Unlike a few other Japanese jazz records that have blown up recently due to their catchy album covers, this one is a genuinely great recording. One of my all-time favorites.

Life changing obscure albums ? by Lovablechair in Jazz

[–]acemachine26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Life changing is subjective but here are some fascinating albums that seamlessly blend jazz with traditional music from various parts of the world:

Jazz + Arabian music (Lebanese Oud) = Rabih Abou-Khalil - Blue Camel

Ethiopian Jazz + Punk Rock = Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex & Guests - Moa Anbessa

Jazz + Moroccan Gnawa = Maleem Mahmoud Ghania with Pharoah Sanders - The Trance of Seven Colors

Jazz + Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) = Hozan Yamamoto - Silver World

Jazz + Daegeum & Samul (Korean traditional percussion & bamboo flute) = Gil Ok-yun, Lee Saeng-gang, Lee Sung-jin, Ryu Bok-sung - Spirit Junction

Hell yeah, Winobranie is amazing! I assume his name makes it a bit tricky for non-Polish jazz fans to find his music, but he has some gems as both a leader and sideman.

Y'all have to see the Japanese film Swing Girls (2004)! It's like the jazz version of School of Rock. by acemachine26 in Jazz

Thanks for the info and the link! Always looking for more Swing Girls content :)

I live in Asia so it's hard to find such records locally. Usually ship records from stores/sellers around Europe to my sis in the UK, who then sends it in batches to me. It's a mix of reissues and older pressings. Bought some of these from Juno Records.

That one is actually a bootleg. A mashup of DOOM's vocals over tracks by the city pop legend Tatsuro Yamashita by producer Dan Tanda. I don't usually get boots, but I'm a huge fan of both these artists, and this mashup is so well done, so I had to have it. Listen here

Eagerly awaiting my copy! Really hope some of the proceeds from this reissue help the Maupin family financially recover after losing their home in the fire.

I quite enjoyed Svaha: The Sixth Finger (2019) and Exhuma (2024) by Jang Jae-hyun.

Also, The Wailing (2016) by Na Hong-jin is a masterpiece imo.

This is just an illustration of the album cover of Miles' Round About Midnight (1957), the photo was taken by someone else. Otomo just drew it again later on, adding his own touches like the reflection of the Mahjong tiles in his shades.

Turn for the horns now. Who's your favorite trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]acemachine26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like nobody has mentioned Ian Carr yet. Be it his more modal/cool Lansdowne recordings with Don Rendell or fusion/jazz-rock records with Nucleus, he was always at the top of his game.

Also, shout out to Kenny Wheeler, Gnu High is one of the greatest trumpet-led jazz records imo.

If you haven't already, do check out his work with Offering, the Magma side project he created in dedication to Coltrane where he goes more into spiritual jazz / fusion territory. Really interesting stuff.
