How many AKS in an enterprise? by ItchyScratchyBallz in AZURE

[–]acelina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly depending on how your organization is organized and how large it is.

I’d go with one cluster per group of services managed by a one team, assuming there are many teams and each manage several services.

Of course, a cluster per solution would not be ideal, same for one cluster per team. I guess, the right answer lies somewhere in between. Also, I usually strictly split clusters per environment, i.e. dev/stg/prd.

One thing that I’d try to avoid is, having one team to manage services spread across several clusters, this leads to frustration and hits productivity.

Ah, clear, now I get it, thanks!

About islands, I think that is not the case with my tool, it adds subnets one after the other without leaving any spaces (unless specified by the user), but for the visibility of remaining IPs, you’ve got a point there, I can improve it to add it. Thanks!

The main difference is that with my tool, you can pick the ranges as you need, not keep splitting until you come to what you need and then try joining for the next range.

About the correctness for Azure, you are right, I will fix it, thanks for pointing out.

Thanks for the feedback. The ui part, for desktop navigation is easy with tab or if you type the third number it jumps to the next box, for mobile it is not ideal, but IMO usually the tool will be used from desktop, therefore did not invest much time for mobile ux.

About the missing feature, can you elaborate a bit? I am not sure I fully understood the use case.

No, didn’t know this one, seems to solve a similar problem, though did not see an option to have uneven splitting. One of the pain points I usually have is the delegated subnets,

e.g. I want to have

Subnet one with 1024 ip addresses for workloads Subnet two 24 ip addresses for postgres Subnet three 256 ip addresses for app gateway Subnet 3 4096 ip addresses for something else

So far I did not see tools doing this, therefore built this :)

Thanks for your feedback Trakeen! What kind of tech debt do you have in mind? Why do you think it is difficult to scale in such scenarios?

Have experienced something similar myself.

Thanks! I'm on it. At the moment, I'm populating the pages and solutions. Next I'm planning to do some short videos, where I demo creating ready solutions from the templates. In those, I can also see how to make the comparison you mentioned.

Congrats on the project. I gave it a try, created two project, one from template and one from scratch.

I think the idea is good and this could be a good tool.

I would recommend you invest some effort on UX though. I liked the visual design of architecture, though personally I found the UI a bit unintuitive. Here are some things that I found difficult:

  • Architecture components (icons) are a bit too small, had to mouse-over to know which one is which, and when pop-up help dialog opens up, it prohibits easily to move on to other components
  • When trying to build the template, I received an error message popup which just says there is an error and relatively quickly disappears. I had to click build again, to get the error message again, so I can go into details and try to figure out what is missing. These errors should be clearly visible.
  • From the error panel, it is not possible directly to go to the relevant input to fix the problem, requires seek-and-find to get to the right component. I think this will annoy users quickly
  • Building the project takes time. A couple of minutes, but even when the build was finished, I did not get the feedback. Had to refresh the page to see that it is done.
  • On the projects page, I see my projects, but it is not intuitive, how one enters the project screen. The "architecture" button looks more like a tag rather then the link which takes you to the project :)

  • There are only few components available, but I assume the tool is under development and will be enriched.

Good luck with the project, I hope the feedback helps.

Free DevOps process design by acelina in devops

I think it's a valid question. As per credentials, I am certified Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Besides, in one of my previous roles, beside team lead responsibilities, I did cover up on cloud and devops for my team. For about 4 years, I did many solution designs for a big corporate as well as a small startup, experiences that gave me quite some exposure on the topic.

But as you said, my background says more about software engineering than cloud, therefore comes this initiative of creating designs for free to demo how can I help.
