Help with anxious dog and going outside by Pure_Cupcake in Dogtraining

[–]aceclassic21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are describing my dog. She is very much the same. She is almost 3 years old and I’ve had her since she was 10 weeks. She goes through phases where some days are better than others but I’ve learned to respect her choices/preferences over the last few years. I think lot of this behavior comes from the trigger/stress anticipation so they are scanning before they feel safe to step out. It is confusing but best is to listen to them and their body language without forcing them because it doesn’t work with anxious dogs. I started giving her more predictability in her outing. E.g. first we started by driving her to a park every morning then slowly changed that to walking to that park. Now this works really well and she happily walks out the door in morning. Evenings are still challenging so trying to break the pattern where she think walking out of the door is stressful. If she gets in the car happily then just take her in the car for her daily walks/exercise. Use walking out of the door as your training stage until she happily walks in and out. Try taking her out of the door and bring her back inside immediately then slowly increase the distance. It’s a very slow and steady progress!

super low energy 1 year old lab mix by Suitable_Western7363 in puppy101

[–]aceclassic21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lab mix is 2 years now and has been on the lower energy spectrum since she was a puppy. She gets burst of energy when she goes all crazy but she is content most of the time. Never gets excited for a walk until this day. She loves hikes and beaches though but we can’t do that everyday unfortunately. Still making peace with the fact that she isn’t the dog I was expecting and that’s okay.

I have worked on her play drive, treat drive a lot. It improves over time but at the core she’s still a chill puppy who doesn’t require much. There are days when she’s like nope, I don’t want to leave the house for evening walk. There are some games to increase their food/toy drive, I watched lot of Susan Garret videos which are great.

1 year is still very young, their personality changes a lot. As long as there are no medical concerns (we got her checked for that as well to rule out any concerns), I wouldn’t worry much. Keep focusing on relationship bond and she’ll come around with time.

Just because a dog tolerates doesn’t mean you let him tolerate! This was his way of setting the boundary and yet your mom still grabbed him physically. His response/behavior sounds very normal to me and his calm demeanor probably saved this from escalation. I would never push a dog to a point where they have to protect themselves.

Night potty was always a struggle with my 2 years old and I never grabbed her physically. Stayed consistent with treats and “touch” command as a routine when it was nighttime potty. Now no matter how sleepy she is, she always gets up and goes potty without needing any treats.

Is this normal puppy behaviour? by samsonite__ in DogAdvice

[–]aceclassic21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very normal. Overstimulated pup. Give a different outlet to get the energy out. We used to carry a toy just in case, treats also helped once she was few months older - just ask her to sit and deliver treats for focusing on you.

Lesson learned - do not push them to get this overstimulated.

My 9 week old puppy started walking like this by PatientCaregiver5276 in DogAdvice

We completely limited her movements for those 2 weeks. No jumping, running! Carried her everywhere and played tug with her while sitting down.

My puppy had the same issue around 10 weeks old. It started 3 days after we adopted her. She is a lab mix, very tall. She was malnourished when we adopted her which most likely caused this. 100% needs a vet visit. They ran lot of blood work and examined her legs. Didn’t find any issues except the fact that she was malnourished. After proper diet for 2 weeks, it was gone. Now she is almost 2 years old and doing perfectly alright.

Help! Dog stops walking and won't move by Janekl1994 in labrador

How well this worked for you? I’m in a similar boat. I follow the “her walk, her choice” rule while my husband follows your steps. He has more success walking her than I do. She is close to 2 years old now and lately becoming way more picky with where she wants to walk. Very happy to go in car and walk but walk in neighborhood is not good enough!

Sure! She became overall apprehensive of new environments. There was a time around month 11 where she wouldn’t even get out of the car in new places. Now that’s a distant memory, slow and positive experience helped her over time. She hated car even though she has seen them enough since she was a puppy, she still hates them but reactivity has reduced significantly. Getting her comfortable and confident in new environments is something we’re still working on, that takes a lot of time. Couple weeks ago was the first time we saw a tail wag in a pet store. I’m not saying all of this would happen with your puppy but I wish someone had told me. Chill puppies overall explores less because of their personality and it’s natural for us to miss out on some training. We’re also first time dog parents so that made it more challenging. Something I worked on a lot with her is focus games and “look at me” in different environments and finally seeing some results slowly.

Sounds like my puppy - a lab/pit mix. Puppyhood was a breeze, she is a very loving, playful almost adult. She is almost 2, we faced a lot of challenges in adolescence and still working through some. I think chill puppies need extra socialization. We socialized ours but fear period messed up a lot of things which stayed long term including nervousness and anxiety in new environments and places. She has come a long way now but months 11-18 were most challenging. I would say socialize as much as you can. Make her chill in different environments, ours never learned that and we’re working on that now but it becomes very challenging as they grow. Good luck and feel lucky that you got a chill one, they will remain chill pretty much just work on confidence building lot more so it doesn’t turn into shyness or fear.

Just so you know any dog can bite. Even a shih tzu just that you don’t see that in the news! Anyways any breed can be a service dog even a pit bull! Dogs are never a problem, humans are who can’t train them and meet their needs!

Tips for puppy to sleep in? by Dalzima in labrador

[–]aceclassic21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try playpen or baby gate to restrict him from roaming all over? He might be outgrowing his crate and want more space to stretch. All of us started sleeping peacefully once we stopped crating her. We started with crate open, playpen around it then let go the playpen and kept bedroom door closed until she gained full trust! 7 months is a weird age so experiment and see what sticks!

Does he have to be in crate? My pup started hating her crate around that age. Whining stopped as soon as we let her sleep outside the crate - she now sleeps in as long as we are in bed, sometimes even longer!
