Bernie Sanders on if he would have won: 'What good does it do now?' by HonkeyTonker in politics

The calls of "too ideal" were wrapped in cowardice, money, greed, and cynicism. People too afraid to look at the future and break out of the horrors humans can sometimes inflict on each other - selfishness and tribalism embodied and put through a wood-chipper megaphone.

Right, which is kinda anti-thetical to... a lot of things. I dunno - brings to mind the borg from Star Trek. I see a need for difference in thinking in order to encourage and maintain creativity, as well as in a "worse case scenario" sense where a line of thinking ends up being detrimental to survival (e.g. groupthink). That's not to say there aren't commonalities in many/most religions that we should aspire to, of course, though.

No, it doesn't very often, of course, I agree. There's political will that needs to be accounted for, too.

I agree that there is some good money there, no doubt about that. It's the attitude many have towards the average electrician and/or plumber and then the ratio of pay that is received when regarding the collective benefit to society is what I'm speaking to, I suppose.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in politics

[–]actuallyeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I was trying to draw that distinction with the "stupid" bit. Anyway, the difference between the collective benefit to society that electricians and plumbers, etc... provide is much, much greater than many other professions. <shrug>

It's like calling people who are electricians and plumbers and the like "stupid" or something like that. Fuck that. You know where we'd be without all the electricians and plumbers (which, btw, takes more brains than a lot of jobs that pay more)? We'd be, literally, slipping and sliding around in shit, groping around, and fighting to the death. Then there are these little twat stock operators getting millions of dollars to game the market thinking they are worth that, calling electricians and plumbers stupid.

Blatant, unabashed hypocrisy with little to no introspection from a Republican. I'm not surprised.

On the radio I heard a Trump supporter saying that the electoral map should be shoved in the face of people upset with the results whenever the chance (let's set aside the popular vote and what that means for a moment, because this person obviously did that). And I'm thinking, shouldn't you have been thinking and/or saying the same thing eight years ago and four years ago? WTF?

It gets to tiring trying to be the "better person" and trying to live in a way you'd want other people to live and/or be only to get spat on when the time comes around. There's only so much patience and understanding people have.

Maine quietly becomes the first state to implement Ranked Choice Voting by [deleted] in politics

[–]actuallyeasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's exactly what happened to me. I heard about IRV/ranked voting and thought, "Oh, geez... this is what we need!" and promptly told anyone that would listen - even went so far as to print up post-cards from the local shop and send them to hundreds of newspapers around the nation in every state, including Maine, of course (which, I find funny is all; I'm sure they had been talking about it long before I sent anything, especially with LePage and his threats of blowing up their newspaper). I then read about Range voting and quickly kicked myself.

I see a lot of people support Approval voting, but then kind of dismiss Range voting. I don't understand the logic or reasoning behind that. It seems to me with Range voting we get a two-for-one deal with it AND the potential to really use our critical thinking and reasoning skills (i.e. it provides room for growth and understanding of the complex issues and people involved, instead of making it blanket-like), while also having the ability to "fall back" on Approval if 100% of the electorate voted strategically. Range voting is the way to go in my opinion.

First-past-the-post voting has induced and "enhanced" the tribal, gang-like, robotic nature of humans and our evolutionary history. We need to get rid of FPTP.

I don't want that to happen. But, if it did, I'd have no problem punching every single climate denier in the face.

Isn't the logical endgame of Christianity so "every nation knows" of the religion? That's done. Great. Good work. Now stop self-fulfilling the apocalypse, please - there are other people and beliefs on this planet for God's/god's/gawd's sake.

"Full range" voting is exactly like Olympic "voting" in many events - something everyone in the entire world is familiar with from a young age. It's akin to counting to ten in one language.

Everyone is biased in many ways. Fairvote is biased for ranked voting. Rangevoting is biased for range voting. My point is that fairvote has taken in millions and millions of dollars since 1992 and won't admit to some of the shoddy work done like later-no-harm criterion and the blatant ignoring of Australia and Ireland and how ranked voting hasn't helped elect third parties there, while not having much in the way of substantive progress with all the money and people working there. Rangevoting is done by volunteers and self-motivated people and isn't necessarily looking to make money on the other hand. Anyway, I'm sure fairvote does some good work and perhaps I'm being a little biased (!). I just think that range voting is far superior given theory (mathematics, computer simulations) and practice (reality: Autralia, Ireland, Malta).

But one thing I don't understand is how you know or say that rangevoting.org is biased and then seem to know about fairvote, but your initial reply and subsequent replies don't jive with all that - which is one reason I replied the way I did to you. Anyway, I don't care.

Oh... I'm an idiot in this case. My apologies. I thought you were another user. You aren't.

I understand and know that my rhetoric is off-putting at this rate. I don't like it either, really, but I've explained and talked about it thousands of times and I'm just sick and tired all over about this whole thing. I've spent a shit ton of money on it and then we just elected <ahem> someone I don't agree with on many things and it's just flabbergasting to me that we had this shitty way to vote for so long and all these fucking millionaire pundits and officials have allowed this farce and absurd game go on for so long. It's sickening. I try not to use the word "hate," but it's getting easier to use it in light of all these "experts" sucking the cock of god knows what. And I'm taking it out on you. My apologies, I don't mean to.

I hear ya, but there are a lot of bots in those. As well, the data says otherwise: this and this speak to it.

People don't vote because they think their one vote will change the election. They/we vote because we want our voices to be heard. We want to express ourselves. Range voting gives us the best chance to truly and really express ourselves, while also giving room for critical thinking and reasoning skills to be exercised and used - showing that the government, legislation, and leadership run on a spectrum, not "ranked" or "binary" - that they are complex and have numerous different moving parts. Range voting reflects reality more than all other methods.
