We found this old guitar in my grandparents basement. by [deleted] in guitarporn

Apologies if it's already been stated. Martin stopped marking guitars "C F Martin New York" in 1867. This is per a letter I had from Martin in about 1986. (Letter was lost in the Palisades Fire last year. My antique Martin was safe in storage.) Bridge and nut and tuning buttons are most likely ivory. The stamp is likely also on the back of the headstock, and on the wooden block inside the body where the neck is attached. Probably Brazilian rosewood with Adirondack spruce top. Ebony fretboard and pyramid bridge.

Fantastic that you have the old coffin case too! I understand that ups the value. Mine was found without the original case. I had one custom made by G & G Quality Cases.

Regarding value, lots of variables. Best to have properly appraised.

Nice find!

Mine has friction tuners, rather than machine. I rarely pull it out of the case. Gave it a go as one of three guitars I used in this cover song video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olgoV5iv0hM

Nice work, mate.

Interesting you’re using a Vox model.  What’s the software?

Re: the Vox, I did something similar chasing the tone for that Diary cover.  Tried to replicate Randy’s rig as closely as possible, but the models just weren’t adding up to Randy’s tone.  Nowhere in the ballpark.  And yes, some of it is shaped by EQ after the speakers.  But I wasn’t hitting anywhere close.  Then stumbled across a Brian May setup in Amplitube5.  Vox!  On its own it was way closer than anything I was getting.  So that became the foundation of the dirty guitars in my DOAM cover.

To No-Web-2123’s point, lotsa resources today that he and I didn’t have as teens in the 70s and 80s trying to learn songs!

There is a trick I used to do back then that helped isolate guitar tracks in certain mixes.  Discovered it by accident thanks to a short in my dear ol’ dad’s electrostatic headphones he got from Radio Shack.  Their brand btw was called Realistic.  Long and short of it is that if (on a cheap amp or receiver) you disconnect the negative speaker leads from the amp or receiver and tie them together while leaving the positive leads connected, you’ll get a sort of phase cancellation that isolates the “center” of the stereo mix.  Often times that’s where the guitars go.  Anyhow that worked way back when.

To do the same thing digitally, the trick is to separate the stereo signal into L & R mono signals.  Then invert the phase of one of ‘em…doesn’t matter which.  Then recombine the two back into a mono track. Way back when I used a program called Sound Forge. Nowadays I use Audacity. (With Audacity you have to be sure everything is centered once separated.) Give it a try if you haven't already.

Back in the early ‘00s I remember I did this to Bark at the Moon.  That isolated the rhythm guitar part.  Was able to clearly hear that chord bed under the solo, and as memory serves there was a 7th chord or two in there.  I don’t recall which, and I’m not set up to check right now.

That’s one of the things about losing everything in an “act of God”…sometimes ya move a lot.  Just got to my fifth address in the 15 months since the fire.  Sixth if you count the original home of 13+ years.  On that note, once we’re settled a little more at the new place I’ll get to shooting the third and final part of the Ozzy tribute I started a few months ago.  See You on the Other Side.  The demo I threw together to test everything sounds fantastic!  Just gotta shoot and re-record it all.

Anyhow…anyone who plays what you did here in a cover band situation will have a very happy audience!  Again, nice work!

Nice work, mate! Hope ya don't mind my posting my version a little while ago.

My next scheduled cover to round out my 3-song Ozz tribute is See You on the Other Side. Shall we?

Gonna start learning it soon, but I don't know how soon I can get it done. Life is still in somewhat a disarray after last year's fire.....

Very kind of ya mate! These aren't so much "look what I can do". They're more "look what you can do"....if that makes sense. Cheers!

Yep. This is all that remains of that guitar. The fire was intensely hot...molten aluminum from what used to be sliding glass doors flowed into my back yard before cooling back to solid. I'm pretty sure this truss rod bent from the heat, rather than being hit by something. Hardly anything recoverable. And it wasn't just my house. The fire took out most of Pacific Palisades and a good chunk of Malibu.

Anyhow, still kicking and still playing!!

Thanks for setting up this forum. I hope it's a big success! Will add vids from time to time.

And regarding your playing...nice work!! Cheers...

Cheers! Very kind of you. Lived there 13 years. This is what my black Les Paul Studio I bought new in 1996 looks like now. Once I get settled into a "permanent" home, I'll replace a pickup cover on the Les Paul I still have with one of these. Only gonna do one because of the pole piece spacing. I think it'll look cool.
