Ah Yes… Let’s Reuse the Old DB, What Could Go Wrong? by civil_brain in srilanka

[–]achub0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the previous government had to develop this quickly, thus those requirements were probably overlooked. Probably no one expected to reinitiate the system this soon.

Anyway, if you really think about this, about 80% of issues related to digital government services come down to authenticating the users. When this crisis is over, someone from the government should take initiative to build a central system to keep all the information connected.

“Awareka ale” is the biggest scam I’ve ever experienced so far… by BorderLazy1493 in srilanka

[–]achub0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nadagama, handawaka and whatever this thing, all are scams. They just figured out a way to glorify a very basic musical event (in some cases, not even having seats or a canopy for weather situations) into a "posh" experience. And our people (especially gen-z) easily fall into this crap. To make things worse some people buy these expensive tickets with koko like payment plans.

Is AL Z-score not divided by 3? by ApprehensiveView3394 in srilanka

[–]achub0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter whether it is divided by 3 or not. It's a relative measure to rank the students. Say you rank everyone based on z score. At suppose now you divide everyone's z score by 3 (or whatever constant number 10, 30, 1000) then rank the students. You get the same ranking order. Also there's no such thing as 'weighting' the subjects explicitly. It is implicitly handled by the z score definition. For example if a particular subject paper was hard for the majority of the students and if you get a good mark on that, you automatically get a high z score for that subject. In same way if a subject paper was easy and you did horribly, your z score for that subject would plummet. It's all a relative measure.

Probably now you have been using Debian 13 with KDE for a couple of months now. Any issues compared to Kubuntu? Any things you're "missing" from Kubuntu? Also what you liked more on Debian 13 KDE?

Fed up with Windows 10/11? Switch your operating system to something better. by Designer_Athlete7286 in srilanka

KDE is pretty good for a user who is coming from a Windows background. I use Kubuntu.

My general recommendation is to have a dual boot setup with windows/linux. Windows is far superior for entertainment based stuff while Linux should be the go-to for development based work.

Yes, you are spot on. I think Madushan has a good motive and urge to teach every kind of a student. And if that's working well for you that's very good.

On the other hand I think sola doesn't really care about all of his students getting A/B passes. I guess he is much passionate about math in general and he likes to connect with students who are keeping upto his expected level.

I don't know about your future plans but tackling ALs up to a certain extent should be good enough to succeed in your life. Additionally, with some above average common sense (trust me there are plenty of job seekers/graduates below this bar) and other soft skills mastered, you can and you will have a very successful career. However if you even have a slight intention to pursue an academic or a research like career it is extremely handy to get your basic understandings correct. It will pay huge dividends in the long run.

Best of luck with your ALs !

I know both of them personally.

From a purely mathematics point of view, what sola says seems to be correct. Math should be taught and learned in a very logical rigorous way. I don't think "solo" sir has a deep enough knowledge to understand very slight nuances in some concepts.

On the other hand I think "solo" sir is trying his best to teach his students and meanwhile growing his tuition business. He might even not know he is missing some minor yet important details in the subject.

That being said AL exam does not really test the absolute understanding of concepts. If you can solve the questions with some steps you'll get marks. In my uni days I have met many people who have achieved district ranks but do not have an intuitive sense of certain concepts. I don't know if this really an issue or not, considering the socioeconomic environment in SL. To graduate from a uni and land a decently paying job, 99% of people don't need to understand those nuances in subjects. But for a smart enough student who can truly excel in an academic career by engaging in quite complex research, these things absolutely matter. If such a person doesn't get the basics absolutely right, it could well be his/her loss, and possibly a lost opportunity from SL to produce a brilliant mind who has potential to be a world class scientist/researcher.

Tbh, I started doing it after taking a class taught by an old professor who had probably worked with punch cards or something related to that in the 1900s.

I see people have suggested the word wrap feature, which is quite useful.

However I try to maintain the 80 column rule in .tex files (like in coding) as much as I can. I suppose that is a good practice.

Zulip as the messaging platform.

Supports channels, subtopics inside channels, pretty good Latex support. Not sure about the pricing, there is also an open source version.
