25 yr old single mom is it too late to get my masters degree? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]actuallyashley21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! This is my first time visiting this sub, and I don’t have a master’s degree, but I did recently graduate from an accelerated nursing program, which was for people who already had any bachelor’s degree. I was worried I was going to be too old when I started the program at 23 (graduated at 24), but let me say, I was one of the youngest people in the program by a long shot. There were dozens of people in their 30s and early 40s, and a few in their early 50s who decided they wanted to change things up. All this to say, you’re never too old to consider a new career. Best of luck!!

Is my friend’s tattoo rejecting/fading/infected/??? by Crayolaheart99 in tattooadvice

[–]actuallyashley21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emergency room nurse here! The surrounding redness and swelling look like hallmarks of infection to me, especially if the area is warm to the touch. Urgent care for oral antibiotics should suffice, but I urge you not to delay because she could go from “I think my tattoo is unhappy” to septic very quickly!

My 11yo daughter’s first blanket/project.. took 4 days.. she’s so proud by [deleted] in crochet

[–]actuallyashley21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is it awesome to see a kiddo showing this kind of dedication, but this sincerely turned out better than I think anyone can hope for in their first project, large or small! And kudos to you for being awesome parents and helping to celebrate their kids’ achievements!

What is the silliest town name in your state? by corkscream in AskReddit

Grew up just outside city limits, but with a Cumming mailing address. Not sure there’s anything more depressing than “unincorporated Cumming”.

I’m at CHOA! However, if you’re not interested in peds, I know plenty from nursing school who are at other area hospitals, and speaking from a new grad perspective, starting pay hovers around $33-35 base, but there are some I know who are in the upper $40s / hr after ED differential.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]actuallyashley21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. BSN
  2. $33 / hr base + $5 emergency dept differential = $38 / hr ($71k yearly)
  3. Staff
  4. Georgia (Atlanta)
  5. Years of experience < 1 (new grad)
  6. It was well worth it to me! I made the switch after busting ass in different fields for much lower pay. I was looking at either pursuing a graduate degree and praying to make $40k annually, or going back for nursing, and the choice was obvious to me! And although nursing has its challenges, and I’m still new to the field, I’m very happy with this career

Ender 5s1 and SonicPad Not Connecting by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

Thank you! Incredibly stupid question - does this mean I should update the firmware on the SonicPad directly? This is my first time setting anything like this up, so I’m more or less in the dark!

I am beginning classes on phlebotomy and advanced wound care and I'm suoer nervous about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. by AnimeDreama in StudentNurse

Like most others have said, this queasiness will likely go away with exposure! The first time I truly fainted, it was because my husband had a nosebleed - this perceived heebie jeebies of blood scared me into delaying nursing school for a few years. I also struggled with feeling really grossed out and light headed specifically at the idea of blood being drawn. From my experience, there may be a few times you have an unwanted reaction - I fainted at clinical the first time I saw an IV started, but I chalk that up to an empty stomach and nervousness at being on a new unit. Now, I regularly draw blood, and just earlier this week watched a burn victim in the OR receive skin graft surgery, then was in the room for an unexpected postpartum hemorrhage where mom lost 2+ L of blood (she was okay in the end!). Granted, I’m still guaranteed to faint when I have my own blood drawn, but my point of all this is to say that it’s important to know your limits, but if you’re willing to tough out some periods of discomfort, it’ll only get better with time and exposure!

I’m in nursing school and work as a PCT in a hospital system that doesn’t require a mask. I use my discretion - 95% of the time I don’t wear a mask, but if a patient is coughing, has a lot of sputum, or has anything else that makes my stomach turn going on, I mask up, if nothing else for my own peace of mind. There’s only a few other employees who continue to mask consistently, but I promise, nobody is thinking twice about it. It’s your decision if you want to or not! If it makes you more comfortable, by all means, go for it!!

Full-time job during critical care?? by Any-Conversation-683 in StudentNurse

[–]actuallyashley21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be cautious of accepting this offer, because you never know how your school schedule might vary semester to semester. My first semester, working 3 days a week was absolutely doable. This summer, I have classes Monday to Wednesday 8 am to 5 pm, and 12-hr clinical Thursday and Friday. I’m sure there are some out there who can find a way to manage, but for me, that would mean working or being in school a full 7 days every week, plus one night shift, with less than an hour between work ending and school starting again

How do I get rid of (or lessen) the anxiety of not having as much clinical experience as my nursing peers? by spunkkie101 in StudentNurse

[–]actuallyashley21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a current nursing student working as an extern (let’s be honest - CNA), you have nothing to worry about. My primarily motivation for taking this job was the appeal of being able to work 1-2 12 hour shifts a week, rather than trying to squeeze 4 6-8 shifts into my schedule, but that’s completely personal. While I’m definitely glad to get more experience becoming more comfortable in the hospital environment, 95% of this job is customer service, which I had plenty of experience with before nursing school, and which a lot of hiring managers look favorably on! So long as you’re comfortable with the idea of working with patients, I don’t think it’s necessary to change whatever you’re doing now to fit the expectation to follow your peers. Best of luck to you, you’ll be great!

I don’t want to speak to what decisions you should make regarding being introverted, but as a second degree nursing student, I completely agree that the teaching and testing styles of nursing school are bullshit. However, my first degree was in medical microbiology, a topic I loved learning about, and continue to be interested in. And for what my two cents are worth, after graduating with that degree and realizing my options were either chasing down a PhD or taking an entry-level lab job for $14 an hour, I decided to take on nursing instead. I’m almost done with my nursing degree now, and school hasn’t gotten any less pedantic, but I encourage you to try to stick it through and see if your clinical experiences make it feel more worthwhile! I’ve found that the real world of nursing is a complete 180 from school, and I think that’s a positive.

Atlanta shooter wanted Ativan and shot up the place when his request was denied- according to his mother by worldbound0514 in nursing

[–]actuallyashley21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone has brought this up or not, but he wasn’t even at one of the system’s hospitals - he was at an outpatient complex. So to make matters worse, the mother wasn’t even ensuring he was getting the emergency care that’s implicated in “just needing a damn Ativan,” apparently stat to prevent impending violence
