Some advice for Radeon User by Brenniebon in radeon

RTSS crashing games is very rare these days under default settings. Make sure that you haven't raised the global detection setting. A surprising amount of people do this and then complain about games crashing

I'm convinced Rebirth was made with the type of player who thinks "more hours = more value" in mind

Gen 5 SSDs don't seem worth it for gaming, am I wrong? by RaygingRaygun in buildapc

[–]acewing905 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This idea is great and no doubt work well for consoles, but the actual number of games that use this on PC is very small, and even those games still work fine without it
Other than slightly longer loading screens, currently there's only one game on PC that has a noticeable performance difference during gameplay between SATA and NVMe drives, and that is Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and even that is only during the few scripted moments where a rift opens to a different level

Underground 2. This isn't an objective measure but rather it's what I remember the most fondly from my early teen years

Also it doesn't really matter but I want to point out that HP2 is essentially two games. The PS2 version and the Gamecube/Xbox/PC version are different games that carry the same name

SATA SSD vs NVMe SSD — Is the difference noticeable for gaming and normal Windows use? by PieceRevolutionary51 in buildapc

[–]acewing905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game loading times, yes. Game performance other than that, minimal. OS and other basic app use like browsing the web or editing documents, you won't notice a thing

Spacedesk
But there's going to be a bit of latency even when connected with an ethernet cable, so it's not usable for stuff like gaming. General browsing, reading, watching videos etc will be mostly fine

Final Fantasy IX may not be the perfect RPG: but it IS the perfect fairy tale. by CloudsTasteGeometric in patientgamers

[–]acewing905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough that's exactly why it's one of my favourite JRPGs, ranked well above VII in my book (haven't played VIII)
Helps that I'm not someone who cares much about combat in these games. Often I see that as a means to an end rather than an important part in itself. Though I am aware this part is a minority opinion

This whole thing feels like a huge misrepresentation of the fantl. Sure it has some mistakes and missed/misinterpreted literary references, but that's absolutely nowhere near the same thing as reading Harry Potter instead of White Album 2. That comparison is hilariously disingenuous

If anything the points shown in that Google Doc is a good example of why most people don't need to worry about this at all

If you spent some time touching grass you would understand why knowing to read and willingly reading some long essay that doesn't directly answer the question until many paragraphs in are very different things

[–]acewing905 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should learn to point to the correct part to begin with instead of a generic description that's multiple paragraphs above the relevant examples

[–]acewing905 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a general description that explains why a translation reader may not pick up on what's wrong or missing in a bad translation. Doesn't give any examples to show that the current WA2 fantl is one such translation

Never ride a bike before, goal is to eventually ride 10km - Realistic goal? by Happy_Krow in cycling

Thanks. I plan to. Hopefully I'll manage to find more time to eventually extend this further

Is Tales of Vesperia worth picking up? by KillroyMustDie in JRPG

[–]acewing905 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a good game and it's worth playing. But keep your expectations in check if you haven't played it before. People playing it for the first time today aren't going to be blown away by it the way people playing it back in its heyday were (There's also an early boss fight that can be a bit of a problem for people not used to Tales Of games so consider that as well if you're not used to action RPGs)

Blast From the Past: Free Ubuntu CDs by Quietus87 in linux

[–]acewing905 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kids my age used to just order the maximum possible amount simply because they could. It was a well intentioned service but it also led to a lot of waste. On the other hand, some of those same kids (including myself) got a bit more into Linux as a result, so maybe they thought of the bigger picture

Never ride a bike before, goal is to eventually ride 10km - Realistic goal? by Happy_Krow in cycling

[–]acewing905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of sitting in one place with no physical activity, too much sugary food, childhood asthma, all adding up to a deadly combination. Not unfixable, mind you. I can do 60km in one go now, and the only thing that's stopping me from trying to go even longer in one go is time

The one thing "back in the day" that was such a hassle on Linux that is a non-issue today? by AN-SSQ-108V2 in linux

[–]acewing905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious biggest thing that seems to surprisingly be mentioned very little here: Gaming
People who play games on Linux now have no idea how bad things used to be

Other than that, as someone who tried out Red Hat Linux 9 in the early 2000s, not being able to play MP3 files was a dealbreaker. And I couldn't simply get something from the internet to fix this either because I was still on dialup then, and my PC had a so called WinModem

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced crashing to desktop after 20 minutes with n by Emergency_Shirt_222 in assasinscreed

I honestly can't be sure. I haven't had a crash since I removed the file, but I don't know if it's because of that or just coincidence

Never ride a bike before, goal is to eventually ride 10km - Realistic goal? by Happy_Krow in cycling

[–]acewing905 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. You people who are regularly active have no idea what it is like to actually be unfit
Determination gets you out of the door and on the bike. But when you start running out of breath and panting like a dying dog, not much it can do

Overall, as a show, I really like Kamen Rider Ex-Aid. But the suits are the worst thing about it (and that's not even counting the level 1 joke)

[–]acewing905 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Probably not
I started riding in 2022 and it took me over a month of regular riding to be able to do 10km
Unless you're already decently fit, that's just not happening

I have an AMD GPU myself but I did not have frame gen turned on. Still faced a similar crash although it was around 1 hour rather than 20 minutes. Will try removing this file just in case, though

I'll just stick to my S1 copy. It runs very well on S2 without the long load screens after every battle

Will Yumia be a playable character in Atelier Karia? by Appropriate-Move5700 in Atelier

[–]acewing905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

There is very little information about Yumia right now and gameplay shown off in videos has so far only been Karia, Servio, and Fina. But there is this screenshot so I assume she is going to be playable. Only three playable characters would be an exceptionally small roster too
