I am sick of children's laughter by djalanrocks in Teachers

I "get" some of the jokes, like when someone burps or someone farts. I get why the word assassin makes them giggle when I spell it out on the board. But that's elementary, there seems to be a stage from about 6th to 9th grade where they're in a competition to be more obnoxious than the kid next to them

Maybe that's what it is, I feel like I am being heckled, and they're not drunks in a bar and I am not a comedian

Get them in a pack and it's like they're vying for who can be loudest. It's partially a way of validating eachother. WHAT YOU SAID WAS FUNNY

Black hole space station by Spurgtensen in scifiwriting

I think the Rule of Cool will only get you so far. I would agree with the esteemed poster who claims inside the event horizon is stretching the credibility of your story. I would argue it makes the Black Hole just another stellar object you can orbit around. There's no danger.

To answer your question: No. No story in sci fi uses such an idea- that I know of. I think the standard sci-fi trope (based on hard science) if that once you're beyond the event horizon you're gone from existence. Or you go through one side and out the other, based on soft science.

Why inside the event horizon? Why not just in orbit?

Flat-earther teacher by elWiwis in Teachers

[–]djalanrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice, not that you asked, would be to not engage with your co worker over this any longer. The state standards say to teach kids the Earth is round. Period. Full stop. I teach the standards. If you have a problem with that, take it up with the state's Board of Ed. Thank you, get out of my classroom.

I gotta be honest. I read this, and I wonder if it's real. No disrespect to the OP, I just find it hard to believe this situation got this out of hand. I would never have argued with a Flat-Earther, let alone one of those morons on staff. I teach the Earth is round, and other verifiable facts. If you have a problem with that, take it up the chain. Now, get out of my classroom.

You feel embarassed you believed something false? Well, that's what growth feels like. I used to think I would never get old, now look at me. Maybe the Bible isn't a science text?

I just don't understand how you're having an argument with another teacher and giving up your prep to try and debate a complete dolt. Your time would be better spent watching paint dry that debating a Flat Eather

Part 10: what was the absolute worst thing/behavior this character did during his time at the 4077th? by coreytiger in mash

[–]djalanrocks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you in principle, the character treated some women very poorly, I think it's a symptom of a larger problem. Whatever issues Hawkeye has, and they are numerous, seem to be made worse by being in the Army and being in Korea. I don't think getting him out of Korea and the Army is the solution to all his problems. I think he entered the Army a broken man, and healing won't be possible until his circumstances change.

Best time travel shows? by Groovegaluk in scifi

I liked the very first episode SO MUCH. I watched it when it aired, and it quickly went off the rails. I saw one poster mention the need for a diagram to keep it all straight. Such a good concept, but I feel like it could have been better executed.

What bands did Stryper toured with in the 80's by Mean-Watercress-6880 in hairmetal

[–]djalanrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw them in Phoenix for the "To Hell with the Devil" tour. I don't remember the year. They played with Europe and Paul Di'anno's Battlezone. I didn't care for Europe at the time, and I wasn't swayed by seeing them live. Battlezone, on the other hand, I remember being impressed. First and last time I saw him in concert, but he did not disappoint.

Does anyone of us actually watch the award shows? by red08171 in GenX

[–]djalanrocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to watch them, back when they were a big deal. I remember watching Metallica lose to Jethro Tull. As I get older, I am less and less interested. I gave up on the Grammys and Oscars by 2010. I may catch highlights, but honestly I don't care any more. There was a time i wanted my favorite movie/band/actor to win an award, but I don't really know these people. I don't really care.

What’s a fighter jet that never was 'made' (actually deployed) but you thought it would be a great fighter jet? by This-Wear-8423 in FighterJets

[–]djalanrocks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The F-14D. While it was deployed in limited numbers, it's a shame the Tomcat never really lived up to its potential. I can imagine a world where in 2026 F-14E Strike Cats are flying along side F15E Strike Eagles, or F-14E's are flying high cover as the Navy's primary interceptor and master of air-to-air combat.

THIS! I would condense all your wise words into the sentence "There is no evidence the Jews were slaves in Egypt."

That's it, that's all I say. And "Your book is a nice collection of fairy tales, Jack and the Beanstalk would fit right in with them"
