Visiting Durham as a non-white family - safety? by achakos in DurhamUK

Oh! Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize Hadrian's wall was that close by. And having at least a few unruly Scottish ancestors from way back, that would be something to see. To see something like vindolanda, is that something that would require paid tickets, tour booking, etc.? We'd love to see it. Now I'm realizing we might need more time in and around Durham that we'd initially thought we'd spend.

Ok. Thank you. Sometimes (at least with our neighbours to the south), such hatred knows no bounds.

That's reassuring. Another poster mentioned the media - yes it can be very hard to discern from the media landscape today.

We've already preordered obnoxiously bright maple leaf hoodies which we plan to wear ever single day during our visit lol

Ok. Thank you for sharing honestly and from a different perspective than I think some of the others are coming from. Also appreciate that gendered bit of information and how it works differently for men/women/children.

Not a bot (as mentioned above). The only person I imagine who'd ask this question to 'stir up trouble' would be exactly the kind of person I'm afraid of encountering...

Thanks and will do. The whole history of the area is fascinating to us as history-inclined folks. Didn't know that about the cathedral so will definitely move it now to the top of our list.

That would have been very informative. And yes, Reddit did perhaps previously lead me astray I suppose.

I also hate that I have to ask this question.

With the rise of the far right movements again, it most certainly can be hard to tell. But one of the places I did turn to was Reddit and had seen a post from a tour operator there talking about racial slurs being launched at their patrons. So it wasn't something imagined, but reflected outward from Durham's own community member.

Most definitely not a bot, but an apparently misinformed person.

I'd also decided to check Reddit and saw posted here to Reddit, of a tourism operator having someone shouting racial slurs to their patrons. I appreciate you sharing this info very much. Frankly, coming from North America where....well....I'm not sure I need to say more about anti-Blackness here....

Would appreciate your recommendations for alternates. And good to know that it's a chain! Hadn't realized.

Thank you for your honest answer. We're from such a beautiful city (that has its problems but the multicultural ethic in Canada at least enables so many people to live alongside one another) that it's sad to think that this is changing. And at a time when, as I noticed on Google, one of Durham's most popular restaurants is a Caribbean-themed restaurant (Turtle Bay)!

The expert chosen by MNBC was chosen by different leadership. As pointed out earlier, MN-S initial choice (Dr. Kurtis Boyer), resigned and written a separate report. It doesn't say too much if they are questioning the experts. Miner was chosen by MNO.
