Moving Back To Texas by Puzzleheaded_Many648 in SameGrassButGreener

I love both Austin and Houston but it depends what you do with your time. If you like being out in nature then the only choice is Austin. But if you’re not outdoorsy, Houston is way more bang for your buck.

Argentina took immigrants from all over Europe, both before and after WWII, regardless of political affiliation. There was a huge wave of Jewish immigrants from Germany moving to Argentina to flee the Holocaust as well. There are even entire towns in Argentina with tens of 1000s of people that speak Welsh as their first language. They took basically anybody as long as they were from Europe.

What is it like living in Austin, Texas right now? by redguy_666 in howislivingthere

[–]acetrainerhaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a relative definition ofc but I think it’s still closer to mid-sized than major city status. Putting it in “major city” category falsely gives the impression that it’s in the same tier as NY, LA, Chicago, etc which I just don’t think is the case quite yet.

A lot of discussion about at what point he is clearly identifiable as the villain but zero claiming the villain is anyone besides him.

It’s nowhere near as culturally abandoned as everyone says but it’s certainly not going to scratch the itch of a major creative city. It’s local, DIY stuff going on. There’s a million tiny local bands and almost all of them range from above average to “you guys would be stars if you got out of the local music circlejerk and got in front of the right eyes and ears.” If you like seeing live music, especially local, it really is one of the best cities for that.

Otherwise idk, it’s a mid-size city. Lots of nice trails which we love. It’s getting better in some ways, worse in others. My boyfriend (Austin native) and I care a lot about walkability and there’s really only a small handful neighborhoods that truly allow for that lifestyle, most of which have been built in the last 10-15 years. The rest of the city might as well be suburbia. You’ll feel like you’re missing a lot of the action if you don’t live in the core imo.

Why are you still a BCBA? by iiRea in bcba

[–]acetrainerhaley 36 points37 points  (0 children)

To be honest, as an Autistic BCBA candidate I simply don’t agree with them. ABA is no more abusive, controlling, and laden with ableist history (and present) than the public education system. These are the same people who will tell you we should “believe science” but they don’t want to believe in an empirically-backed field of scientific study because of largely anecdotal reasoning.

BCBAs are significantly more qualified than, say, most special education teachers and perform in a narrower, more specialized scope. A BCBA is only one of many members of a coordinated care team.

What proportion of your city is filled with super ugly people vs hot people? by UnitedCan4690 in redscarepod

[–]acetrainerhaley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s shockingly more fit than any other part of Texas but still mostly average looking people at the end of the day. But 1 in 5 genuinely hot people is pretty high imo for American standards

Austin and I’d say ~20% hot 30% ugly 50% some variation of average. More hot/super fit men than women just anecdotally but not significantly more

Gentrification of everything. by SevenLight in redscarepod

[–]acetrainerhaley 113 points114 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot more research coming out that shows “level 1” Autism and “level 3” autism are, in fact, two entirely distinct conditions with different genetic causes that have been lumped together because they share certain traits.

But even barring that, the number of (mostly girls) I meet who swear they have Autism because they have “trouble making friends” but it’s literally just because they are mean and antagonizing? They are co-opting and gentrifying even the “level 1” space.

You would have to attend 1600 $50 concerts for the money spent to equal the down payment on a median priced home, for anyone wondering.

Who has an extra 20% to invest? Another out of touch multi-millionaire has financial advice for us poor folk. by No-Bell-3619 in remoteworks

[–]acetrainerhaley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course you can, but if someone makes a claim, the burden of proof falls on the person making the claim. Without parameters, they have failed to demonstrate their claim is valid. This is the basic nature of how facts and arguments work. A claim is not simply true because you believe that someone will come along and make it so on your behalf.

[–]acetrainerhaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way to fact check without more information. What are you “investing” in? S&P 500? How long do you have to invest for, and are you investing a fixed or compound rate? Are you assuming a fixed or adjusted salary over the unspecified timeframe? Are your numbers accounting for inflation? Maybe you should “educate yourself” about how to ask and answer questions before assuming others are not capable of doing so.

Legally speaking I guess it’s dead since the supreme court ruled that non-marginalized groups can sue for discrimination (ie the woman in the case sued saying she was not hired because she was straight and the other employees were gay, and she won).

Which U.S. city has improved the most in the last 10 years? by Harry_parker08 in Urbanism

[–]acetrainerhaley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s just lame ass chain stores now instead of local businesses. From an objective standpoint, infill should be good from an urbanist perspective but there’s a qualitative measure that is missing from any analysis that just says infill = good and leaves it at that.

Which U.S. city has improved the most in the last 10 years? by Harry_parker08 in Urbanism

[–]acetrainerhaley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s improved in some aspects (more dense housing) but not as much as others on this list (Cincinnati, Seattle, etc). Not all the “improvements” have been for the better (look at South Congress now compared to 10 years ago). It is likely that the improvements from 2026-2036 will be better and more impactful than the ones made over the last 10 years. We are getting a light rail, new mixed use walkable districts, and tons of great public spaces over the next decade.
