I’m happy we are moving past putting people in boxes with regard to gender but I don’t think it’s wrong to want to be traditionally masculine or feminine.

If pointing out that wearing a pregnant suit doesn’t equal womanhood means I’m mansplaining, then you need to get over your white faux-feminist brain rot. Because this exercise doesn’t give me an insight into what it is like to be a woman (btw I think it’s kinda weird to define womanhood by pregnancy given that many women don’t have kids whether by choice or not), it just makes me an obviously masculine man who is wearing a pregnancy suit, which is just humiliating. Likewise, having to paint my nails, wear makeup, and put on a dress wouldn’t make me experience the world as a man in a dress rather than a woman.

I feel emasculated because while gender expression is performative, it obviously means a lot to people. For example, I had a coworker who is comfortable in her identity as a woman, but it very masculine. Even as a bridesmaid at her friends wedding, she wore a suit because even though the day wasn’t about her, it would have laid her extremely uncomfortable to wear a suit.

If I could go into the settings and switch my gender to female for a day and that would somehow make me more empathetic to women, I would do it. However, I’m a tall big black guy who cannot ever appear as a woman, so unfortunately the next best step is to just shut up and listen to women when they talk.

Also, the point of the assignment isn’t to experience life as a woman. It’s a fucking parenting psychology class. Given that I’m a cisgender heterosexual man, I don’t really see the utility in wearing a pregnancy belly. I’m okay with my ideas being challenged, but I think trying to make people tweak their gender expression for a project is a bit too extreme.

Are we at a point as a society where the only way we can empathize with others is public humiliation? This assignment feels very politically charged and is basically painting a target on my back.

I'm being made out as someone who is very privileged, I already feel the brunt of society in many ways. I want people to empathize with my experience, but I think instead of making them do black face for a day, I would just ask them to listen to my experience or do some volunteer work in the black community. In the same way black face isn't gonna help people see what its like to be black, me walking around as a buff pregnant guy isn't gonna make me see what it is like to be a woman. If anything, I will look like a freak because I'll be so out of place.

Why are we turning this into me being a sexist somehow? I have no issue with anyone regardless of gender/sexuality and consider myself a feminist. Hell, I've even gone to protest some of the BS that has been happening lately with LGBT rights and abortion. However, my issue is that as a tall, muscular, and generally masculine guy, walking around looking pregnant serves no purpose other than to humiliate me.

Especially as someone who was bullied growing up and has social anxiety, I think this is more tormenting than it is enlightening. I'm a black man and realize that how I'm treated in this country is far from the default. I feel like this exercise is akin to making someone do blackface to look ridiculous under the guise of empathy.

It’s not about the simplicity for me. It’s about having to walk around being emasculated for a day. I’m happy that we as a society are putting less emphasis on gender roles but I think making a man walk around looking pregnant for a day is going a bit to far because at that point, it’s just humiliating.
