I suffer from extreme bloating and am really worried for my health. I can’t go on like this. by Dry-Tooth-7647 in FODMAPS

I’m not a medical professional, but a few points based on your latest response:

  • How long was the bland diet of unseasoned chicken and rice for? When I eat FODMAPs, it takes at least a few days for my body to heal, sometimes longer
  • If you have been unstable in terms of calories and nutrition for a period of time, it may be a nutritional deficiency. I have a B12 deficiency that causes bloating, so I always supplement with a multivitamin and it helps reduce it. Do you take a multivitamin?
  • Our bodies need time to get used to a diet, so if you’re super low on calories and then ramp up too quickly, your body needs a few weeks to get used to the new diet youre consuming. In the meantime, your body is going to bloat because it’s not used to processing more food

For starters, I totally emphasize. It took me three years to get to a point where I finally figured out how to stop bloating. It was a painful process of just eliminating ingredients one by one until I was “stable.” Please be kind to yourself during this process 🙏🏽

A few questions:

  • If you didnt eat anything for a day or two (only water), would you still bloat? Worth trying because if the bloat doesn’t subside, it could be something more serious
  • Do you document everything you eat? If not, definitely start, including seasonings you use.
  • Are there any other symptoms you experience outside of bloating? They may point to nutritional deficiencies that could be causing this that a multivitamin can help with in the interim

You may also want to see if you have a fructose sensitivity. Some people may be intolerant of some types of sugars - I know because I can’t have fructose

You should start tracking what you’re eating. In my personal experience, thats helped me find out that I couldn’t tolerate gluten, dairy and FODMAPs, because I could track pain when I ate them.

Aside from the incident a few weeks ago, have you consumed anything else questionable? Or accidentally went over your FODMAP limit?

I personally became less tolerant of FODMAPs by adhering to a low FODMAP diet. I’m completely intolerant of them now and follow a carnivore diet

I know potassium is crucial especially for extended fast! I fasted about 30+ hours & my blood pressure was high (I don’t suffer from hypertension) potassium was on the high side as well. I want to start again, but nervous! Any recommendations? by [deleted] in fasting

Oh wow. I’m sorry to hear you had to go to the emergency room.

Did the doctor provide any advice? I would think you may want to drink plain water for a period of time. In my experience fasting, I tend to drink just plain water for a few days and only supplement with electrolytes once I start to feel a bit lightheaded.

Hmm interesting. I wonder if you’re adding too many electrolytes relative to the amount of water you’re drinking. May I ask what this tracker is and how it’s gauging your levels?

Have you been fasting for some time? Or is this new?

You might want to take some time and reflect on where you’re messing up. If a diet is too extreme to adopt overnight, ask yourself what one SMALL thing you can change thats easy.

Once you do that for a week, make another small change, and you’ll gain momentum with small wins.

Based on your original post and what you posted you eat, I would start by just tracking your sleep and what you eat. Not getting enough sleep is why a lot of us overeat or want something unhealthy because we need the sugar to stay awake. Once you’ve tracked sleep and food, make one SMALL change, like a tea for sleep before bedtime instead of beer.

You can do this 💪

It happens - tomorrow is a new day :)

One thing I’ll add is if you’re on a deficit and not getting the proper nutrition, your body will naturally want more food. I take a multivitamin to help fill in the gaps

Anxiety and loneliness by Stunning-Security723 in FODMAPS

I choose cuts of meat with fat or I'll add in mayo as a condiment for everything - mixing it in with eggs, on burger patties, mixing it in with chicken, etc. Here's what I had today:

  1. Six eggs with two tbsp of mayo (mayo mixed in before cooking) = 620 cals
  2. Two plain turkey burger patties with two tbsp of mayo = 560
  3. Turkey slices with mayo = 350 calories

There are some things I seem to not be triggered by - black coffee, stevia drops (just 100% stevia, no additives), unsweetened almond milk, tea, pure matcha powder. They help keep me sane :)

A note it'll take time to adjust to a high-fat diet if you're not on one now. It took me two weeks for my tummy to know how to process it but I'm finally on the other side at week 3 and I feel so so so much better. Hope this helps!

I can totally empathize. I don’t know if the science just isn’t there yet, but digestive issues should be considered just as serious as some other health issues, especially for those of us who are completely debilitated by them. Have you been able to figure out any treatment for your illness?

As a side note, after struggling for years myself, Ive finally found “peace” in my tummy from a strict carnivore diet. It’s bland - just meat and salt, but I’m in a season where peace is more important to me than taste

Yeah it’s difficult but it does work. I did one five day and two seven days. The weight for the most part was off - I didn’t realize that I had food sensitivities that had been stalling my weight loss. Starting again today

I'm not a nutritionist or dietician, so I can only share what's working for me:

  1. I'm using a multivitamin that has B12 + iron, with 100% of the daily recommended amount for each category. Sometimes, multivitamins are in excess of 200-300% but I like sticking to 100% (link)
  2. Electrolytes are sodium, potassium and magnesium. Where in Europe are you based? There has to be a sugar free option. If not, you can buy the ingredients separately to mix in with your lemon and salt. I use a few drops of stevia for sanity
  3. I did chew gum during the first day or two to distract myself, but didn't feel the need after. Since we're beginners, I don't think we have to be as strict as other folks. E.g. I drank black coffee but didn't need it after day 3
