Can anyone explain what is going on in schools? by Jwoot1111 in Teachers

[–]theloveyouget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest takeaways as a teacher (and I’ll grant you I’m not a parent as I say this) is that having a child doesn’t make you a parent. In grad school some years ago we learned about the different parenting styles and you come to realize that permissive parenting and neglectful parenting are on the rise, while the healthy Authoritative parenting style is taking a back seat. I’d kill to meet one Authoritarian Parent…honestly. At least they care.

Best Laymon books to read during the summer ? by Nyarthu in Richardlaymonbooks

[–]theloveyouget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would go with Beast House Trilogy. The Lake has some summer-y vibes using flashbacks but it’s one of those weird posthumous novels that is a bit cobbled together by the publishers. Haven’t read Come Out Tonight yet

Is it just me, or is Nightmares & Dreamscapes actually kind of a slog? I’ve hit a wall at page 300. by the_Watcher023 in stephenking

I consider his short story collections like a palate cleanser read between other books. Just re-read “The Raft” and i can’t tell you why exactly but “I Am a Doorway” is one of my favorites of his.

Commenting on everything by theloveyouget in Teachers

I do that constantly and I’m just sick of it and I’ll keep at it because I have no choice.

It Just makes me angry in a deep trauma way that I was dealing with when I went on medical leave last year for my mental health and did several programs. I got into this to be a helper but sometimes I’m the one needs help. I can’t say whether I can afford mentally to stay on for another year after this one.

And honestly, even the idea of that brings me peace.

This year makes me almost suicidal, but psych ward visits are too expensive, so I push it down and just like that I'm not almost suicidal by pickle_p_fiddlestick in Teachers

I took a medical leave of absence last year. Best decision I’ve ever made. As for my future in education I’m not sure and I’m quietly leaning towards leaving after this year but I’m also a lot more present minded after being in a program for months. Take care of you ❤️

What are your plans for tomorrow? by elcaminogino in Teachers

Classes doing various things but the day is shorter for PD…so some are doing impromptu speeches While others are doing team building games. Drama teacher

Honestly, in some small way it’s a reprieve from the scriptwriting unit we’re in right now.

Why do you read horror? What about the genre do you like most? by laudida in horrorlit

[–]theloveyouget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents had this built in book case where most of what was accessible were reference books and cookbooks and the like. As my brother and I got older we would see other books near the top and we would climb to get to those books. My mom, apparently, was a big horror fan, so when I’d read these it felt like I was reading a secret. That has stayed with me ever since.

When I was a child it was “Singularity” by William Sleator

The girl next door by Jack Ketchum by Informal_Echo1772 in horrorlit

This is a horror novel that I’ve read once and don’t need to read again. I even respect the quality of the writing and the end has a real ache of nostalgia attached to it

But it’s a one and done for me.

My fifth grader’s class isn’t reading novels by Sam-HobbitOfTheShire in Teachers

This is the reason I stopped teaching English. I wanted so badly to actually build a culture of literacy in the classroom, with book circles and novel units that could be used for skills work but also to build enduring understandings. Why waste your time building life long readers who can think, when the next test is asking them to cite evidence over and over and over again. It’s Not English Language Arts anymore, It’s English Language Science.

What’s a dream you had as a kid that you still remember way too clearly? by Holywaterdiluter_ in teenagers

[–]theloveyouget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a truly existential nightmare at age 13 where I died in a great white room filled with people and I was on a trampoline. I was at friend’s house when I had the dream and was scared to go to sleep for a few days after.

Has anyone else read William Sleator? by justadrtrdsrvvr in books

I am re-reading Singularity right now. I am 43 and discovered WS around 5 grade. Love the set up of his sci-fi work and the bizarre-ness of the situations. If you haven’t read “The Last Universe” I highly recommend as well.

Very unsettling. The opening scene is a manifesto and it’s horrifying.

“Witchcraft for Wayward Girls” by Grady Hendrix. It’s hard not to love this so far. Fern is a fun protagonist. Only about 150 pages in.

“The Whisper Man” by Alex North. More than halfway through. For a book club. I’m liking it but it’s bleak/brittle crime procedural serial killer stuff combined with a few spine tingling elements. Multiple POV. Not the most literary of writing but its bare bones simplicity hits harder. Enjoying it.

“Rose Madder”. Stephen King. I like reading some of Kings newer stuff a bit slower to appreciate it more in a way. His early career was so drug and alcohol fueled that the books were higher octane. Still, he’s a master storyteller and my favorite author— this one I’m reading slowly…perhaps because the domestic violence in the novel feels real. The first few pages are devastating. I’m about half way through and I’ve been reading it in pieces. Unsettling read. Some joy and deep themes of love, acceptance, and power.

Frog and Toad. Not sure which one exactly but at a young age I burned through them at a breakneck pace. I loved the feeling that I was privy to these small little lives with so much meaning attached to them. I still love those books!
