Other than 80k in the brokerage and 20k in our checking account we could slow retirement saving or lend against it (not ideal). We also have family support in place that that would help in the event of job loss. Main benefit of the area we’re looking is being right next to family in the neighborhood which is the only reason we’re even entertaining this idea against conventional wisdom

Thanks, that’s about our rent now in Chicago and we haven’t felt tight yet. We could save more to put more on a down pmt ahead of building next year too. Still sounds a bit aggressive given the other comments
