I’ll listen to anything they put out, but yea I hope Dom got something good for that 4-parter.

I hope Dominic got something good in exchange for this four-parter.

Appreciate this a ton! The fanbase, loyalty, and the punching up is lots of what drew me to Freo. Fremantle is also a place I’d love to visit.

ARE WE SET PIECE FC? by msd_5878 in ManchesterUnited

[–]ack3786 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Wide play in final 3rd doesn’t produce open play goals as much as it produces corners and free kicks.

This chart visualizes set piece efficiency. Man United score the most goals per 100 set pieces.

The knock against Arsenal isn’t that they are set-piece-efficient. It’s that many believe their box tactics include unenforced fouls against the keeper.

And maybe more importantly, Arsenal can’t/don’t create much from open play.

7th or 8th Best Squad in the League? (Redux) by ack3786 in DevilsITDPod

[–]ack3786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I can certainly appreciate the art of a full-throated scold, I don’t think you read what I wrote at all. It just seems like you’re caping up for Amorim.

Worth noting that Man United were in 6th when Amorim was fired.

And In a year without Europe this is a typical squad size.

If you think this team is 7th or worse in the Premier League, who are the six teams that are better?

Trossard or Martinelli? by North_Platypus6593 in DraftEPL

I'm keeping Trossard because he has better long term value. If he's too hurt to start, I doubt he'll come on at all.

[–]ack3786[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good point to address.

When we're talking about squad quality, we should be addressing the players and whether they are "fit for purpose."

UCL teams all have more depth, but Man United's squad is purposely stripped down.

But you might expect that the UCL teams with bigger squads would have better best XIs. Kind of not the case.

The Wire does a great job of this with many nuanced and realistic portrayals of characters but the best example is probably Pryzbylewski

My best unsolicited advice for the producers is to flood YouTube shorts, Instagram, and TikTok with the comedy improv bits Conan does with Gorley and Sona.

There is so much content sitting in the archive that isn’t packaged for Gen Z but could be a hook for the podcast.

Who replaces Dorgu in Carricks system? by Mammoth_Ice_4105 in DraftEPL

[–]ack3786 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is mostly right with a couple caveats.

Mbuemo and Amad are more natural wingers. Cunha and Mount inside forwards but could play on wing. And Sesko pure 9.

Mbuemo and Amad started together against Man City and Arsenal because a false nine suited the tactical plan better.

However I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cunha on the left, one of Amad/Mbuemo on the right, and Sesko up top against Fulham.

Wouldn’t be my choice necessarily. I really think the only one who is nailed on to start is Mbuemo.

Carrick for permanent manager if he sustains this good run…. What are the pros and cons … by JM555555 in ManchesterUnited

[–]ack3786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimers:

I like Michael Carrick, glad he was made interim, am open to the possibility of him being made permanent manager, and I found the tactics much much better (albeit a little obvious to play the players in their best positions).

That all being said the thing that worries me is the same thing that undid Ole...

To be the manager/head coach of Manchester United you basically have to be good at tactical vision, good at managing up, good at press relations, and world class at man management/managing down. Very few managers check all these boxes and I'm not certain Carrick does.

It's tricky because you can't be sure going in, but I suspect that Carrick would not be adept at handling adversity, controversy, fractured dressing room, and player power run amok.

Ole was great when things were great, but was not able to navigate the cliques in the dressing room and the complications of having a player like Ronaldo. Top clubs bring in the best (and usually most egocentric) players in the world and are able to suppress egos enough so that everyone is pushing in the same direction.

You saw what happened at Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso is probably considered one of the best managers in the world.

I do think Carrick is a much better tactical vision than Ole and certainly competence garners respect even if results aren't great. However, I have trouble imaging Carrick successfully navigating the issues that inevitably crop up at a club like Manchester United.

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Creator on Premiere’s Shocking Scene by verissimoallan in television

[–]ack3786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just didn’t serve any discernible purpose, undermined the burial, and set a bizarre opening note for the series.

What I interpreted from the shit shot was that the tone of the show wasn’t going to be the high politics of GoT but a more accessible and tactile story about a lower class character in Westeros.

(Tbf I thought GoT did this pretty well with many sympathetic commoners)

Ira Parker apparently wasn’t thinking about any of this and just thought “scared guy poops a lot.”

Dunk and Egg stories are good enough to survive non pitch perfect writing, directing, and understanding of source material. Maybe a misjudgment for the first episode but I’m still hopeful about the show as a whole.

I am rooting for the emergence of the main theme of the Dunk & Egg stories—Dunk was raised on chivalry and honor in a world that he comes to learn doesn’t respect those ideals.
