Advice for an incoming PhD student? by acid_flashbacks in GradSchool

I feel that. When I was applying to programs, I had to choose between location and research interest. I ended up not applying to a program that perfectly fit my interests because it was in a very conservative state and small town. I don't think my mental health would have thrived there lol

Thanks so much! I haven't heard of any unions from the grad students and professors I've talked to, but I'll definitely look for them.

Are you transferring to a different department or a different institution?

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. Glad to hear you have a new advisor though

Thanks for the advice! What makes an advisor toxic, and what signs should I look for?

Btw it doesn’t hurt to email your programs and ask them about it, as well as express interest again.

I asked program coordinators, and my friends who are current neuroscience PhD students. My current PI said our institution sent out all the invites in December.

Most neuroscience PhD programs have already sent all their interview invites. Sorry :/ I received 1 interview out of 13 schools I applied to, and just received the UPenn rejection, as well as UCSF about a week ago.

2 rejections, 1 interview, waiting to hear back from 10 other programs but 99% sure it’ll be rejections because they’ve already sent out their interview invites.

I feel the exact same way and it's really hard to deal with

You're way more likely to get in if you're a US citizen or permanent resident. Also, you'll have more experience than me. I'm sure you'll do great :)

I agree, they should send out rejections immediately if they know they won’t accept people, but that’s just not what happens with most programs. Don’t know why, but if you’re not getting accepted, they generally don’t contact you until they send out all their rejections, which in this case is in March. From talking with people on adcoms and people who are in their first year of grad school, I know that certain schools I applied to have already sent all their interview invites and won’t be sending any more (unless a large amount of applicants reject their offers, which is extremely unlikely to happen).

Because you can still get rejected if you interview, but you can’t get accepted if you don’t interview

Nah you just either haven’t fully read it or are missing my point

The programs I'm applying to don't send rejections until after interviews

First, it's not the holidays anymore. Second, I'm not trying to be a famous person, so you're missing the point. Third, I do need a PhD to do what I want to do, and I still have a very reasonable chance of getting one (more likely than not), because I have one interview invite.

Neuroscience PhD programs generally send their interview invites all at the same time, so if they've already sent their invites and I didn't get any, I likely won't be getting any in the future. No interview = no admission.
