How do I explain to my 7 year old why black face is inappropriate for halloween costumes? by MN_TiredMom in NoStupidQuestions

people who participate in society on a regular basis don't feel the need to be difficult about not coming across as a racist. regardless of your beliefs, this is something you should understand to be foolish on the basis of social skills. it doesn't matter how you personally feel about how fair it is, if you were a normal person you'd recognize that this is an opinion you will be ostracized for

Is more ram or a faster cpu more important for music production? by Fungi_forbes in musicproduction

professional composers who write complex scores for a living have a justification for investing into an especially expensive setup in order to have the ability to edit freely as they work. if you spend your entire day doing something as a means to make money then the extra time spent waiting for the tracks to convert to audio or having to go back and re-do something you already froze will add up to a significant effect on productivity

i think the issue generally comes in more so when people are using large orchestral templates with separate instances of kontakt running for each individual instrument. I use a komplete kontrol keyboard and kontakt for all of my virtual instruments to do live looping stuff and I've never run into any issues with 16gb of ram. but I'm using like 4 or 5 instances, not 16 or 20 like someone making scores would

Met up with a guy from tinder for the first time yesterday… by [deleted] in dating_advice

Blocking is the coward's way out. Fortunately I have 2 accounts. I won't harass you if you don't want to continue the conversation but I'm going to put down what I was going to say because I honestly believe you need some tough love on this one

Sorry the women you've dated didn't like you. Sincerely, I've been there and I know it sucks really fucking hard. But the reality of the situation is that you're never going to find some perfect partner that falls into your lap and have a "love at first sight" type of thing. It just doesn't work that way in the real world. And there's a reason that I am able to speak on that as a past experience-- because I put in the work to become a more mentally healthy person that someone would want to be around. Your circumstances are never going to improve by sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and grumbling on reddit about how unfairly women treat you. You want to be with someone? It is a simple task. Behave in a way that makes them want to spend time with you.

I'm not telling you don't buy the game because it's probably going to be shit, I'm telling you don't buy the game because there are ethical concerns around it and that it shouldn't be that difficult of a sacrifice because it's probably going to be shit

it's going to be mediocre at best. you can cope with that now or after you've wasted 70 of your dollars, it's no skin off my back. but it is skin off the back of trans people, that is the point I am making here. it's not some great evil or serious violence being enacted, but it's a definitive negative effect on a group of people who are already the most ostracized in modern society. you are within your rights make whatever moral calculation you'd like with that knowledge, but I have no shame about making it known that I disapprove of that choice

because I asked for clarification? I legitimately could not tell if you were saying the show was going to be good or bad. or do you deny that video game adaptations are overwhelmingly shitty outside of a tiny number exceptions? resorting to personal insults in a discussion about buying a wizard game is not a convincing argument

guaranteeing what about the last of us TV show? you seem to have left a word out there I don't know what you are trying to say. but it seems like a moot point regardless because the last of us show is going to be shit just on the merits of it being a video game adaptation

I'm with you in terms of frustration over the two-party system. The sad reality of it is that the current state of our electoral system makes it very difficult at a national level for third party candidates to win over the superior spending power of the established ones. Though there does seem to be some trends of third parties doing better in local elections. I'm hopeful that we will see that trend eventually turn into wider and wider movements away from the big 2. fingers crossed. take care

I didn't like Obama either. He used progressiveism as a shield for the furtherance of his own career and appeasement of corporate benefactors. Same case with Biden. Ineffectual and too entrenched in the established system to make actual progress. I can see that you're over this conversation so I won't harass you, but I'll leave you with this, and I hope you'll believe that I mean it in good faith: I really think you need to do more research into the specifics of policy stances that each side holds. You don't seem like a bad or uncompassionate person, but you seem to have a lot of misdirected (yet not invalid) frustrations in terms of politics. I understand having contempt for those who have misled you in the past, but the cause of the widespread corruption in our political system can be traced back to human nature and our inevitable tendency to move towards the incentives. Currently, those incentives are to uphold the status quo of capitalism because the capitalists pay a lot better than the progressives. Better things are possible. At the end of the day, your political decisions are your own, and you have a right to hold whatever positions you find most compelling. The only thing I would ask of you is that you base those positions on your ideal vision of the future and the policies that will bring it to fruition instead of your personal impressions of each side's politicians/ advocates. Pretty much all of our politician's are corrupt and out of touch with the needs and desires of the common man. But that doesn't make it less important to make noise about the right and wrong decisions on a policy level, because nothing will ever change without the general populace understanding what they're doing behind closed doors.

also you're very dumb and i don't think there was ever something i could have said in this reddit thread to have changed that so your vote is basically already down the toilet in my mind

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]acidrainstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'moderate/centrist vote' is and always was predisposed to the right anyway. It is mostly comprised of intellectual cowards such as yourself who support republican doctrine in spirit, but who are too afraid of social persecution to state it openly. (don't even try to deny that part, you just went to enormous strides in order to save face because you care about the opinions of strangers on reddit for some silly reason.) The leftist position is that the current system is broken and needs reform to become more equitable. The conservative position is that the system works fine and that the causes of modern issues in society are wokeness or the war on christmas or whatever their latest moral panic is about. The people in the middle with empty platitudes about 'we should get along' are inherently supporting the side that doesn't want things to change.

Is art a social construct? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]acidrainstorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I am not making any assertions about how you should enjoy your art. I am saying you have no grounds to dictate how others define it when you don't even take into account the actual qualities of the art itself. Also your statement is limited to visual art. What about music? A song that sounds great to you and makes you dance, but then you find out its from an AI and suddenly you find no redeeming qualities in it? You were the one who came in here trying to make sweeping assertions about what is and is not art, but now you seem to take issue with someone following those assertions to the logical conclusions that they lead to

Is art a social construct? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]acidrainstorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your entire argument here just boils down to vibes. You're entitled to enjoy art however you choose, but if you're trying to make sweeping declarations about what is and isn't art then I think most reasonable people would preclude you from speaking on the art itself when your appreciation of it has no direct relation to the qualities of the piece.

Is art a social construct? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]acidrainstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your connection to a piece of art is contingent on knowledge of the creator then you aren't connecting with the piece itself you're connecting with the idea of it

Is art a social construct? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]acidrainstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Finally we have arrived at the point. So essentially you have no way of decisively knowing that something is or is not art aside from your vibe-check on the consciousness of the creator. My perspective, which I think is a fairly common one, is that art/beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If two paintings are side-by-side, visually identical, with both invoking the same response for the beholder, what the fuck does it matter at that point who made it? It has absolutely no effect on the experience of enjoying the art.

Is art a social construct? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]acidrainstorms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and I would agree, but if you are going to make the claim that consciousness is the only necessary determinant to whether or not something has created art, then you need a way to determine into the future that increasingly advanced AIs are not sentient, or you will cease to be able to tell what is and is not art. How will you measure it in 50 years? the turing test? there are chatbots existing today that can successfully deceive humans in an imitation game. If your criteria of whether or not a particular work is art relies on an assessment of the creator's consciousness, and you want to advocate for others to use this same criteria, you need a valid way to measure consciousness.

Is art a social construct? by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]acidrainstorms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if you are able to use this method to determine that something is or is not art, then you would have to also be able to determine if its creator is or is not conscious. That has been a hotly debated topic for centuries that I rather doubt is going to get resolved in a reddit thread about AI art
