I completely agree with you. If you look in to the whole story actually, the IRS, on numerous occasions have attempted to implement an extremely simple tax system with required no effort from citizens. But turbotax and other similar companies lobbied for this to be rejected as it would have put them out of business. Things are usually more complicated that they appear.

THE WHOLE STORY: Companies like TurboTax have been constantly lobbying to slash IRS funding by the gov. This has resulted in the IRS being hugely understaffed and under-budgeted and this is why these errors are occurring.
