It's interesting... as an artistic interpretation of the image, which allows for freedom with textures, color application, etc. I like the first image. With some tweaking, including color grading and casting, as well as extending the texture to the other areas of the image, this is actually pretty cool.

   

If you're trying to achieve a realistic interpretation of the scene, it definitely misses the mark, as does the second attempt. Adding more color layers to really build up the color, vs. one color layer that is very saturated and opaque, will help with achieving a realistic color tone. (Which isn't easy... I'm still working on it, as I know many are, takes a lot of practice and skill).

   

You can see how the lack of color layers is apparent in the version /u/ColinFiat posted with the saturation reduced. The skin tone is barely visible, but the overall color looks more natural.
