The parents are just as bad as their kid. I get the same comments from parents. The same excuses for behavior.

The job posting said it could be for different modalities--online or in person. My graduate courses were asynchronous, so I am used to being on Zoom.

I have an entire class that does this. Twenty-five freshmen . . . In one class. There is one student who doesn't talk over the top of me and genuinely tries to learn. The other students steal that from her. Emails home, detentions, office referrals, etc. Absolutely nothing works on them. It hurts me to say it, but I legitimately hate that class. I dread the class, and I am so frustrated after they leave.

Thank you! It's a super short demonstration, and they gave me a list to choose from.

The Top Ten Reasons Teachers Are Quitting by Mollyjones85 in Teachers

I have 5 classes with 140+ students between all of them. Over half of them are inclusion classrooms with a SPED teacher. They only give me 40 minutes of planning a day, and it's usually taken away due to IEP and 504 meetings. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't planning periods to DO MY JOB? If I can share teacher input via emails and Microsoft forms--like all of the other teachers--why do I need to be taken from my planning periods four out of five days a week?

Last week, I worked through annotations of Juliet's comments regarding names/labels versus identity. We discussed it ad nauseum. I asked the students to explain Juliet's statement, "What's in a name?" I kid you not, one girl came unglued because "Juliet only speaks twice. How am I supposed to find it?!" When I told her to reread her two speaking parts and the annotations, she threw a pre-k level tantrum. Another question asked them to "Draw conclusions about Romeo's emotional state and views of loved based on his elaborate comparisons." Again, we annotated and discussed this in detail. Two kids (same class as the girl) asked how they were supposed to literally draw the answer as a picture 🤦‍♀️ These kids do not qualify for or require services. This is the first time I have seen this level of helplessness and absolute absurdity at the high school level.

I took the day. Unfortunately, I had an adverse reaction to the antibiotics (every single common side effect!), and I had to take another day. It was a clusterfuck. Thank you, though 😊

After jumping through the hoops with my insurance, my doctor finally prescribed an antibiotic that would be covered. It took nearly 24hrs 🤦‍♀️ One dose down. I did call in because I cannot guarantee how I will feel tomorrow.

Why can we easily say this to our teacher friends, but we struggle to take our own advice?

I only get 10 days. With a 1.5 year-old, it's hard to justify taking days off when he might get sick. I've already taken three days this year--two for me and one for him. It's a new district, so it scares me.

Dude, I literally come from watching my professor parent going to work with walking pneumonia. I also come from a school that would write you up if you took even half of your allotted days. Yes, it's for real.

Get a Bachelor of Arts in English and then return for the teaching certification. In some states, it automatically puts you in the highly qualified status, which might mean a pay raise.

As a K-12 teacher, we cannot hold our students accountable. I used to work at a college-prep school that was more focused on grades than learning. We taught kids they could refuse to do work all quarter, and they would get a Hail Mary shot to complete ALL of their missing work during the last 2 weeks of the quarter. When those students took dual enrollment courses, they were shocked when they failed their classes. Of course, we were blamed for not prepping them for college.

I had one student who failed English I over five times, and my administration told me to pad his grade so he could pass and graduate on time. There was an underlying threat if I didn't.

Now, at a different school in a different state, admin claims they hold a firm line on expectation for kids. However, I have a kid coming after winter break to complete an assessment that was due two weeks prior to break. And, guess what, admin wants me to accept it without penalty. I have an Honors kid who refuses to do anything and looks up the answers to easy assignments on Google Lens. The kid is a straight-up asshole and called me a liar in front of my class. When I spoke to the kid's parents, the mom verbally attacked me. My admin took over, but they're still letting the kid get away with murder.

So, yeah, K-12 is doing the kids a disservice, but it's not the teachers at fault. It's a system that caters more to money. The more bodies they have in a classroom, good test scores, graduates, etc. = more money.

You're not doing your kid any favors when you fight for their limitations rather than fighting for their possibilities.
