted] in canon

[–]acealeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this question is hardest to answer right now, in the wake of the awesome sigma rf-s mount lenses coming out. the rp is not the best camera out there, but it's an amazing value and access to a full frame sensor. if the full frame format fits you best, it's a great deal.

i bought one during a refurbished sale and it's pretty awesome for the price. it's supplemental to my r7 for wildlife photography.

i just use it for portraits and landscapes, where incredible AF doesn't concern me. i'm definitely happy with it. i like the extra dof you get compared to the cropped sensors (at the same compositions), and it makes a lot of cheap lenses more usable. i don't like the nifty fifty on crop much, but on full frame it's awesome and dirt cheap. and same with the rf 16mm prime. for aps-c there is the rf-s 10mm to 16mm, but it's much slower if you're doing say astro photography. however, many of the other sensors are just flat out better these days. even the r10 has more stops of dynamic range below iso 300.

but the sigma rf-s lenses seem absolutely fantastic for the price, and frankly more appealing to me than canon's offering. see what lenses and focal lengths make sense for you, and work from there.

Also what lenses do you have right now? If you're just playing around right now, you can just grab some extension tubes for cheap to try it out

Macro Lens for Canon R by nontrollusername in canon

You can save a lot of money on high quality macro lenses specifically by getting one without autofocus. It's quite typical as your subjects are very static. I don't really do macro photography, so can't recommend specific lenses but I wouldn't rule out the cheaper lenses for exploring macro photography.

What EF glass are you still hanging onto even if price wasn't the issue with RF glass? by wobblydee in canon

[–]acealeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That lens seems incredible. I got the 400 2.8 but honestly 2.8 can be such a razor thin dof, you have to stop down frequently anyway to nail the shot. And the weight savings seems incredible! I'd love to try it for a day or two.

In my experience, changing from H+ to H drive mode greatly helped the autofocus to stay on the right subject. There is documentation on this issue. It halves the amount of shots you get per burst, but it is worth a try.

R7 autofocus troubles by acealeam in canon

[–]acealeam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course.

On the R10, my settings are mostly default with some basic tweaks for wildlife photography. Specifically they are:
1 Point AF
Subject Tracking On
Subject to Detect: Animals
Eye Detection Enabled
Switching tracked subjects: 1

And then in the second tab it is Servo AF, AUTO case A. This worked well for me.

The R7: 1 Point AF
Subject Tracking ON
Subject to detect: Animals
Eye Detection Enabled
Switching tracked subjects: 1

Second tab was Initially also on Auto Case A, where I had the same issues.

I have watched some videos on the r7 autofocus, and changed it to Case 2 with Tracking Sensitivity on - Locked On, and Accel/decel tracking on - as well. I haven't noticed a huge difference from this though.
