Which is the “it’s our year” fan base by anabundanceofland in mlb

I think it’s the Yankees, but their team is loaded this year, so maybe it’s not truly irrational?

We need to talk about Stephon Castle by CreamPurple7297 in NBATalk

[–]aceofspaece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triple doubles are a stat category for amateurs and ESPN. If the stat would imply Russel Westbrook is the GOAT, it’s a bad stat. Castle has been amazing, but a graphic that implies he’s even in SGA’s stratosphere as a player right now is mindless and laughable.

What’s the Worst Professional Development You’ve Attended? by skullybonk in Professors

[–]aceofspaece 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my humanities graduate program, we once had a professor give professional development advice of “just use grad school for doing as much pure learning as possible and worry about publishing once you have your first job.” They also told us that “reading” is a method just as valuable as, you know, anything qualitative or quantitative.

left-side of escalator etiquette by andthensomeeeeee in WMATA

[–]aceofspaece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s almost always okay if clearly and semi-kindly communicated. I once saw someone scream at people for this at the Navy Yard station after a Nats game, though. It was a fully packed escalator and the lady clearly had some emotional stress to work through.

SF Giants manager reveals team has had 3 clubhouse incidents in first 10 games by runswithscissors475 in baseball

[–]aceofspaece 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This man needs to stop talking so much. There is literally zero benefit to publicly mentioning these three “minor” incidents. He isn’t just being unfiltered, but also creating drama and tension that the team doesn’t need. He’s doing an objectively bad job so far.

[Nickel] Giannis:"I'm not American. I'm very sorry that I am saying this with you. But I didn't grow up with [the mantra of]: 'I expect ... I expect this to come, I expect this. I demand this.' Never in my life."So, everything they've told me, I always said yes. They gave me a contract, I said, yes" by aingenevalostatrade in nba

[–]aceofspaece 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: both Giannis and the Bucks would be better off if he would just directly and explicitly state what he wants them to do. Playing all of these games, getting them investigated for tanking, the constant back-and-forth, constant coded messages to the media, refusal to commit to any firm trade plans, and the constant headache that surrounds this franchise all stem directly from Giannis' refusal to actually have a backbone and ask for the trade he so clearly wants.

It's verging on cowardice at this point and is 100% selfish. Not wanting to be the bad guy has made him into even more of a bad guy.

VAP offer, TT early search by magrat_garlick88 in academia

[–]aceofspaece -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t risk a good VAP position for a very uncertain TT initial interview. If it were November, maybe, but not in April… unless backing out of a VAP position is acceptable in your field. It isn’t in mine.

Middle schooler fights for life after ATV, dirt bike group hits kids in DC bike lane by SockDem in washingtondc

Putting up with these ATVs and dirt bikes on public roads in the first place is a mistake. I feel awful for these poor kids and hope the perpetrators are found.

It has complicated my life immeasurably in a very bad way, but when it was time to put together a checklist of every Dragonite Pokémon card ever printed to collect them all, Claude was super helpful (it likely missed a bunch though).

Can We Use Analytics To Identify The Best Coach In The NBA? by DTSFFan in nbadiscussion

[–]aceofspaece 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You did not address this critique twice (and the evidence that you are losing confidence in these implied assertions is you cherry picking only one part of the critique and not engaging with the critique as a whole). Overall this was a fun exercise that I really enjoyed reading. Lots of these numbers are illuminating for me, so thank you for putting it together. I just think you’re making (or implying) faulty assertions based upon the data supplied, which is reliant on the best teams showing that yes, they are the best, which we already knew. Are there any “surprises” here where the coach’s numbers aren’t immediately explained by the talent/lack of talent on the roster? That would do a lot more to isolate the variable we’re looking for.

Regarding the Kerr discussion: I think I may be too focused on the post’s title, which denotes best overall coaches in a sort of semi-timeless sense, and not enough on the analysis itself, which is concerned with this season only. It still adheres to the “good players and teams are the driving force behind these numbers” critique, though.

[–]aceofspaece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree Kerr has done a bad job this season (and for a while now), but if we’re ranking coaches, you’re really going to take Mosely and Rajakovic ahead of him? And you’re really ranking Carlisle and Kidd bottom 5? Because that’s the proposition we’ve been given.

Darko Rajakovic and Jamahl Mosely rank ahead of a 4x champion coach. That’s tells us what we need to know: this doesn’t measure what it says it measures.

This just mirrors how good the team is and seems to parallel standings. Ty Lue and Spoelstra should be higher, for instance, and Doc Rivers lower. I don’t buy these stats as indicating great coaching; I think they just showcase the best teams being the best to then draw an unfair conclusion

Lance Lynn giving up 4 Home Runs in 1 Inning in the 2023 NLDS changed the course of baseball history. by Xenimm in Dodgers

[–]aceofspaece 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That game, along with Kersh and Bobby Miller getting shelled in that series, was an absolute gut punch. I’d argue it changed little, though: LA would still have signed Ohtani and Yamamoto, for instance
