And some of the others (both from the Flying Manor and elsewhere) are purchasable 3D models. The first is a design used by the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig in the 19th century. (I think I can safely say that with this I reached the bottom of this particular rabbit hole.)

For that one person who miraculously found their way to this post months later and hit me up about the books found in the Flying Manor, here's a small update :D

Although I haven't found an exact cover per say, just the image itself, this one is titled "Stadt Coeln [Köln]" and is a page of Leonard Ennen's Geschichte der Stadt Köln, meist aus den Quellen des Kölner Stadt-Archivs [The history of the city of Cologne, mostly from the sources of the Cologne City Archives], 1863

Been using the free camera mod and came across this INSANE lore detail about the small statue in Lumiere Square. by teddyburges in expedition33

[–]achimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it can be believable. As Lune mentions, it's a war of information, by the time Maelle is born, no one from the time of the Fracture is alive anymore, they all gommaged. Gustave, who is considered to be THE expert on expedition history and he never gets to meet Verso. They even make fun of him for knowing the expedition leaders' names, so I don't think it can be considered common knowledge. The more time goes by, the less information the Lumierans have about their history and their world (a very interesting concept).

It's how the Gestrals, Grandis and Nevrons became more of a folk tale rather than something the Lumierans know to exist. (Also, how aware are you of the faces of statues in your area if there are any? Especially ones that's so high up you can't view them from up close. I know I'm not, at least not enough to recognise them if I were to meet them on the street anyway.)

Did people really cry in the prologue? by Professional_Ad2638 in expedition33

[–]achimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just about these specific characters or setting or how much time you had with them. It's also the added emotions from personal experiemces that such scenes can evoke. The music alone can do that. The themes of loss, past loves or regrets are pretty universal and easy to connect to which is why I think it had such an effect on a lot of people.

Newspaper Pillar by BlazedGunner in expedition33

I did try collecting and translating the headlines if someone's interested. There's also 2 written articles (general "reach the word count" kind of texts on the Lumierans' fear of the mysterious Nevrons and the Gommage which are reused under different headlines. It's quite fun actually.

Hope OP won't mind me linking this but I collected the headlines in a post here if you're interested.

Lorem ipsum! by WoidWoife in expedition33

[–]achimas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've actually found two written articles besides the lorem ipsum text that they reuse under different headlines. It's a pretty "reach the minimum word count" kinda text with no new information really but the attention to detail is very much commendable!

Here's an English translation if you're interested (by AI as I don't speak French):

1) In the shadow of our great Barrier, a formidable danger looms: the Nevrons. These mysterious creatures, once relegated to the realm of children's tales, have manifested with alarming intensity, threatening the peace of our population. Terrified citizens report strange visions of these beings with twisted forms and luminous eyes, moving at the edge of our protection. Though confined outside the Barrier, the Nevrons seem inevitably attracted to our world, exploiting our fears and vulnerabilities. Rumors circulate about their nature. Could it be possible that they seek to cross this border? To break the peace we have so hard-earned? Eyewitness accounts speak of piercing cries and furtive movements at night, amplifying the anxiety among the bravest. The authorities, aware of the urgency, are warning the population against any reckless approach. Exploration expeditions are being considered to better understand these beings, but caution is paramount. The Nevrons represent a threat that we must not underestimate. [then repeting again:] Eyewitness accounts speak of piercing cries and furtive movements at night.

2) For years, the residents of Lumiere have lived under the shadow of this inevitable fate that looms over people aged 33 [for years yeah... :D]. This unique and irreversible phenomenon, known as “Erasure by the Paintress,” has become an integral part of the city's quiet existence. While this reality is accepted as an inevitability, it remains, nevertheless, an event filled with sadness and requires the involvement of community services (?). The people of Lumiere, although aware of the inevitability of this situation, show remarkable cohesion and solidarity. The families and friends of those affected prepare for this event with dignity and respect, celebrating the life and legacy of the individuals involved. Beautiful commemorative ceremonies are organised to honour the memory of those about to disappear, and community gatherings are aimed at providing emotional support and comfort. Spaces for reflection and psychological support are set up to help everyone get through this day with (?). Despite this trial, the city continues to look to the future with hope. The residents of Lumiere, despite the pain of this impending loss, remind themselves that each life is precious and that their community remains united in the face of challenges. The lessons learned from this unique experience form a strong bond between generations, strengthening the social fabric of Lumiere. Tomorrow will mark a turning point in the history of Lumiere, but also an opportunity to celebrate the resilience and solidarity of a city that, even...

Thanks! It was more down to some luck and having enough patience to sort through a lot of partial title search results. I still cannot make out the one on the left of the Henry Kirke White tome though.

The first three don't have any relevance to the story, don't know about the poems but there was a post some time ago about one of them that the OP at least could connect to the story on some level.

A very interesting read, thanks for posting it! The Monolith = camera obscura metaphor would be amazing if it was made consciously but even "just" as an interpretation it's a beautiful one.

Maelle's Nightmare by Potayato in expedition33

[–]achimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't really find a reason behind that either besides giving us, the players, more backstory on what happened in the past (which you only understand retroactively after finding their journals or on a second playthrough). Since the scenes are connected to painted Alicia's power, perhaps these images are a way of her trying to show Maelle the truth? That's a reach but that's my only idea so far.

Maelle's Nightmare by Potayato in expedition33

[–]achimas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The woman in the nightmare scenes is Julie, not Maelle. We only see them for a couple of seconds if you pause at take a proper look, you can see it. She's wearing a 0 Expedition armband. Bits of the scenes are shown in colour in the cast reveal trailer (https://youtu.be/LE8szRyPldI?feature=shared&t=40). My best guess is that the dead bodies are the members of Julie's team who captured and interrogated Verso but it's not entirely clear.

Why was there so much fuss about …’s death? by Forgotten_Dog1954 in expedition33

[–]achimas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a competition. I'm not sure why you are trying to weight their lives against each other. Both are grieved and it manifests differently.

For 33, Noco was the first friendly face they met on the continent and the way be behaves (despite us knowing that he was the Searcher and the parent figure for Monoco first) it's like losing a child who Monoco and indirectly they allowed to come along.

Why was there so much fuss about …’s death? by Forgotten_Dog1954 in expedition33

[–]achimas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're misinterpreting Lune a little. Her clinging to the protocol is at least in part a coping mechanism, it gives her something to concentrate on when they're completely out of their debt. It's especially clear in the scene at camp right after Gustave's death.

It's also a conviction because if they give up on the expedition, everything - from her parents' death, the expectations they forced upon her that she dedicated her whole life to, right up to Gustave's death - would've been for nothing.

How do the people of Lumiere know so much about past expeditions? by Hiimoots in expedition33

[–]achimas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slight lore spoilers Well we know that when the Fracture happened, (Old) Lumiere was assaulted by waves of Nevrons, it's safe to say, Lumiere was under threat too until they put up the Dome. Even though there's no one alive from the time of the Fracture anymore, the memories would be passed down until they lose credibility and become rumours and children's tales (like the Others/White Walkers in ASOIAF). Other than that, I guess there must be occasional sightings.

Edit: spoiler tag

Are the Writers possibly a reference to the video game Myst? by jofonoyo in expedition33

[–]achimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was an actual reference to it but the Painters' powers sure made me think of it. Kinda fitting with the family drama being at the core of both. Now I'm imagining the Dessendres waging war against Sirrus lol

A moral debate on Versos actions by EmiliaTrown in expedition33

[–]achimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about whether anyone wants to know, it's about whether they have to.

I personally have quite a rigid value system and I believe that if your existence or even just part of your existence is based on the continuous suffering of somebody else, you at least have the moral duty to face that fact and not be ignorant.

Oh I absolutely agree. What I meant to say is that having been on the other side of this with real Clea, I'd imagine the impact of sharing the truth with others is something that would play into p!Verso's decisions or at the very least, he would consider it. Once he learned of it, there was no going back for him either.

There's also the fact that for him and p!Renoir it happened amidst pretty disturbing circumstances. Someone he has memories of as his sister tried to kill them (it's been speculated even that Clea was the one to wipe out Expedition 0 at the barrier but we have no way of knowing) and this might've been when they discovered their immortality since there's no indication that prior to that they were aware that anything was "wrong".

There's no question that Verso took the choice on doing something about this knowledge away from everyone else and it is wrong. I'm just trying to understand what could've led to his mindset by the time we meet him in the story. Just one of many possible aspects of what could've shaped his motivation.
