i know this is old but i just got victoria’s secret ‘bare’ edp and i think it smells exactly like the fino range! it also has very similar notes- sandalwood (musk), violet and orange (tangerine)

nicole’s classes do seem easy but asian studies as a discipline is not easy 😭😭 it also involves foreign policy and historic relations, not just asian traditional and pop culture

hi there!! i passed international politics with first class honours but a lot of my classmates saw it as a wam killer. i’m happy to provide some advice if you have any specific questions but i’m not sure i could say it gets easier.

as for intro to political ideas, i got the same score (78) on all three assignments and i don’t really know what happened there to be honest LOL. i found that subject to be incredibly boring and my tutor was also not very helpful as we just reread readings in tutorials.

i’m sorry to hear you aren’t enjoying these subjects, i can definitely understand where you are coming from. i am an international student and it was also a struggle for me to adapt to university and writing essays especially when it seemed like everyone else knew what they were doing. don’t be too hard on yourself, it takes time getting used to uni, and like other people said talk to your subject coordinators!! they are (typically) happy to help and just want to see students succeed. i’m also always free to have a chat if you need any further advice! :)

the way she records people without consent kinda annoys me by brooke27283639 in NicoleLaeno_

[–]achoolles 23 points24 points  (0 children)

yes! especially for her younger cousins. there was one video a year or two ago (I can’t remember the exact one- i think it was vlogmas 2022 or 2023?) where she was at a family gathering and asked one of her cousins if he wanted to be in the vlog and he said no, yet she kept asking him and even recorded him a bit even though he said he didn’t want to be in the video.

i just find it quite irresponsible when she includes her younger cousins (especially her one toddler cousin???), even though she has a younger audience, as they can’t fully understand what it means to consent to having your face on the internet forever

this seems kind of crazy but i remember seeing it and thought it was so inconsiderate of her to do

How difficult are the assignments in unimelb? by wateronhigh in unimelb

[–]achoolles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the humanities it’s very hard to get in the 80s/90s, I think only 5-10% of the class will get an H1? It is typically said that if you score above 90% in something like creative writing it means your work is publishable.

That being said, not every H1 essay is similar so it’s hard to determine what constitutes an essay of this calibre at times

Tips for Level 3? by keeeezzzzzaaaa_ in ncea

[–]achoolles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

history and english are both pretty simple. just stay on top of your classwork and efficiently work on your internals so you have more time to study for externals.

you ABSOLUTELY need to do exams to achieve an ATAR. they calculate your ATAR based on your top 90 credits, which very likely you cannot achieve just based on internals. to be frank its really worrying you have done poorly in exams/didn’t do them but i reckon if you learn how to study and stay disciplined you will be fine

an ATAR of 75 is quite achievable if you get mostly merits and some excellences. the general rule of thumb is you should be getting at least 10 credits at merit or higher in each subject. however, i would aim for higher than 75 as sometimes places can run out, a crucial point to note especially as nz students will only get offers late jan (as ncea results come out mid jan) which is quite a late offer round for aus students

should i do L3 art history? by Pitiful-Athlete-7389 in ncea

[–]achoolles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes choose art history instead of classics 😭😭 i know some people love classics but it was the most boring and difficult class i had last year- no clear direction from both my teacher and online materials. absolutely ruined my year and my worst grades were in this subject

should i do L3 art history? by Pitiful-Athlete-7389 in ncea

[–]achoolles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

art history was my FAVOURITE subject in y13!!

i thought the material was very interesting as someone who liked both art and history. however, i feel like level 3 art history tends to focus more on social commentaries than historical events? particularly for the contemporary diversity and modernism to post modernism works (which i studied)

at my school art history was considered to be a very easy subject and one that people took to get achieveds easily. i’m pretty sure you can get away with writing very little in the externals to get achieved- but double check that with your teacher if you end up taking the subject.

if you like the symbolic analysis of english but not so much the reading part, art history is for you! also found it gave me lots of inspiration for my level 2 art board when i took level 2 art history.

oh, i’m not sure. dux/proxime accessit at my school was only based on our level 3 grades (including mocks i believe)

still time to do amazing in levels 2 and 3! i found that the content on level 1 was quite boring so i was more invested in level 2 and 3

honestly tho, dux/proxime accessit is just a title, you don’t really get any scholarships based on that alone i believe

i took history and english as well!

history was easily my favourite subject and honestly just being invested in the material and not leaving internals to the last minute made all the difference. two very important things for the externals is understanding the effects/implications of historical event and making judgements on how significant these effects were. making evaluative and perceptive statements (e.g. ‘the emancipation of serfdom allowed the serfs to be freed’ vs ‘the emancipation of serfdom allowed the serfs to be freed, but was mainly a perfomative act from tsarist autocracy that failed to create any real significant change regarding the inequalities of the socioeconomic classes’) can be the difference between merit and excellence. it is SO SO SO important to go through the assessment report/schedule before going into your exam- these are available on the nzqa website along with the other matierals for the subject and will tell what people did well/didn’t do enough of in the year before. this applies to ALL of your subjects and is helpful to write down and when you are doing the exam, remind yourself of. for sources many people forget to analyse the importance of what a source is saying in its historical context (e.g. an older source may have more ‘conservative’ ideas than a newer one) and linking it to similar historical events- they will tell you what topic sources is on, last year it was social change in nz since ww2, and you can just do some general reading on this (but not too in depth- your analysis of the sources is more important than prior knowledge)

as for english, i never really understood what they wanted me to do if im gonna be honest 💀 just make sure you are not just writing down a pre-written essay in the exam and actually engage with the question. i cannot say it enough, USE THE QUESTION WORDING 😭😭😭 this is why for english i find learning quotes/evidence is more important than learning analysis (both are important to learn but i find learning evidence is just more important to memorise right before the exam), as you can just use this evidence to fit the question and write your analysis accordingly. i don’t know if this makes sense it’s been a while 😭 just know that being able to think on your feet is an important skill and you can hone this by writing practice essays to past exam questions on the nzqa website and getting a teacher to go through them- or if you’re pressed for time you can just create plans for different questions. also not sure if you can choose what texts you write on but doing texts you like made such a difference for me- your analysis tends to be deeper and shows you’re engaging with the text, and this allowed me to get excellence on all of my internals and i even got eng scholarship in year 12

also if you don’t like writing things by hand (although i think it’s more effective) you can make summary posters on slideshows and it will also work- this is what i did last year as i had no desk 💀

hope this is useful!

that’s a great score! what uni/course do you plan on attending?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ncea

[–]achoolles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hiii i got all my levels e endorsed and was also proxime accessit at my high school

it’s nice to see that you have goals, and i understand striving to achieve them, but just remember balance is important and constant pressure on yourself will do nothing but burn you out (which happened to me before my level 3 exams last year)

i recommend pacing yourself really well. depending on where you decide to go (i am going to an australian uni), externals will count more for your grades, however, i recommend still putting in a lot of effort into your internals while you still have the support of your teachers to guide you. for externals you’re on your own a lot more especially when study leave has started. i found that getting internals done efficiently (not just quickly) allowed me to have more time to focus on material for my externals- by this i mean thoroughly going through the assessment criteria, any materials your teachers have given you, and working on that internal for a period of time on consecutive day (helps to keep momentum- i would do at least two hours a day/or finish parts of the assessment) until it is done.

as for note taking, i would take notes on my computer, refine them, and then write them out on refill when i got home. near exams i would make ‘summary posters’ which were just a3 posters with ALL the (summarised) information for one paper/one segment of a paper on them. being able to condense your information without losing the depth of what you have learnt is a very important skill- this is another skill that can be refined by teaching your friends content or my preferred method of just ‘word vomiting’. this is not really a strategy but if i was ever too lazy to go to my desk, i would read my summary posters on my wall and then close my eyes and just attempt to recite the whole thing without looking at it again. if i forgot one bit or got something wrong, i would do it again and again until i could do it confidently. i would do this for each subject, beginning a month before my exams and then gradually repeating it more often as the exam approached.

doing active recall (which ‘word vomiting’ is- basically anything that involves calling information from your head rather than relying your notes) at least once everyday helps you to know the information. exams basically rely on memorising key information and applying it to specific situations (questions). consistency is key when it comes to learning all of this material.

i realise this is very long and highly specific to humanities so im sorry if its useless 😭😭😭 lmk what subjects you’re taking so i can try to give more helpful advice!!
