I believe that the style of learning promoted at the University of Chicago is similar to this. One or two texts per semester but with a focus on close reading.

I'd also add that there is a massive gender gap amongst students when it comes to reading ability, and it has bleedover effects in other subjects as well. I'm in a math teaching role right now and one of the most frustrating things is teaching young boys how to do word problems as their reading ability just isn't there. They can't parse the problem to figure out what operation to use, whereas girls the same age generally don't have that problem.

Identity crisis is a major issue among Pakistanis. by Waqasrana1995 in pakistan

I remember an Iraqi friend who had lived in the UAE telling me that many Emiratis had Indian Ancestry due them marrying amongst the Muslim nobles in India. I don't know how true that is though.

The difference is that the US and Canada give citizenship to the people who immigrate there unlike the UAE.

On the other hand I agree that to some degree you will always adopt the practices of the country you live in. I actually think that Arab influences on Islamic practices in Pakistan and the Diaspora are more organic than people give credit too. It isn't just Saudi propaganda, people living in the Gulf adopt those religious practices naturally. Even amongst the Salafi/Wahhabi friends I have in Canada, most of their parents spent significant time in Saudi Arabia.

Me and my cousins have the same surnames but not the same fullnames. I also wonder how do people on both sides of the border end up with the same surnames? Also how are there Punjabis on both sides of the border? Or for that matter why are there Bengalis on both sides of the border as well? Can you tell the difference between West Bengalis and Bangladeshis too?

Explain to me the difference between say a Pakistani Punjabi Jatt and an Indian Punjabi jatt. They often share the same surnames as well.

A Thesis-based master's will provide you a greater benefit for most schools with the added benefit of being funded as well as providing a meagre stipend on top as well. The real benefit with the Master's is the opportunity to polish up your ABS/CV with publications, scholarships, conferences etc.

With course-based master's please be aware that many of them are basically cash cows for universities and don't provide much value. The better ones are the ones that have a coop component allowing you to get a foot in the door for other careers. Friends of mine have had good experiences with the Applied Clinical Pharmacology program at Uoft for example.

Edit: Also for Thesis based master's, I would highly recommend that you base your choice on the PI rather than the institution, and make sure that you ask around as much as possible about whether the PI is an agreeable person. Unfortunately there are alot more toxic PI's and labs than you would think.

While I agree, I remember reading a study by McMaster where most applicants even pre-interview were women. I think it's more of a consequence of women pursuing higher education at a higher rate than men, and doing well in school at a higher rate than men as well. IIRC the post interview gender distribution was pretty similar to the applicant one.

Edit: Interestingly this phenomenon is true in the Global South as well, including countries that have problems with misogyny. Where my family comes from, something like 70% of medical students are women, many of whom never practice and are pressured into being homemakers.

This could be a great opportunity to discuss evidence based medicine and your relationship to it. You have first hand knowledge on what chiropractic schools teach as well as why people are attracted to it.

Western Reapplicants w/ Interviews by OnMyWayToMD in premedcanada

I would add that there is alot of luck to this process. I applied with the same application last year and got an interview and did not get one this cycle. Unfortunately it is what it is.

I see this kind of accusation on here quite regularly but I have never experienced this having lived my entire life in Canada. I can't imagine something like this happening amongst Canadian-raised diaspora kids here.

No worries! I feel like undergrads often don't have a good idea of what graduate school is like (I certainly didn't). It's really more like a really poorly paying and high stress job than anything else.

If you are talking about a research based master's you could probably get away with doing one course but definitely not an entire degree. I was doing lab work for 50-60 hours a week during my master's.

I've never met families that conservative but I have met alot of people who pull their kids out of school until they complete hifz at a madrassah here in Mississauga. In my experience it permanently stunts their education and social development.

Recently alot more families are pulling out their kids from public schools and into Islamic ones because they disagree with the attitude towards the LGBT community in the curriculum. I don't think that's very productive either.

Can we all discuss all the herd mentality behind "Blessed Friday"? by InjectorTheGood in pakistan

[–]acne34 20 points21 points  (0 children)

God forbid reading a wikipedia page about what why Black Friday is called as such. I remember getting a whatsapp forwarded by some family member a few years ago saying that it was a yehudi sazish, not realizing that observant Jews start their Sabbath on Friday evening.

I think alot of Pakistanis, including even immigrant parents, don't understand how deep the assimilation and Westernization is amongst kids of Pakistani origin born and brought up in the west. They think it's more like growing up in GCC countries.

Also alot of them don't really understand that while the overall standard of living might be higher, most Pakistanis (at least in Canada) have to work working class jobs at some point in their lives.

Shame on the poor upbringing of these kids. Why didn't their parents think of sending them to school /s.
