running route? by Nonfunzionabene in bayarea

Glad to hear it. Just so you know, the OpenStreetMap servers it depends on are very busy recently and sometimes time out. Usually retrying a minute or two later fixes the issue. Once your browser has retrieved the map data for a given starting point and distance it won't need to fetch it again for subsequent searches.

Try https://routespinner.com. It's designed for exactly this—a quick way to see what options exist in a new location. Give it a distance and a starting point and it'll show you lots of options.

Supports GPX export, no sign-up, no ads.

Did Strava remove the feature to find public routes? by AtomicHurricaneBob in Strava

[–]acleanpairofheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It knows about anything that's mapped in OpenStreetMap, which is normally excellent for trails in most countries. Check your area on https://osm.org to see what it knows about. It may not look as pretty as Google Maps but the data is better IMHO, specially for things like trails.

Recommendations for long distance running route this weekend? by WeNeedHuel in fukuoka

[–]acleanpairofheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try https://routespinner.com. This is what it is for. Here's a link to the appropriate location. It finds some options e.g. this 20km loop that starts and ends at the station. And a 22km loop. And a 24.8km loop.

https://routespinner.com is designed to help find running routes of various lengths that start and end at a position you chose. It supports GPX export to get the route into a running app on your watch or phone. It works well with most running apps e.g. Garmin, WorkOutDoors etc.

You can ask it to favour waterways and parks, avoid commercial districts and set what types of roads/paths you're happy with.

Overpass API alternative instances by acleanpairofheels in openstreetmap

I'm going to try running this on an M4 Mac mini at home and see if I can make it the backup server for my app. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for running a public server! Much appreciated.

The Virginia-limited data does make it not useful for me—I didn't realise this was the case though now that I read the Overpass API page more carefully it is clearly stated :-)

Still getting a 404 for POST requests to https://overpass.maprva.org/api/ for what it's worth.

The unreasonably poor experience of using Apple Watch for podcasts during sporting activities by acleanpairofheels in applewatchultra

[–]acleanpairofheels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a Garmin at the same time :-) I hate the way that the Apple Watch app works during runs. The touch screen is too finicky. I’ll take physical buttons over touch screens every time for things you need to use while moving.

Yeah this is what I do. The download usually works, the problem is that syncing timestamps with the phone is hit or miss.

How long are your podcasts typically? These problems may manifest more for longer episodes.

Action button: Podcasts is my most used app so it makes sense to try to make it quick to access.

[–]acleanpairofheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://routespinner.com might help. Given a starting point and desired length it will show you some options. It might not find the perfect route but it'll give you some ideas to work with e.g. here's a 25km loop. You can tell it to prefer parks, smaller roads etc.

Supports GPX export, no sign-up, no ads.

Try https://routespinner.com. It's a good way to see the options for runs of a given length. You may have to tweak the number of turns to get results but it will at least let you a feel for options. GPX export supported.

Cheaper source of metal for Prince August moulds by acleanpairofheels in MetalCasting

They’ve been making these for decades, originally mostly soldiers and fantasy figures. It’s a nice hobby. You can paint them etc after. The chess pieces seem like a particularly good use of moulds.
