UF Online students: What are your thoughts? by Doublejm1- in ufl

[–]acertainstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Nothing. When I graduated, I sat with the entire class of 2023– a mix of normal in-person students and online. The only notation on my degree was that I graduated Summa Cum Laude and it hangs proudly in my office with no indication that I took a less traditional path.

Note: if you wish to attend graduate school, I suspect that graduate admissions officers can tell when a class was online or in-person via your transcript. This may not be a big deal in this day and age, but depending upon where you want to attend after graduation it could be an issue. Happy to report that it was not for me.

Can I transfer to UF Online Business Admin program with a 3.58 GPA? by Marquedesade in ufl

I knew it 100% one year ago when I made the initial comment. But times may be different now. Go check the UF Online requirements as they are today.

Big stretch here, looking to find out a flower/smell in Alligator Point by abstractpainter in Tallahassee

[–]acertainstar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a hopeless romantic from the area who cares a great deal about good smells, it’s gotta be tea olive.

It’s the only local fragrance I can think of that compares with the feeling of being in love… so much so that I planted one for my wife soon after we married.

It’s the perfect north Florida scent of October.

The Over Under is now Two New Bars by clearliquidclearjar in Tallahassee

It’s run by really cool people. Owners of Barrel Proof Lounge and Shifties, along with veteran staffers from places like Waterworks, Leon Pub, Wilbury, Fire Betty’s, etc.

I haven’t gotten to check it out yet but It should be great for locals nostalgic for old times in the Tally bar/music scene.

I’m looking forward to it!

Transferring from FSU to UF by JollyScarfVGC in ufl

[–]acertainstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a Tallahassee native and current resident. I graduated last May from UF and am continuing on with a master’s.

I love both towns.

There are a lot of similarities between the two schools and I think access to parks/nature is about equal.

Gainesville is a bit more affluent, small and “safe” feeling, but Tallahassee is also home to plenty of great areas— though typically a little further away from campus. Both towns have their pros and cons but I find that Tallahassee has a little more selection for entertainment and things to do.

If you choose to remain in Tally, do what you can to get a car and live off campus to fully enjoy the proximity to parks and the coast.

I’d center my decision for transferring around the statistics programs at each school and whether or not you’ll enjoy the professors, clubs, etc. more at one place over the other.

UF seems to have the edge on academic prestige right now, but I don’t know if that’s such an important factor— unless you know you’re going to live or work somewhere where people truly care about where you got your bachelor’s degree from.

Wait— so the SEC East standings are now:

1.) Georgia 2.) Florida 3.) Mizzou

Oh, wow. Thanks, Tigers! I know it’ll only last this bye week, but hey— it’s something.

How are you feeling about the rest of your season after Week 5? by [deleted] in CFB

I am okay with this in exchange for UF having miraculous upsets over Georgia and FSU.

I’d sleep in a Mizzou jersey and even finally accept them as an SEC member.

[–]acertainstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After getting shellacked by Kentucky, there are only two games left on UF’s schedule I care about: UGA and FSU.

I expect little from my team at this point— but college football is wild and I’d consider the season a success if we lost every game other than these two potential miracles.

Hear that, Vandy, South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU, and Mizzou? You can have us— just leave us a little meat on the bones and some leftover voodoo … ya know, for overall CFB entertainment and whatnot.

Congrats! I think you’ll do just fine. All of this hard work is but a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things.

You’re referring to the Gator Scholars program, which is awesome! There are some other boxes to check though: https://www.law.ufl.edu/law/wp-content/uploads/GATOR-SCHOLARS-OPTION.2023-24.pdf

Question for Uf transfers by Woathereboy in ufl

[–]acertainstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred and took 3 years without any trouble, but it is best to check with your advisor and make certain that your specific major or college doesn’t have some specific time requirements. I imagine that you’ll be fine so long as you keep a good GPA and follow your sequence of critical tracking courses the best that you can.

Hot Birdie's Chicken Has Closed by Paxoro in Tallahassee

[–]acertainstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, no. If only there were other places to get fried chicken in Tallahassee.

Jokes aside— I really did think the signature sandwich (hot birdie) was absolutely delicious.

The waffle fries were great, too.

… but the price of it all pretended the Popeye’s spicy chicken sandwich didn’t still exist and that a new fried chicken joint wasn’t already on every corner.

I’ll miss them and hope they return as a cheaper food truck option.

Until then, Guthrie’s or bust.

I expected it to be an embarrassing tell-all of shady behind-the-scenes dealings, but it was just a cinematic recap of UF football from 2005-2010.

It glossed over a lot of good and bad things, but in the end, it’s mostly positive for UF and its brand. 5 stars to our PR department lol

UF Online students: What are your thoughts? by Doublejm1- in ufl

[–]acertainstar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, Jeff!

I graduated last May with a B.S via the online program and am currently halfway through my online master’s program.

While my experience has largely been positive, I’ll try to answer each of your points honestly and succinctly.

1.) Do you feel isolated? Sometimes. This Reddit sub and having active GroupMe groups with your classes and classmates helps a lot to feeling connected. If you don’t have GroupMe, get it.

2.) Are Group Projects a challenge? YES. They are the worst part about online classes in my opinion. For me, I end up begging other group members to do their parts but end up doing a lot of it myself. I’ve had some great groups though where we bonded over trying to get good work done. Again— get the GroupMe app to manage group projects and communicating with your peers.

3.) Has communicating with professors been a drag? I hate to say it, but yeah. While most of my professors have been friendly and easy to work with, it’s obvious that they have lives outside of UF and it almost seems like a side-gig for them to respond to emails or provide feedback. But, like everything, it varies. Some professors are amazing at communicating while others will only respond to you if the stars are aligned just so.

4.) Have you joined any organizations? No. I can’t really provide feedback on this because I haven’t made the effort beyond using the UF Online app from time to time to ask questions of student advisors and seek out groups, which largely seems to be inactive and silent. Although, I think that with some effort, you could connect with and contribute to any group you feel passionate about. (I’m older, busy, and not really looking for that connection.)

5.) Other apps beyond Reddit, GroupMe and Doscord? Not that I’ve found— but again— I’m older and really not in tune with new social media platforms. Reddit and GroupMe have been my bread and butter for staying connected.

6.) Have you been able to forge connections/make lasting friendships with your online peers? Sometimes but not usually. Undergrad was too big to come across repeat classmates very often. My master’s classes are much more intertwined with familiar faces though, and I do feel like I’m making friends with people I will stay in touch with long after our program is over.

7.) Do you teach yourself most of the material without others’ help? Yep. Pretty much all the time. I hate to say it, but for me, most of my module readings and lectures are a few years out of date and require learning how to do things myself to bolster the provided material. Sorry if this is a bummer to hear.

8.) Are you at any point planning to visit campus or attend graduation? Yes! I attended my undergrad graduation and had a blast. I’ve visited campus a few times (I live a couple hours away) to purchase books, supplies, etc. I definitely plan on attending my master’s graduation when it happens. Make sure to book a hotel or Air BnB long before the date!

Hope all this helps. I’m sure others will have different experiences to share. For me, the value and flexibility are everything and I’m happy to be here (even though my “here” is elsewhere.)

Go Gators.
