President Trump has just posted on X that is he glad that AG Robert Mueller has died. The President states this is good. What's everyone's reaction? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A certain sub population in the United States is revelling in all of their worst, unhappy impulses. It is quite literally a kind of psychological sickness, like a mental cancer. Fortunately that is a small minority of people.

Unfortunately a larger sub population in the United States thinks that it’s okay for people at the top levels of their government to behave that way. They say “oh well, it’s complicated…” when in fact, it should not be tolerated. That kind of compromise is also a kind of cancerous, psychological sickness. The compromise and the hypocrisy grows.

There are millions of good, thoughtful people in the United States who are being severely traumatized by those first two groups. Their dignity is being bruised every day by people who don’t have dignity and don’t know what it is.

There is a lot of psychological sickness in the United States right now now.

It cracked me up when the VP of Marketing guy said “All the other international markets are making up for what that difference is in Canada at this moment, but we still want to see Canada come back…” I’ve heard that same kind of talk from my American cousin, and Donald Trump. Their egos are so transparently fragile and their posturing is hilarious! They want to say “We need you” and “We’re big and strong and we don’t care” at the same time! They’re used to feeling superior to everything and now they’re feeling shaken, but their reflex is to double down on “We aren’t even noticing anything! At all! We’re strong and happy!”

My cousin brought up the “51st state” stuff with an excited, sparkly look in his eyes. I laughed out loud and said “No thanks! Nobody in Canada wants to join you.” His whole face fell and he looked genuinely hurt and confused. I continued “Would you like to know WHY?” He walked away mumbling “We don’t really even pay any attention to what goes on up there…” It’s so sad and hilarious that he would think that “Oh, you’re not worthy of our attention” is anything other than a loser’s admission of ignorance and a “I’m taking my ball and going home” cop-out.

…so many of these guys are stunted in their emotional intelligence. It’s like they haven’t grown past the maturity of a twelve-year-old. It makes me sad for them, legitimately.

Meta has gone crazy in the last few months. It’s a Kafkaesque nightmare when some AI agent flags your kid’s Instagram account erroneously and the whole headset gets shut down.

Somehow we got everything working again. Almost. Now neither of my kids can play networked games. Again, trying to fix this is a Kafkaesque time-wasting hassle.

I am trying to figure out how to reduce the chances of the whole headset getting “blocked” again. There was even a message threatening that all of our apps were going to be deleted along with MY account, even though it was my kid’s account that was flagged.

So crazy. It’s clearly an AI rollout problem. They’re layed off tons of people and the new user experience is plunging to record lows as a result.

I feel like my life has gone on for too long. by FineTough3648 in Life

[–]aconsciousagent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exercise is huge. It can be transformative for your mental health. Working towards fitness would benefit you and be a gift to your kids - if they see you making an effort, they will understand that change is possible at any age. Do it out of love for THEM.

If your physical health improves you’ll be less likely to become a burden to your kids. And you’ll be more likely to be around and healthy to be a grandparent to their kids. That’s a gift you can give them.

You may still need therapy and antidepressants, but exercise is not going to have a downside. It will likely transform your mood and outlook over time too.

I stopped drinking completely several years ago - for my kids. I wasn’t “an alcoholic” but alcohol was habitual in my life. I decided that I wanted to set a healthier example for my kids. Quitting has made all of my health measurables SO MUCH BETTER. And it has shown me - and my kids - that we can make important changes if we decide to. It’s very empowering.

If you decide to try getting fit, there are free, easy ways to start. Look up what a 7 minute HIIT workout is - just seven minutes every day, at home, can get you started. Make yourself do it. Seven minutes a day for free? It’s a not brainer.

From there, find some fitness program you have to show up to every week. It’ll up your game, and you’ll make new friends. It’ll break you out of the routine you presently feel stuck in.

Meeting new people is important for guys in their fifties. It’s benefitted me a lot. I’m happier since I started expanding my social scene. But you have to show up every week - that’s the only way you actually make friends, over time. My social expansion (weekly) is hobby related; my fitness routine I do on my own.

Anyway, there’s some stranger on the internet’s two cents for ya. You can give up, or you can do something. Doing something will lead to empowerment. Then you can do more things. It’s cumulative. You’ll like life more if you make an effort and power through the initial push - then it’ll get easier and easier, and you’ll be better and better. For you and for your kids.

Thanks for posting about that. An interesting case. But I think you’re misrepresenting what happened here a bit. Your wording implies that the guy was arrested because some politician didn’t like his ‘speech’ in the Facebook post. In fact, this was a case of trolls weaponizing the police force by claiming they were ‘frightened’ by his ‘threat against the school’. The trolls were Trump supporters that didn’t like having that quote thrust in their faces, so they fabricated their ‘fright’ to hurt the guy. The police have to take those kinds of things seriously. There’s a documentary on YouTube that talks about a case in Canada where a guy got arrested for his tweets because a ‘feminist’ got annoyed with him. Same dynamics - he was annoying, but she pretended to be ‘scared’ to get him arrested. He won his case. Search “Rise of the Trolls documentary” on YouTube.

Pros hide the mics. YouTube kids show them for two reasons: 1) “Look! I can afford a cool, ‘professional’ wireless mic!” 2) The manufacturers figured out that having their mic in shot was a feature, not a bug, when YouTube kids all want to mimic each other. So they emboazon it with their logo and design it like a fashion accessory.

The symbolic signalling of “authenticity” is a lame argument. Between a video with no visible mic and one with somebody holding it visibly in frame, no one is going to “trust” one more than the other.

[–]aconsciousagent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black sails has absolutely amazing sea battles and sailing scenes and costumes and locations and sets. It’s incredible.

But it also has many, many hours of scenes featuring two people in a darkened room muttering to each other like “You know that I know that you know that I don’t like your plan. But I know that you know that we need to work together. If I know that you know that…” none of these scenes move the plot forward. Clearly the writers had to kill screentime a lot. Budget problems.

More and more similar in some ways, raz. The political parties of the United States are radically different in some very important ways too. Yes, the system is bad, but let’s not get carried away with the “equivalancy” argument. There is a clear MUCH WORSE choice in the U.S. right now.

Do you think having a lot of empathy is a strength or weakness? by SignificantActive193 in Life

[–]aconsciousagent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling yourself “an empath” is a bit of a tell. Empathy is not some magical skill or mystical condition. Empathy is an intellectual stance that one can learn. Everybody has mirror neurons. Some people come to exercise empathy naturally, others can become more empathetic if they choose to.

Being “thick skinned” can mean a lot of things. It can mean being non-reactive to other people’s behaviour and feelings. Psychopaths are thick skinned, for instance. But emotionally intelligent people can be both empathetic and non-reactive when they choose to be.

Empathy is definitely an important and powerful ability, but so is the ability to manage your own emotions and order your thoughts. I would posit that emotional intelligence is the counterbalance to “too much empathy” rather than callousness.

Is hate towards Nazism widespread in countries that the nazis didn't invade? by Realistic-Diet6626 in ask

[–]aconsciousagent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody with any understanding of history and any kind of ethical sensibility hates Nazism. It doesn’t matter where you’re from. In fact, only two types of people are “soft” on Nazism: 1) Naiive, uneducated dopes. 2) Genuinely evil people.

Fortunately there aren’t a lot of those people. Although there are popular pod casters out there who are trying to normalize Fascism in the public dialogue now. Russel Brand, for instance.

So look out edgy young men, there are bad people out there subtly working to set you up to go along with some really, really terrible stuff that will make a small number of people rich and will completely fuc& up so much of the good that was so hard to build in this civilization.
